I can't believe this series is almost 10 volumes deep and the title "We Never Learn" is printed all over the Japanese volumes and merch and scans are still sticking to their guns with "We Can't Study." I wonder if it's a refusal to be wrong or just apathy but either way it boggles the mind. I've seen series that kept their Japanese name before but never one that stubbornly clung to an old translation.

I loved this mini arc. If someone were to show me this I'd immediately decide to keep reading this manga.
It was so stupid.
I'm torn on outfitting Rebecca with a swimsuit though. It comes so out of left field that I couldn't help but laugh.
But it serves no purpose other than the authors horniness which is a bit annoying, but considering the other stuff he's put her through it's not that surprising either. :ohdear:
Eden's Zero is fun and that's all I want it to be. FT was at its best when it was having fun and just awful when it tried to be serious.

And yeah, Mashima may very well be The Horniest Mangaka. Arguably hornier than literal porn artists, and considering how prolific he is with manga and such, perhaps he is fueled by his desire to drive as close to the edge as he can possibly go without going over. "As long as I pretend to make this manga mainly about friendship and punching, maybe they won't mind if I keep beinga big old weirdo and making my villains sexual sadists towards the same character over and over again."

I've never read To-Love-Ru or the Yuna Hotsprings one but as I understand it they're filled with tits from the get-go and are both fanservice-focused manga right?

I guess that kind of thing might make them technically hornier, I don't know, I'd have to read the manga to gauge. (But I don't especially want to.) The way I see it, there's a difference between selling sex outright and selling something else and just stuffing it full of sex. A late night Cinemax movie VS Game of Thrones. I think Mashima's ability to maintain the facade of a typical friendship and hotblooded shonen series and just getting increasingly horny as it goes on without giving in and just making a titty manga is what earns him that title for me. For all I know, the other two could be just drawing naked ladies because it sells. Mashima I can know is doing it because he loves it and he is too horny to hold back.

That's kind of a shame, I felt like it had potential and I liked the psuedo-Law and Order "let's tie the story arcs to current-ish events" thing it had going on. But it also definitely didn't stand out the way the other big breakout hits did in their first chapters. If it's going down, Hell Warden Higuma is probably next on the block.

I like them both okay but I do agree that Higuma has a lot more to say and has had far more compelling character development. Learning why Neo is the way he is VS Who Higuma is and who he pretends to be. But both dove into major character backstory flashbacks around the same time and Higuma especially had a guy that feels like he should've been a midseries big bad show up way earlier than expected which has me concerned for its longevity.

Endeavour as we’re introduced to him is basically a super villain who only cared about marriage and children as a eugenics program to show up All Might. He seemingly never really treated his family as people. And it’s just really hard to reconcile that with recent arcs where he is just a terrible husband and father who has realised that in pursuit of power he has hurt everyone close to him and thrown away those he deep down still cared about.

The focus arc Endeavour got was actually pretty solid but it doesn’t feel like this is the same dude we were introduced to. And it makes the writing around him come off as awkward and strange.
Agreed on both points, it definitely feels like Horikoshi is backpedaling way hard on the abuse and softening the hell out of his character to make Endeavor's atonement arc work. And it does to an extent, there are Endeavor moments I've enjoyed even though I truly despised his character in the beginning and honestly still do for the most part.

Given the way it's gone down, I have to wonder if Horikoshi realized like the rest of us that Endeavor's initial plan/motivation was monumentally loving stupid. Like, given the danger and stress of Hero-ing, Endeavor had to have known that by the time Todoroki became the #1 Hero that All Might would be dead or retired, right? What did he expect to happen?

"All Might!! Behold, I have finally surpassed you! It is my son Shoto who is the #1 Hero now, not you!!!"

"Endeavor, I am sixty years old. And I have not been a hero for the last decade. Get a hobby."

Of course if All Might hadn't been injured maybe he would've been hero-ing well into his twilight years like Gran Torino is but it is still truly embarassing to think that Endeavor wanted to raise a child to show up a man 2-3 times their age and even more so that he thought All Might would be anything less than psyched about a new young hero. (Up until he realized what Endeavor'd done to make it happen at which point he would probably deck him into deep space.)

I've now written entirely too many words about this but it is just such a bad foundation for a character and while unfortunately the damage is already done, I am glad that Horikoshi scrapped it asap to focus on Endeavor's personal struggles and relationship with All Might rather than leaning into the "my strong adult son" angle.

One Piece isn't for everyone, it's okay for people to not like things.

But it is definitely the best long-running shonen series and I don't think anyone else could have done what Oda's done to keep a series this fresh and fun for such an absurdly long time. Without taking years and years on hiatus, that is.

Wano is bonkers good and it's a shame that Dressrosa and Fishman Island ran overlong and burned some people out before they could get to Zou. Zou onward has been nonstop homeruns in my clearly unbiased opinion.

Oof, that is some gross cleaning, and also it's been so long since I've read the scans that I didn't notice that they translate Sensei like a dang robot. She and her sister have a cute habit of using academic/technical phrases instead of simpler words. It doesn't work in English, or at least not the way the scans are doing it, so making them talk extra formally is much more natural.

Yeah, Zipman rules!

As for Uruka, I like her a lot and she is wonderful to Yuiga but unfortunately she is the first girl to get her big confession and conflict arc so she doesn't have a chance in hell unless this manga goes way into subversion. IMO he's gonna turn her down by saying he loves her like a sister or something (at which point Mizuki will implode like a dying star) and then we'll move on to knock down Senpai and Sensei in order to leave the final choice between Rizu and Furuhashi as the big cliffhanger choice.

People use the X confessed first thus she can't win argument a lot. But how often does that really happen? I know WNL loves it's tropes every now and then. But it this a thing that always happens in romcoms, or just something people latch on to because a few big titles have done it in the past?
Honestly? I've only read a small handful of romcoms so I'm basically just going off of Nisekoi which went through a few "ticking the boxes" arcs to eliminate girls before going on to the final two, which were the only two that had a chance to begin with. IMO Furuhashi has yet to really confess or deal with her feelings for Yuiga and Rizu hasn't formally confessed yet, plus Senpai hasn't even formally acknowledged that she likes him. There's too much left to be done for Uruka to win here. It COULD happen because who knows really, but I think the odds are way low. It would be surprising if he does like her since he doesn't know anyone else likes him so it would be interesting if they just let him go without a fight or confess anyway and things get dramatic.

The Last Saiyuki at least did the usual "and so their adventures continued" thing. The sudden time skip in Zipman is super jarring, as is how long it seems to be going for. If you have notice of the axe, why have the MC spend two chapters fighting this guy?

In other news I am so happy about this WNL twist. On one hand sure, narrative integrity and complete storytelling and all that. But on the other hand, I get to see Fumino win in an alternate universe and thanks to Tsutsui's cowardice I didn't have to suffer through seeing her confess and get rejected before the "Canon" Uruka ending.
