I did a VERY basic critique of the first job entry on your resume. Right now, you have a great deal of words here, but you aren't really communicating that much. You need to focus on details and specifics and use less ambiguous language. Hopefully you can see my comments on the first job and use the principles expressed in them to improve the content throughout. Hope this helps!

I definitely agree that most goons seeking a resume critique would be better served watching the thread and reading all of the great information already posted. However, it is one thing to read about a good resume compared to actually seeing the mistakes on paper through resume critiques. The last thread worked so well because people would post and critique each others resumes and CVs. I think we should continue doing so in this thread.

If you or others agree, would you mind editing the O.P. so readers are aware that posting their resume for critique by other Goons is encouraged?

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10949028/goonresume.docx

Some background info:

I graduated from college last May. After high school I was going to work part time and go to college but that part time job bagging groceries quickly turned into an amazing full time job. I worked too much for school and was making $20/hour plus amazing benefits (union job). In 2005 the company started closing the stores in the area as the leases on the properties came up.

So when I was laid off I went to college to get my degree in accounting like I originally planned. I applied to accounting firms after graduating and only got one reply. Went in for an interview and thought it went well, but I was super nervous and had to interview with each person at the firm. I had a really awkward interview with one of the partners and didn't get the job. Since then I've been applying for any entry level accounting position I see in my area on craiglist, indeed, linkedin, monster, or from word of mouth.

I get very few call backs. I've had multiple people tell me they want someone that has experience in X accounting software (quickbooks, great plains, dynamics, yardi, peachtree), they're too busy to train, want someone that can just dive in, etc. I've even applied for jobs that said in all caps "NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED" or "ENTRY LEVEL ACCOUNTING". First question I get asked is if I do accounting at my current job and I try to BS and say "no, but I have taken a quickbooks course and done some light bookkeeping...". The interview just goes downhill from there.

Any advice or critiques would be welcome.

Yes, I am posting very incomplete resumes because this just happens to be the people who are asking for resume critiques. I am in no way trying to show anyone here a complete product, but to give some very basic free advice that can point people in the right direction. Certainly nothing I’ve put on here is, or even remotely resembles, a finished product.

My critiques are intended to point to specific issues and show quick and easy ways individual resumes can be improved. I often choose the most incomplete resumes because I feel that the owners of those resumes would benefit most from a basic critique.

“Dur,” I’m glad you find them helpful. I guess I should make it clear that my critiques are the starting point, not the final destination. Anyone following my advice as a rule would be missing the point entirely. Though I don't think "dur" was implying that he or she is doing that either.

If anyone wants me to critique a more advanced resume, I would be happy to do so. I will still have many issues to critique, just different ones.

Where is an appropriate place to stick your references? Is it best to give them their own section or put them under their relevant entries in the Experience section?

It depends on your country and industry. If you are in America for example, you should create a separate references document to send to an employer only when they request them. However, sometimes there are exceptions like in academia. Otherwise do not make any mention of references on your resume. On the other hand, in certain countries in Europe for example, you can list the actual references at the bottom of your resume.

Both CV and resume length is a tricky issue that there is all sorts of conflicting advice about. Basically a CV or resume needs to be as tight as possible, and by "tight" I mean a the document needs to have as much relevant information as possible and as little irrelevant information as possible. Usually, when done well, this will result in a document that is one or two pages long. The "one page rule" is a handy guideline for some situations (like for most recent university graduates) but it is actually pretty antiquated as a hard and fast rule.

A two page CV or resume is fine, as long as all the content is relevant and the two page version delivers value that a one page resume couldn't, meaning that a one page resume would force you to get rid of accomplishments that would help you secure an interview. If we are cutting relevant material that adds value just to get to a page, then we are diminishing the value of the resume forcing it to be a page long. However, having a neat one-page resume has it's own value. So we have to balance the value of a one page resume vs. a 1.5 or two page resume with more relevant content and determine which is most valuable for your specific situation.

That being said academics and people with many years of job experience can justify three, or in some cases, four page resumes or CVs. There are also different formatting issues and preferred lengths for different countries.

corkskroo posted:

Also, with CVs is it ok to play creative with the formatting when applying to a creative/design job?

I suggest you keep your CV simple and easy to read. It can work but the safest bet is to use your portfolio to demonstrate your creative abilities. Hopefully you have an online portfolio you can link to in your CV.

Also, to add to the discussion, everything always needs to be in past tense on a resume or CV. There are many reasons for this. One of them is that if you say you are "doing" something you are implying the possibility of failure. When you say you "did" something you are turning a task into an accomplishment and using strong, confident language. And yes, you also want the whole document to be in one consistent tense.

Hey folks, I'm looking at possible new work so I figured I'd spruce up my resume. Does anyone mind taking a look?

I'd be happy to provide a detailed critique if you upload this as a .doc file. I can't mark up .pdfs, so if anyone wants me to provide a basic critique, please upload the resume in question as a .doc file.

Thanks, I appreciate it! Here's a link to mine in doc format. I've updated it a little bit based on feedback from this thread.

I'm still having a problem flowing over on to 2 pages. Do you have any suggestions for what could be cut to fix that? Keep in mind that the publication list is about 6 lines long or so (3 entries, 2 lines each.)

The main problems with this is a lack of context for anything you discuss in the bullet points. I imagine the name of the company will make this a little clearer, but you are a little too deep in the technical specifics without giving any context or big picture information. Remember, an HR rep is usually the first person who will read this. You need to make it clear to them what the projects are, and then add on the technical details.

As far as getting this across one page goes, you can mention your publications in one bullet point in the research position. You could also cut from the summary, and consolidate the multiple sentences in the bullet points. This will give you more room. Or, you could add more spacing and put this across two pages, which is fine for your experience. It's this 1 page plus just a little more you want to avoid.

New to the whole corporate world job search thing. I met with a career person that directed me to use a "functional resume" to try to show skill crossover from past jobs/school to match job duties.

This is all new to me (I've been in EMS virtually my whole adult life).
I could definitely use some help/feedback for my resume.

I've only sent out a few so far, but in this format (customized to each job).

You need to get rid of the functional resume format. Here is a VERY basic critique, but basically this needs to be completely reorganized and redone. Hope this helps!

While looking around last night at some resume resources I saw one that mentioned "full time student" under the employment heading. What do you guys think about that? It would actually allow me to close that gap, but also explain how my research is pertinent to the job as well.

Master list:

Rather than put full-time student, create a section called "Academic Projects".

Treat this like a work experience section. Include a section heading, the name of each project, when edyou work on the project (month year - month year), and if you had a specific title or role in the project (i.e. Project Manager). Provide a description of the work you did on this project, and make sure to specifically mention specific types of software, tools, methodologies, and processes you used that are relevant to the industry you want to work in. It's important to work into the description whether you did this work as a member of a team or solo, including how many students were on the team. Often times your end result is a paper or presentation. If that is the case, include information about the length of paper and/or presentation (how many pages was the paper? How many minutes was the presentation?).

Here is an example:

ACADEMIC PROJECTS (the heading)

(Project Title) Experimental Economics: Strategy and Game Theory (Dates) April 2013 – June 2013
- Developed and implemented an original investigation into moral hazard and incentives to cheat given various levels of available information in a controlled game with thirteen participants.
- Wrote a 30-page report that graphically and mathematically analyzed results with MS Excel and Stata.
