I haven't read the new one yet (mostly just lurk in this thread and the pregnancy one since we're going to start trying later this year), but Expecting Better was pretty good and having the data helped with some of the anxieties that were getting through my current baby crazed state of mind. If you want to try before you buy, Slate last week was posting articles adapted from the book.

Edit: Here's a link to her author page on Slate with the articles.

What time does your partner get home on a normal day? Are they always home after the kid goes to bed or is it only on the nights they go out? Could you go out when they get home? Or could your kid stay later at daycare one day a week so your partner can do pickup, or is it not open/cost prohibitive?

Yeah, Cribsheets had a good section on it, including a chart on the relative increases in SIDS risk for various factors (ranging from cosleeping with a sober nonsmoker and a baby who's EBF being the smallest increase in risk up to a drunk smoker on drugs and exclusive formula feeding being the highest increase). The teacher of the parenting workshop that we did with our childbirth class noted the same things, while pointing out that while you don't want a pillow or blankets near the baby, if it's a newborn who isn't mobile then a single pillow under your head or a blanket over your feet aren't "near" the baby who is presumably in tit range.

I have no personal experience on this yet but we did get one of the arms reach bedside cosleepers for our room for those first few months.

Our one week old likes to pee while we're changing a dirty diaper, especially after we've put down a new clean one. Earlier this morning, my husband was changing her, and she literally turned and peed on the changing table avoiding the new clean diaper entirely. If she was a boy I shudder to think about what pee hijinks she'd get up to.

We went three times last week--first visit for the newborn then two jaundice follow ups. We also have her two week scheduled for tomorrow, and when my husband called to schedule the second jaundice follow up for last Thursday, the receptionist was so confused. She kept asking if he wanted to cancel tomorrow's appointment and didn't understand why we needed to come back when we were just in the day before (and the day before that).

As far as tracking goes, I asked about apps in here (or maybe in the pregnancy thread?) before our daughter was born four weeks ago, but we actually just ended up using a Google spreadsheet to track feeds and wet/dirty diapers. It's been working well enough so far. Might switch to an app when she's old enough to start sleep training, we'll see.

Our 7.5 week old is a little puke and spit up machine. She also hasn't been growing as much as we'd like (gone from 64th percentile at birth to 7th now) so we're having fun with adding extra formula to bottles of pumped milk (or formula when we run out of milk) to try and get more calories in her. I'm also cutting out dairy to see if that helps her, so we're using a soy formula and that stuff is so gross. She seems to like it ok though.

One of my favorite things the first two week was having to console my wife, full of post-pregnancy hormones, as she wept and said she was an unfit mother because she wasn't producing enough to exclusively breastfeed. Treasured memories indeed.

Mmm, gotta love that postpartum breastfeeding sparked meltdown. I think I had two? At least two anyway.

Aside from the immunity benefits and bonding from breastfeeding (although when she's screaming because she's decided she doesn't want to stay latched who knows how much bonding is happening), there is something to be said for the convenience of just being able to pop out a boob most of the time. However, it's only convenient if I'm with her, which I only am most of the time right now since I'm on leave. I'm the one who does most of our errands though, since I like it (and getting out of the house) more, so my husband has to be able to feed her. She's also not getting enough calories just from breast milk or even normal formula feeds (thanks, reflux) so we're having to add a bit of (extra) formula to fortify her bottle feeds.

Can the doctor order another test? Might be easier than trying to find one at a drugstore or w/e. My husband has a cold that our last home test was negative on, and since the baby and I both started showing symptoms yesterday I wanted to get myself tested just to be safe. All the local drugstores were booked up but my GP was able to put in the order after a MyChart message and I could use the hospital's drive through testing site.

Thankfully, my test also came back negative, so we don't think we need to worry about our 3.5 month old having covid. Frankly she's the least fussy of the three of us with this cold. The gas she's had lately is far more concerning to her.

Also her little baby coughs are so pathetic.

Our for four month old has a lip tie. Her ped said that they usually don't affect the feeding when it's just the lip tie with no tongue tie, so she didn't snip it since the baby's issues were staying awake and keeping food down (the latter is still an issue but she's up to 12.5 lbs :toot:). The dr said they'll snip it if it causes speech issues once that's a concern but obviously she's too young to worry about that right now.

Also she had her first day of daycare today. They offered a half day trial to meet the teachers and introduce her to the concept of daycare. It seems to have gone well, so she starts for real on Tuesday.

I don't have any statistics about how common it still is in America so hopefully he doesn't have a horribly outdated dick by the time any wants to see it.

He can just say it's retro.

Pretty sure our four month old has a combo of elevated temp from teething (we think she's teething anyway) and an unrelated cold, but she's been popping above 100.4 just often enough that she gets to go to the doctor tomorrow.

No real advice on the sleep thing--our almost five month old is still sleeping in our room, like 90% cosleeping and 10% in her bedside bassinet. Honestly the cosleeping is more for me than for her, since we're breastfeeding at night it's just way easier for me to just put my boob in her mouth when she gets hungry at night. If she falls asleep during the day while playing on her little floor mat gym thing she'll usually take a crib transfer okish; if she falls asleep in my arms it's usually a no go. I'd say she apparently naps fine at daycare, but two of the 2.5 days she's been there over the past three weeks she turned out to be sick so who knows. Planning to start transitioning her out of our room at sixish months so we'll see how that goes.

Poor thing has her first ear infection though. She's had a cold for the past few weeks that we know now is an adenovirus, and what was a mild ear infection the ped thought was probably just viral has changed into (or had added to it) a bacterial one from all the congestion. The smell of the fake bubble gum flavoring in the amoxicillin gave my husband & me both flashbacks.

Don't underestimate the value of unstructured floor time with some toys. Something dangly and jangly is always a winner with our 6 month old. It's still tiring to watch her all day for sure, but it gives me time where she's basically entertaining herself and I'm just there.

I've done one public diaper change with our six month old, when she was like two months old. We were at a museum with my mom and I went to do the diaper change in the bathroom while mom was still in an exhibit. Mom found us from baby's crying.

On a different note, what sort of swimsuit do you recommend for a baby? Rash guard + bottom to cover the swim diaper or a single piece? It seems to me that the best option is a zip up one piece suit, so we're not potentially trying to pull a wet rash guard over her head, but interested to hear the thoughts of folks who have dealt with this before.

Oh, long sleeve for sure. There was a cute suit at Target earlier that was basically a long sleeved, shorts-length zip up romper style. Like I said, it just seemed like potentially trying to pull a wet, separate rash guard over her head would be a pain. Although most of the annoyance would probably be in the sleeves I guess, which are unavoidable.

And yeah, she hasn't really been out much. We don't go to restaurants because covid. She does daycare and we were at my BIL's for Thanksgiving, but those don't count, and we go for walks but we're never out long enough for her to need a change. Maybe now that it's getting nicer and she's more interested in things, especially if the vaccine gets approved, we'll get out with her and have to change her in public more.

Speaking of Jurassic Park, our daughter has always spit up like a dilophosaurus (as depicted in the movie, anyway), and part of me was worried I wouldn't be able to tell if she was actually vomiting unless it was full on projectile across the room vomit.

After this morning, I guess I don't have that worry anymore. On the plus side, no fever, she's not acting sick, and daycare has a "no more than two vomits in a 24 hour period" unless they're otherwise acutely sick.

I can't decide if watching my baby's reaction as she pets the cat for the first time while I try to nurse her back to sleep is worth having her be wide awake at 3am after waking up to change out her diaper, onesie, sleep sack, and crib sheet because gravity and stomach sleeping are stronger forces than the absorbency of her diaper.

At least the cat tolerated her efforts in the process of achieving his goal of cuddles from me.
