this is like saying it would be great to be a porn star so you can be paid to have sex all day

it doesn't actually matter what you are doing. sure, some jobs are worse than others, but all jobs are jobs. as you point out, someone else is deriving the gains, the "fruits of your labor."

no amount of "fun" or engagement with your work will give you your life back

parts of what you're saying is obvious poo poo to everyone (it would be better if you didn't haven't to work) but in general I think you're missing the point. not everyone is the same don't forget and some people really enjoy the day to day pleasantries and "what did you do on the weekend" and so a mildly satisfying job with satisfactory pay check is quite important compared to working their rear end off at something they hate for more money to free themselves: don't apply your ahitty worldview to everyone else

some people would still go to work even if they had no financial reason to, but I bet you don't get this. I wouldn't personally but I get it that others do

i once spent several months without a job just for fun. i could afford it so i just decided to take an extended stay-cation and enjoy myself. my pattern of daily activities was actually quite similar to my day job. i spent a lot of time coding. i spent a lot of time reading about cool new stuff in the industry. it was genuinely fun and i loved it

doing extremely similar tasks for someone else is like pulling teeth. someone else chooses my priorities. someone else determines the requirements. someone else tells me where i should show up and what time. and that sucks. it's those qualities that make a set of tasks into a "job."

not surpsisingly you don't have any feelings of loss against not ever seeing other human beings

hackbunny posted:

you aren't really supposed to do COM in C. it's supported officially (see the tons of macros tool and poo poo), but microsoft assumed C++ at the very least. problem with that is that the C++ compiler has to create vtables with the layout COM expects, which is a really low bar to clear re. C++ ABI but still gcc for years wasn't compatible

anyway COM is kid's stuff, OLE is a whole another matter. what VB really helped with was OLE/automation. implementing OLE objects in bare C/C++ is not hard, just incredibly tedious (an embeddable OLE control means implementing over a dozen interfaces before you even start giving it some behavior) and even easier to get wrong accidentally. what's really hard (i.e. massively more tedious) is calling OLE objects, especially dynamically. in VB you don't even notice if you're calling an object statically or dynamically, the syntax is exactly the same. in C or C++, you have to look up the method name, build the argument list as an array of VARIANTs (looking up the ids of named arguments, if you use them), call the method, unpack the outputs from an array of VARIANTs. not to mention that VB can generate and consume type metadata natively while in C or C++ you have to write the metadata in IDL, compile with MIDL, and then use MIDL or your compiler's tools to generate the header files from the type library (jesus)

I need to find some trivial WSH script and try to rewrite it in C to show you just how much poo poo goes behind the scenes. I won't demonstrate how to write an ActiveX control manually because that strays into self-harm territory

nobody writes COM/OLE poo poo in C though, and who does it in C++ uses frameworks like ATL to make it a little less than ridiculous. I do wonder if C++1x can make it better though, especially now that we can almost do compile-time introspection

these hackbunny quotes are some of my favorite things in yospos

Luigi Thirty posted:

as usual, 1970s ataris have wacky video capabilities that other things of the time couldn't do

the architecture includes an ASIC that operates independently of the CPU which allows all kinds of video manipulation. it supports 16 video modes (5 text, 11 graphics) at resolutions from 40x24 to 320x192 and can switch between them at the start of any scanline. it can fire off interrupts at programmed points on the screen, jump to other display lists, all kinds of things. you put together a program and point it to the memory you want it to display. if you're in a text mode, you give it a pointer to a string. if you're in graphics mode, you give it an array of graphics data. it fetches glyphs or pixel data through DMA and sends the graphics data to the GTIA chip at the proper times, which is a direct improvement over the atari 2600 which required the CPU to do all that manually. it frees the CPU from shoveling graphics around and allowing more complicated displays than computers of the time, which were probably based on off-the-shelf display generators like the TMS9918 used in the MSX, TI/99, and even game consoles like the colecovision and master system.

so in your computer from 1979, you get a multi-resolution display, 4 independently-colored hardware sprites, and 2 missile graphics! what a bargain

if that sounds like the Amiga's Copper, that's because Jay Miner was also in charge of the video chipset for the atari 8-bits!

cool
