Kiwi Bigtree posted:I love how the Republican response to their profound asswhooping by every growing minority demographic in the US is to call those demographics stupid, greedy children. I want to feel that way but one thing I've learned is Americans have short memories and are easily led by media narratives. I hope that people don't forget how the rightwing media is openly demonizing Obama voters right now but I don't have a lot of faith we will remember in four years time.

Walter posted:But is Rush really all that charismatic, when you get right down to it? How many people is he winning over with his rhetoric? It's entirely possible it's just the area I live in (northwest Louisiana) but Rush is practically sacred around here. My circle is fairly liberal but their families are anything but. During the Sandra Fluke debacle my old roommate's mother for example did the most amazing gymnastics I've ever seen to defend Rush and deflect criticism onto anyone and everything else. She wasn't the only one of course, but she really stood out because otherwise she's really sweet and caring. It blew my mind she could feel the way she did about such an awful man. Rush is very charismatic when speaking to the right crowd; that's why he and his influence is so scary. EDIT: On a similar topic, I still have trouble convincing people that Fox News isn't "just another news channel". I work in IT and it seems that industry attracts a lot of just-worlders and libertarians. A good buddy of mine just plainly will not believe stuff like Jane Akre's case actually happened, regardless of what he's shown. He really believes it's just a new channel reporting news. You can't really reason with people like that. FNC and the conservative media complex know what they are doing and how to appeal to people like my buddy. Obama is physically incapable of picking up a shotgun, readying, aiming, and firing it at a disk made of clay being flung into the air. Just can't do it! I half wonder what it feels like to have such a need to have that "special knowledge" that everything is a conspiracy and nothing is what it seems. I'm glad I don't, of course, but it must be exhausting to read nefarious doings into every mundane thing in life.

They've really built themselves into an emotional frenzy over Obama. Rhetoric is realty and they are so upset about so many things, their view of him doesn't really make any sense anymore. He's just everything evil and bad about the world rolled into one man. The simplicity of their reasoning is really frightening. I've lost a few friends over it myself; friends that, up until recently were pretty laid back and cool people. Now I can't talk to them anymore thanks to the implicit threats of violence because I don't agree with them. If I were more like them I suppose I'd think something is in the water.

Not Right Wing media exactly but this made me do a double take. My wife and I were driving the other day and she decided it was time to cancel our OnStar account. So she hits the button, goes through their spiel and gets to the point where she is asked why we are cancelling. She mentions it's just a cost we don't feel like paying and the guy says out of nowhere "Are you cancelling because of Obamacare?". I had been silent through the call but I did a double take and just started laughing. The guy seemed offended and said "Well, we've just been getting a LOT of calls about that." and rushed us through the process. It was strange - I didn't know if he was sharing his political views and lost the gamble or if he really was getting lots of "Obamacare cancellations". I was a little rankled that he called it Obamacare but he might have just done it because that's what the media calls it, and thus his customers. It felt like we were on the cusp of having a Right Wing argument with a call center guy though. Just a really weird conversation overall.

Credibility does not matter to them and it's maddening. This was my reaction on reading about that. I can't believe how unrelentingly out of touch people with that attitude are. My grandparents could pay their way through college flipping burgers. I couldn't buy books for half a semester on a burger-flipper's salary.

THE GAYEST APPAREL posted:I talked to a guy who totally agreed wages should go up but not to $15 because then people who didn't go to college would be making the same as him. That was his entire justification. I think on the whole that'a valid point, but maybe not the way that guy meant it. Wages should be sliding up across the board but they aren't and have been stagnant for a long time. Given the cost of college these days I absolutely am on board with grads also making more money. EDIT: I don't mean his statement that minimum wage shouldn't slide up that much was a valid point, but that he should have been making more money as well, just to be clear.

Which isn't exactly wrong but it's a hell of a time for them to look at real unemployment.

It's totally cool to call that guy a total dumbass for his politcal beliefs directly contributing to his condition but I'd rather use it as a reason we need UHC rather than wish for his pain and eventual death.
