It's probably for the best anyway...with Veritas it was a loss but Tokyo Ghoul's been pretty lame for a while.
I'm behind on pretty much all the good series but impulsively started reading Arion. It's a little too dumb/oldschool/simple for my tastes, but it has its moments.
I'm surprised by the rate and ease we seem to be seeing the Greek gods die at Arion's hands, unless those turn out to be illusions or they can resurrect themselves somehow. I also don't really like the handling of Athena. She just doesn't seem very Athena except in appearance, I get the personalities and depictions of these gods are kind of twisted, I like crazy old coot Zeus, but the character Athena doesn't really seem to have much Athena in her other than being a warrior woman. I hope Ares comes back.
Also every moment with Apollo is usually gold. His depiction as a snooty rapey rear end in a top hat who curses like a 13 year old on the internet is pretty much spot on.

Is The Heroic Legend of Arslan any good?

I mean the books were by the LoGH guy and the manga is by Arakawa so it should be great, but I never hear anyone talk about it so I kinda figure it might be a case where two good things just don't mix together well?
I mean, I'm enjoying it a lot, but I don't talk about it much either. I think it's just because it's monthly and just getting started, so even now we're still only getting a taste of what's to come...so there's not a lot to discuss or rave about quite yet. Also I think I might have actually seen it discussed in the historical manga thread (though barely that much there, it's mostly Historie/Vinland Saga/Otoyomegatari), so that also might be why.
But yeah, like you said, cool setting, established skilled manga-ka, I'm following it and reading it monthly for a reason. I expect good things.

argh, I'm gonna have to reread all of March Comes in Like a Lion, Historie, and Vagabond at this point considering they're so slow I remember barely anything about the characters and plot by the time anything comes out. At least it'll be fun.
Also Natsunokumo (which I really liked) if it ever starts updating again after like 300 years, but at least that'll be a shorter reread.

Maybe I should get back into that series, it's just that the whole GIANT-TITTED DEMON QUEEN FANSERVICE is basically a fundamental part of the manga's aesthetic (at least where I was reading, I mean a pivotal character is basically designed like some kind of hentai poo poo or something) kind of giving me immediate douchechills. Hey, I don't see her in this chapter, sweet!
I know people tend to go, "hey that's just manga" (especially outside of ADTRW), but actually you can find a lot of good manga that doesn't have creepy weird awkward "anime/manga stuff" in it...does eliminate a lot of series though.

I like inuyashiki because it is following up on the sadly underutilized 'virtuous old man gets super powers' concept from gantz. Like, whenever the old man got an appearance in gantz it always seemed like he would have been a way better protagonist than weepy douchebag kurono.

Pity the actual manga is middling at best, though.
Yeah, but middling is still better than second-half Gantz so I'm mostly sticking along, we all know this dude's limitations so it'll probably turn from middling to lame sooner than later but oh well. I agree about the protagonist, that is at least a plus for it, and so far (at least where I caught up) it doesn't look like the evil robot guy or whatever, who is a weepy douchebag kurono, gets as much screentime...I mean he gets his, obviously, but I like the idea that the old man remains central protagonist so we have less teenage sociopath.

I wouldn't actually recommend Inuyashiki to anyone though, unless you're where I am where you've read most of the typical recommended excellent manga on ADTRW and just skim/sample a buncha random series that vary from good to middling. Like if you're someone who hasn't read the best of say, Naoki Urasawa or say, gotten into Vinland Saga/Historie/I Am a Hero/etc, don't even bother validating the Gantz guy with your attention any further. I mean even with sci-fi/action manga, there are better dudes to choose from. Cool old dude though.

I didn't really get very far after the whole PAIN AND TORTURE HAVE GIVEN ME ABS, BLACK FINGER NAILS, AND WHITE HAIR

it's like a new super saiyan paradigm man

it's kind of sad considering the promise of the first chapter (the early chapters really do feel like a series from someone less retarded, it's like they switched writers like that other dumb thing Ajin or w/e). It went to poo poo faster than any manga I've read, Gantz didn't go to poo poo that quickly! It's sad reading posts of mine in this thread in like May talking about how Tokyo Ghoul is this fun new promising action series I'm reading.
I know it didn't have a lot of brains or nuance to begin with, but it's remarkable how much dumber it got, like all of a sudden it went from this:

to this:

(and it's really not the translation that's the issue. I wonder if the manga-ka got brain damage or something)

Are you guys talking about Jigoku no Alice? That's a pretty decent series and while I'm sure it has some typical Matsumoto weirdness I don't seem to remember any graphic rape or anything like that. I think it's a pretty good series, though it doesn't get updated super often. He's possibly my favorite manga-ka, but he does often do some sexually weird/hosed up poo poo (though just as often there are his series where I don't feel like the sexuality is gratuitous or meant to be fanservice, just part of what he does).

TheFallenEvincar posted:

Right? Some of the visuals Jiro Matsumoto brings to the plate are just amazing. It's one of my personal favorites.

If you liked that, Freesia and Tropical Citron are two more series of his. Both pretty surreal and intense. I also really liked his collections of short story manga, like Keep on Vibrating and A Revolutionist in the Afternoon. He's got a new ongoing series (at least I think it's new) set in the post-apocalypse, Jigoku no Alice, that is fairly decent right now but I'm not quite sure if it's going to reach the heights of some of his other full-length series, we'll see I guess.

TheFallenEvincar posted:

I really like Freesia, Tropical Citron, Uncivilized Planet, and a couple of his short story collections...didn't bother with Wendy or any of the other weird series he did that got too fetishistic. Here I thought I was the only Matsumoto fan around here, I remember making a thread devoted to him no one really posted in.

I was kind of disappointed by the new I Am a Hero volume (the Kengo Hanazawa thread is gone now right?)...it might just be me or a result of having waited so long that I lost the storyline momentum, but I wasn't really a fan of much that happened (and not much happened, so it was like...I waited for this? I feel like individual chapters of the story had way more going on in them compared to this volume) and for the first time it kind of felt to me like Hanazawa wasn't sure where he was taking the story or what he was doing exactly. I mean the Italy stuff was cool, but I'm not a fan of it going so Apocalypse no Toride (though hey, good timing for that series ending) or the abrupt character death. Or how highschooler+goon protagonist actually seems like a possible thing now and she's like, falling for him? C'mon Hanazawa
Come back Emperor Two Shovels. :(

And I'm not even bothering to finish Shamo at this point. I'll get around to the disappointment of that eventually...I finally read Imperial Guards at least, so that was awesome. Strains of Gunka no Baltazar with other cool poo poo, though I was pretty bummed that it had to end like that. I was excited to see the political intrigue of this sort of Russo-Japanese War.

thanks for constantly recommending Dorohedoro over the years btw ya'll, because it was always one of those series I put aside like "well, I'm sure this is good but the art style is too much of a turnoff for me to read much of it" but after sleeping on it for forever I finally put that aside and after the initial one chapter ease-in period I'm hooked and horrified and laughing and puking. The cool thing about Dorohedoro is that despite most of the important characters being pretty hard to kill and stay dead, what with Noi, the good doctor, demon goat cat, etc. the series still so far retains this sense of brutality and tension (in between the laughs) that I don't feel like any character is truly "safe".
I'm gonna be really bummed if my favorite character, the best character (clearly), and best-dressed character (great sneakers), Johnson bites it

honestly ive havent read much of this guys manga and maybe suicide island is good I dont know got enough poo poo to read but poo poo holyland sucked balls. If this guy was telling the truth about having been in a number of street fights he must have got his rear end kicked every time because he gives so truly questionable advice. At one point he suggests backing yourself into a corner against a karate street fighter to stop them from using round kicks? Like dude, now you're in a corner with no where to go so whoa he can't use round kicks now he will just use other kick or just punch you in the face cause you are not really going to be able to dodge or create distance because you are in a corner. gently caress. also when the wrestler explains that he is better when fighting on grass or sand because on concrete and asphalt if he can't shoot low or whatever on takedowns cause he will scrap his knees. hahaha what!!! just wear jeans dude. or scrape your knees cause the alternative is getting knocked the hosed out. also the mc becomes an elite fight via uhhhh literally lots of shadow boxing(just 1 2 lol), kicking a pad with the same kick for a few hours one time, and read probably a tkd book and practices doing a spin side kick. then he uses that side kick to beat some super good high school kendo stick fighter or whatever. it's funny as gently caress. you see, he could hit the kick but due to distance he could not be hit severely with the stick + knocks the guy out with one blow. he also does some dopey rolls to increase and close the distance but uhhhh I guess you can't swin a kendo stick enough to hit a target bellow waist height. this shits all just funny coming from a manga that is supposed to be realistic hahaha. oh yeah he also did 100 push ups everyday.

the real reason I dropped it was because all the characters where garbage and the king of trash town was the mc. drat did he suck. just terrible. he reminds me of the mc from eden: it's an endless world, which is a manga that I also believe is worthless. I also really like talking about manga I vehemently disliked.
