speaking of scams..Areal's kickstarter earned ~65k (somehow, it was at 35k for weeks), but was was suspended 14 hours ago.

holy crap update 25..they link pictures of all the people they call 'trolls' for calling them out. like personal information and such. Wtf? I've never seen someone stoop that low..

Edit: and apparently they were trying to get people to think that Putin himself emailed them about the game?

West Games has posted an official statement regarding the suspension of their Areal Kickstarter campaign to Areal's Facebook page. They've resorted to asking for donations directly.

The part about the donations after the vice article is a lie. The kicktraq shows only a few donations, yet it gained 20k, a stark contrast to the start of the project.

Well, it's official, Neal Stephenson's 500k kickstarter is officially dead. 500k to come up with the conclusion that "it wasn't very fun to play."

Didn't know they also had two more pushes for 200k each in 2014. That's pretty gross.

From wikipedia:
" On 6 July 2014, there was another crowd funding campaign for bonus content. The first stretch goal is to raise $200,000 for full English voice acting in the game.[18]

On 30 October 2014, Comcept asked via their kickstarter page for an additional $198,000 to complete a DLC stage introducing Beck's rival: Ray.[19]"

edit: it's ridiculous that you cannot comment on a kickstarter if you aren't a backer. It's really obvious that this thing is a sham, but I'd have to give them money to even give a cursory warning to other people, or even link them to their own demo video.

And yet, since posting that video, their funding has sky rocketed to over 2 million.
In fact, they have made 1.5 million after posting that video. It's terrifying how gullible people are, even when shown how bad the product is by the very same people selling it.

Edit: haha. They had that one update a week in when they were at 1.5 million. Way to be supportive of the idiot saps funding your razor, skarp.

There were 22,252 successful KS projects in 2014. They don't say how many were launched in total but according to their historical data only about 35% of projects have ever been successful so we'd expect there were roughly 64,000 projects launched in 2014, or an average of 175 new projects every day. If each KS campaign lasted for a month there'd be an average of 5,250 live campaigns on any given day, most of which will be active in some way (only 4% of all KS projects received no pledges) and thus a potential risk of :siren:drama:siren: requiring staff moderation. Imagine having to moderate over 5,000 active projects every day, especially when most of them are being run by people who have very little experience in running a business, let alone an online business with set deadlines.

And those are just the 2014 stats so the 2015 stats are probably a fair amount higher. According to their stats page there are currently 5,998 live projects.

Of course those stats don't take into account the number of projects which are created and then rejected because they don't meet KS's criteria. There's no way of knowing how many of those come up every day but I'm betting there'd be a significant amount.

Last year backers pledged $529 million to KS projects which is an average of $1.4m per day or more than $1,000 per minute.

577 backers pledged $361,452 to produce a device to allow for a free range of motion in a virtual reality environment.

Currently, a year and a half after the original estimated ship date it turns out that Cyberith were relying on an outside investor on top of Kickstarter pledges to produce this thing. In a shock to no one in this thread, the outside investor pulled out leaving the device economically nonviable to produce.

But don't worry backers, while the plans for the consumer version of the device ($600-$1,000) may have fallen through, the business version of the device ($6,000) is still in production and Cyberith is generously allowing your pledge to contribute toward the purchase of that far more expensive version.

Unrelatedly, the latest backer-only update is to announce that they have produced a VR game which is now on sale on Steam; the funding for which came from :iiam:

A year and a half is nothing..this one is over two and a half years late, but actually is still in production at least. The guy shows up at all the VR events in Austin.

ok one or two mismailed envelopes with nothing in them in a batch of thousands I can see, but there appears to be a problem with these people.

"Hey Aopun, I too received an empty envelope. Opened it at the post office counter and the staff thought it was a bit funny receiving just and empty envelope from overseas. Think it is a bit funny also but could actually pls send me one this time :) Cheers James (Australia)"
"Hey Aopun : ) I too received an empty box. : ("
"Sorry double post, but is there someone to chat about for getting an empty box?"
"Hi I got an empty envelope from Canada as well."
"Empty enveloppe! How can you send so many with nothing in them?"
"Empty for me as well."
"I received my package today....and it's empty. No Aopun."
...and so on...

there were only 350 backers..how could you not hand check each package?
