It's always been hard to say exactly who was targeting what, and at what points in the Cold War (as targeting doctrines and abilities changed with the times, of course), but it seems reasonably broadly accepted that Ireland wouldn't be a priority target by any stretch. A couple thrown at the North, most likely, but the Soviets have better things to do than drop nukes on Dublin and Cork. Even if the map includes possible targets in the Republic it's not unreasonable to posit there would be none.

I've heard people suggest that the USA should include Canada. I've seen people in history say it should stretch from the Pole to the Panama canal. I've even seen the occasional wacky alt-history proposal of a USA that stretches from Pole to Shining Pole (And have implemented such in Paradox videogames :911:

).

But I cannot say I have ever seen people suggest Greenland and/or Iceland should properly be part of the US. The notion that one or both voluntarily join up during/after WW2? Yes. But the idea that it's Manifest Destiny and that their absence as the 51st and 52nd states is an affront? I have to say I've never come across that myself.

I think my favorite part of that map is that the bomb has managed to annihilate everything up to the border of Israel, with the implication that Israel survives just fine. Even if we discount all the other problems caused by this, being slightly beyond the crater doesn't actually make you safe, Israel is going to be as scoured of life as anywhere within Ground Zero Ocean.

I used to get mad about 'unrealistic' alternate history, then I took a look at actual history and realized anyone from another timeline is going to think our world is nothing except stupid unrealistic Anglowank. I mean, some tiny, rainswept island nobody ever gave two shits about manages to forge the largest empire in history? One of its colonies successfully rebels (but not one that has been invaded and is filled with oppressed natives, this colony's just a bunch of British people and the natives are pretty much all gone) against this massive empire, and then that colony goes on to become even stronger and they roar across their entire continent sweeping absolutely everyone aside. Texas winning their independence? America just managing to pull off some stupidly huge amphibious landing and get to Mexico City? Sure, they mention "yellow fever" but they totally underplay its effects and act like it wouldn't cripple the US Army into uselessness. To say nothing of World War II and Britian's continually magical super navy that destroys all threats forever, except when God does it by just straight-up sinking the Spanish Armada.

It's even more recent than that, the Scottish parliament and the Welsh and Nothern Irish assemblies date from 1999 (though the Scottish parliament declared itself reconvened after a 300 year adjournment), and in practice the Northern Ireland Assembly didn't really function until 2007.

Can someone explain to a layperson what exactly the problem with mapping a sphere on a plane is? To clarify, I know that it is, and I don't question or challenge that it's a real problem or anything, but I just can't quite wrap my head around why that is. Why can't you just draw things as they are (assuming we've got an accurate look at how they are)? Why can't you just take a globe and unfold it and then you've got a map?

Thanks for all the posts in response to my question! It's a bit tricky for someone who isn't particularly educated in maths to wrap their head around but I think between all your posts and examples I'm grasping the situation well enough.

That map is blowing my mind, Canada's got way more McD's as the UK with half the population? They're not exactly uncommon here. None in Bolivia? And I know Africa isn't the most affluent of places but I can't wrap my head around the idea of places like Lagos, Addis Abeba, or Nairobi not having an outlet.
