I think I just had my first positive moment. Grinding through the temple ship on Classic for the first time, I carefully escorted the volunteer up to the last room with everyone looking slightly beat up except for her. I painstaking spend a few turns reloading and moving everyone around on the last door so that I can kick it down and then move everyone in. And... GO - Assault Guy leaps in and goes right behind a bit of cover and shoots, getting plasma reflected to the face (for 2). Then my sniper headshots the Uber-Etheral for 25 crit to the head and <cutscene>. I spent more time setting people up in the right order and ensuring their guns were full than I did in combat.

p.crestmont posted:Yeah I've found Flamethrower very underwhelming. There's only been one or two situations where I could actually hit more than one target, and even then it wasn't amazing (making Chrysalids run away in terror was pretty cool though). Will definitely go Kinetic strike on my next chance. I've found flamethrowers amazing anytime you get a pack of sectoid commanders in a UFO. There have been a few times where I wished I could punch something really other but I've had more opportunities to burn those mind controlling fucks to the ground.

You need to capture anything but an outsider. Also, about 6 hours ago I finished the game on classic and swore I would never play again because the early game felt a lot like punching myself in the balls (god drat it thin men) and the late game was still easy (although, double sectopods or mechtoids can definitely send things bad fast). Unfortunately, after coming back to read this this thread I now want to start another game Party Ape fucked around with this message at 08:12 on Nov 17, 2013 |

Really enjoying my first go at long war. Unfortunately I closed the read me before I really got into it so everything is completely surprising. One thing I'm not sure is a bug or not is France packing up and leaving just after the second mission with a headline about cooperating with the aliens. Is that exalt fuckery, a lwism or a weird bug?

ulmont posted:I still play vanilla. I've absorbed a lot of Long War information by osmosis, mind you. I played long war once a while ago and felt like it was being punched in the dick. I came back about beta 8 or 9ish and now it's great. Once b14 comes out and I figure out how to disable exalt it will be upgraded to excellent. (I just don't like exalt mechanics, even in vanilla ew, so I would love a second wave option to disable it - maybe the mechanics could be repurposed for the aliens but I'm not sure how.) ed: poo poo, my exalt hate rant derailed my train of thought entirely. What I meant to say was "if you tried long war a long time ago, it's definitely work a second look now."

You know, everytime I see a post like that I look left and there is a high chance (but not enough to hit a HF) of it being you defending some of the more shitastic stuff in the mod with the "yeah, that's why you bring X to the fight" argument. That's really the biggest complaint I have with long war. They went and added a bunch of cool extra stuff then undermined that with balance fixes that ensure you get hosed if you deviate from the one true path envisaged by the founders.

Re: Greenmangaming. I purchased the game after getting the 27% off code. When I went to the check out, I noticed it was $80 and assumed that it was $AUD since it was selling me an ANZ code and that's about what you'd expect for a 27% discount on a $110 game.. It wasn't and I paid $80 US for a 27% discounted copy of a game that I can get for $75 US on steam. At least we can use this as a case study on how good they are at refunds I guess.
