The cell phone thing probably wouldn't be as bad if every appearance of PPP wasn't "My sweet, sexy boys!". Like, he wouldn't be that bad of a characters if he weren't referring to his prison harem constantly.

e: I like PPP, for the record, but I find his primary bit to be exhausting.

Metal Bat being near the bottom of the S Class is a goddamn travesty. He's ranked below Genos, for gently caress's sake.

He's been overvalued. At most he should be A rank. Maybe somewhere in the 30s. Genos' problem is that he keeps getting sent to handle problems out of his league because he looks cool.

Has Genos ever actually been sent out for one of the problems, though? I think he's only ever been summoned when it was the entire S Class that was called in, everything else was just being near Saitama.

I never thought about the parallel with All Might, but it's also interesting that they both understand their role as heroes. All Might showing his stronger self to inspire heroes to continue being heroes, and Saitama show his weak self to keep the public's opinion of heroes positive.

Also, please remember, One Punch Man is only the name of the manga. Saitama's hero name is Caped Baldy, which he is still upholding very well.

The "Saitama's power comes from something more than a regular workout routine" theory is so well trodden now, even just in this thread, that it's almost refreshing to see it again.

Here's a question for the idea of Saitama's powers being more than he claims: Would it still be funny? If not, it's probably wrong.

Impressions matter. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if there are people who've never heard of the original version and think this whole series is 100% serious. (these are also the same people who think Dragonaball Z is 100% serious)

I've never really thought DBZ was entirely serious, but I'm watching through the original DB for the first time in a while, and I forgot just how much of a gag show it was. It's almost stupid.

But yeah, despite Murata's art, it's usually pretty easy to tell that this is a comedy manga, even if it wasn't sold to me that way when I was first told about it by a friend.

One Punch is undeniably a comedy but that doesn't mean there can't also be some level of intrigue and compelling drama going on.

The characters with intrigue and "compelling drama" are the characters that also get flatly ignored or otherwise completely dunked on by Saitama. His powers coming from anything more than him wanting it and working for it make him pretty much exactly the same as every hero but King, who is a separate joke entirely.

Show me a flattering picture of Karl Pilkington, or an unflattering picture of The Rock.

e: I'm actually going to say that Vin Diesel, as pictured above, could probably pull this off decently well by himself, but it wouldn't be as funny has having 2 separate actors. Having The Rock in a movie for less than, like, 5 minutes for a single, drawn-out punch sounds pretty funny to me.

I don't think The Rock could look goofy enough to play One Saitama, and I don't think all of the lighting and costuming in the world could make Karl look like Murata Saitama. Schwarzwald's 1 man 2 costume idea would need someone who could do both, and I do actually think Vin Diesel could pull it off with lighting and costume tricks. He's not quite The Rock buff, but he's pretty built, and putting him in a slightly baggy costume (like Schwarzwald's Adam West example) could work pretty well.

All of that being said, I hope they never even think about doing a US live action adaptation of OPM, because they will almost certainly get it incredibly wrong.

Oh, I know, I was making a small joke. But ES21 also had a scene where a player whose legs are literally shaking with the strain put on them is kept in on a physically demanding play because he is the only player that can outrun the other team's star player. The training arc was very good about teaching resting, but it also had in-game stuff that went a bit far, and even had a segment where a school that had a medically perfect training regimen was beaten by old-school semi-regular resting.

Eyeshield 21 also teaches you that black people are fundamentally, objectively better at sports than anyone else

If it weren't for the NASA coach explicitly stating this it wouldn't be that bad. A friendly, reasonably-drawn black guy who's good at his job was honestly surprising to see in a manga. There was even a point in the series where Shin was technically a better overall player, even if he wasn't necessarily faster, because Panther ran very predictably. But they really just keep hammering home the "black people are better at sports" thing by having characters talk about it almost constantly whenever Panther was playing. It was bizarre.

The lack of serious Saitama animation is what make the fight with the subterraneans so good. It's one of the few times where he's animated like a real anime protagonist, and is able to have an actual fight, and of course it's just a dream.
