I'm giving McDonald's Luna series a shot. Hopefully it'll scratch the itch of Game of Thrones in Space that The Expanse completely failed at for me.

(I think why I didn't like The Expanse is because I don't actually want GoT in space, I want scheming political space bullshit, with none of the extraneous snow/space zombie rubbish)

Is the Expanse really compared to GOT though, apart from being written by GRRM's helper monkey? Regardless, Luna is probably what you're after. Even McDonald himself calls it Game of Domes.

How's the new Expanse anyway? I'm just starting Book 5 and didn't mind Book 4, which seems to be regarded as the low point (?).

New Craig Schaefer book around the 5th or so.

It's out!

Someone read it so they can tell me how related to the Revanche cycle it really is, 'cos I'm not sure I be arsed reading books 2-4 of that. I didn't mind the first book, but I just don't seem to have any desire to continue for some reason.

For those that have read the other two Takeshi Kovacs books - are they pretty consistently good? What about Morgan's other books? I don't hear him mentioned very often apart from Altered Carbon - were his other ones not as popular?

The second one is great, but don't go in expecting more space noir, it's a war/ancient alien artifact story. I believe the third switches genres in the same way too.

I enjoyed Elysium Fire but felt that where it ultimately ended up was pretty so-so for a proper return to the RS universe. Although I'm assuming there's a few more Prefect books coming up now.

I forget, is the cause of the melding plague explained anywhere? I'm not sure if that's where the books are headed or not.....

On a related note: After watching the show I wanted to read some other SciFi + Detective + Action stuff (I'd read AC fairly recently) and ended up with Gridlinked by Neal Asher and I'm about a third of the way through and not particularly impressed so far. The first chunk of the book was really generic and bland, especially compared to Banks, Reynolds et al. It suddenly got a lot more interesting though, so I'll stick with it to see if it goes anywhere. Does anyone else have any recommendations? I really enjoyed Altered Carbon, Chasm City (Reynolds), I loved Peter Hamilton's Commonwealth Saga (even though I'm not a huge fan of his other stuff, this actually reminds me a lot of the 'suddenly got a lot more interesting' aspect of Gridlinked). I guess the Hyperion Cantos has elements of this as well, some Iain M Banks fits as well .

Edit: Crossover with the Expanse as well, at least the early ones. Essentially looking for books or series where an individual or small team is investigating something amidst bigger sci fi goings on.

Something Coming Through by Paul McAuley.

I hear the sequels aren't the same noir style as AC, so I'm just wondering if it's worth grabbing em.

How do you feel about Ancient Alien Artifacts and the implications of stack technology in a war torn planet setting?

Yeah grab it now while it's free because the ebook is undeniably overpriced the rest of the year.

It's £2.22 in the UK and branded a 'Kindle Single' which seems about right. The sequels are all listed at £8 though, gently caress that.

Are they all novellas, or are the new ones actually novel length?

If novellas, yeah that's expensive and I'll unfortunately need to wait a few months after they're released before the price drops to a point where it makes sense.

160 pages apparently, but I guess pre release data can be wrong. The release schedule doesn't point towards them being door stoppers though.

Which? The Revanche Cycle is self-contained and done at this point, it's not a bad little fantasy epic but nothing earth shattering. I haven't read the other book he put out at the beginning of the year, which seems like it's going to maybe be its own series? A friend read it and really liked it, but Schaefer could poo poo on a paper plate and this guy would probably read it with joy.

It features Faust, Black, Calypso, Nyx, pretty much everyone. I really liked it.

Edit: It might be the most mythology-heavy book he's done (and the Revanche connections are explicit). I'm not sure if it's meant to be the series where major storylines are concluded or not. Either way, the setup for the next book seems really cool.

Hey, is Excession a particularly bad Culture book? Asking cause I know goons like that series but I just finished that book today and I gotta say, I'm not a fan of the "vivacious and enthusiastic" rape aliens, the guy who really wanted to be a rape alien, or the girl whose character traits were that she was vain and shallow and wanted to have sex with every boy.

Haven't actually read it, but it's generally considered one of the best.

Was going to mention the Redemption Arc chase so I guess I have to read these Risen Empire books now.

Edit: Wait, looks like there was some book-splitting shenanigans? This seems to have both parts?

I don't know why, but I thought Ninefox was much more 'hard sci fi' than it was so I was pretty bemused for a while. If I'd known it was more 40K I'd have had an easier time at the start.

So I finished the new Alastair Reynolds book, Shadow Captain (sequel to Revenger). I honestly almost didn't finish it and I've pretty much liked everything else he wrote. There's some cool pay-off in a couple larger themes to the story that I really hope he covers eventually like the quoins and the actual reason behind the weird occupation cycle but holy hell the entire middle 80% of the book was so, so boring. It reminded me of the last Star Wars movie where there's essentially a boring-rear end sidequest to the Casino planet. Whatever though I'll keep throwing money his way :(

Yeah, I'm 55% through and kinda struggling. I really like the overall setting with regards to the Worlds, Baubles and Occupations around the dying sun, but at the same time kinda dislike the whole age of sail but in space 'low tech' thing that's going on. The beginning suggested that this book was really going to delve into the mysteries of the setting, but going by the current pace and events, I'm guessing at most it's going to end with a tease that things will get interesting in the next book.
