Hotline Miami is a top-down action game released in 2012 for the PC by Jonatan "Cactus" Söderström and Dennis Wedin. It delved into the neon soaked underbelly of 1980s Miami crime in an intense (and intensely violent) frenzy of hazy rage.

Semi-recently Hotline Miami was announced to be coming out on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita on June 25 for $10/£7.29/€8.99. The PlayStation version comes with trophies, touch-based lock-on for the Vita, leaderboards, and earlier access to a new mask, Russel the Raging Bull. (It was noted that Russel would "probably come in a patch" for the PC later on. It's also a cross-buy title, so one purchase gains players access to both versions.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKTXLwfvOTI

Set (Mostly) in the 90s, Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number is the sequel slated for release in late 2013https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2iPqdofc6g. Originally starting out as DLC, Cactus and Dennis decided they had unfinished business with the series and turned it into a full-fledged release of it's own, the concluding half of the Hotline Miami story. While the core gameplay will be the same, specifics have changed. Instead of playing as a single character with different masks, a cast of different characters have their own abilities and agendas.

It wouldn't be Hotline Miami without a phenomenal soundtrack, and so far Wrong Number is living up to the first game. Some artists, such as M|O|O|N and Perturbator will be returning alongside new artists like Tape.

Dennis Wedin has indicated that Wrong Number will try to evoke a greater range of emotions then the original with a stronger focus on narrative, while not detracting from the gameplay. The story will center on a variety of characters and points in time both before and after the events of Hotline Miami 1. Other then the thus-far announced Pig Butcher and the Fans, we'll be hearing about more characters as the game's release comes nearer.

So far, it certainly seems more brutal then even the first game's astounding violence.

Finally, Rock Paper Shotgun has their impressions thus far if you're into that sort of thing.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/06/19/revealed-hotline-miami-2-wrong-number/

Time will tell if Wrong Number lives up to the first game, but either way, it'll be a ride.

Several months after the release of Wrong Number, an enterprising fellow going by spncryn on moddb and Reddit decided to make a full-sized new game taking place 20 years or so after the events of Hotline Miami 2's final (chronological) scene.

Midnight Animal features a brand-new story, new mask powers, weapons, characters, enemy types and even whole new gameplay features. It's been officially supported by Dennis Wedin and Jonaton Soderstrom, as well as a number of musicians featured in both Hotline Miami games, as well as some who weren't. Midnight Animal is currently set to be release August 16, 2016 with a shareware-style demo titled For This Dear Flag to come by the end of February.

Midnight Animal will has been greenlit on Steam, and will be completely free. The creator has a Patreon which he has clearly stated won't impact the quality of the mod, but if you enjoy it and want to support him personally in his efforts after it's completion, it's there for that.

Is it just me, or has HLM gotten REALLY buggy all of a sudden?

I've never had any problems other then with Fun and Games when the game had just came out, but I can't finish Overdose now because the game keeps flipping out and dieing.

He also mentioned something about a Humble Indie Bundle bonus level, anyone know what it is?

Oh, and rewatching the Rezzed levels at 7:10 I noticed something:

Also, while replaying the first game to see the true ending legitimately I discovered for the first time that the game has a lock on feature. Good god I feel like an idiot for beating it last time with manual aim, this plays so much better now.

The tutorial mentions it but then again the tutorial sucks.

Jacket's been confirmed as coming back, as a non-playable character of some kind. I've tried to pester Cactus about our lovable Biker friend but Cactus wouldn't say anything.

PhoneHom could have gone either way in this. Jacket could easily re-imagine himself as the winner of that fight when looking back, even if he really limped home after getting a face-full of boot. Failing to stop the biker could even be what got Richter sent after him.

The great thing about a work that leaves stuff up in the air rather than spelling it out is that there's room for lots of thoughts to work.

That makes a lot of sense, actually. Why else would they send Richter after him, unless they were scared he was too good at killing or something? The mob hadn't been wiped out yet and he was still going strong, or so it seemed.

In light of the earlier conversations, this should hopefully prevent them from being an issue.

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/09/05/hotline-miami-devs-reconsidering-sexual-assault-scene

The long short of it is, Cactus and Dennis Wedin reflected on the response to the contraversy. They decided to take it out of the demo, and re-asses if it'll be in at all.

Also noteworthy is the term "female characterS". Sounds like there's quite a few characters yet to be seen.

Lastly, I can't find the article, but Dennis mentioned the movie director had met Jacket during the previous game, and someone who completely had no source claimed that Pig Butcher is Jacket. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

So, the latest patch fixed a few of the bugs making the game really easy.

Namely you can be shot when executing an enemy, you can be shot when you're right up against a guy and dogs will whip around to kill you.

Unrelatedly, I tweeted Dennis Wedin asking if the Biker would be in HLM2 or not and he said that 'You'll find out!'.

If the Biker and Jacket are both in HLM2 I won't know what to think. :psyduck:

This is a nice Biker cosplay. Simple and effective.

Found it on Twitter a few days ago.

Unrelatedly, apparently there was a few plot details leaked. Who knows if they're true.

The director is the bearded man from the previous game. He met Jacket at some point and that inspired him to make the movie. Jacket is the Pig Butcher using an alias. :iiam:

I'm wondering if we're going to play as the Biker in the pre-Hotline Miami levels from earlier in the 80s.

Then again we might end up with the ninja girl from Showdown because there's more then one female playable character in this and none of the Fans are.

Maskless guy's just outside the bar in that demo, too. Maybe that's where most/all of the playable people hang out, not just the Fans? Probably not Pig Butcher or the mobster.

Edit: Nevermind, dumb question/speculation. But here's an interesting video from Nigel Lowrie where he goes into a bit more detail on some of the new stuff. Apparently one of the new guys is a detective.

The eurogamer guy was suspecting that the blonde man might be an undercover operative, what with the cops showing up at the end of the department store level.

I strongly suspect that the playable mobster is the one that the Fans kill. Re-watching the older stuff, he says "I quit. Didn't I tell you? Last week." and "I just want to go home".

One of the other things was that Dennis Wedin used a plural for female characters in an early interview. I wonder if there'll be playable women other then Ash, and if that's the case, just how many characters are there? So far it appears to be 8(9).

Yeah, the playable mobster is really obviously the same dude as the one who got executed by the Fans. At the very least the character model is identical; I mean, all the HLM1 mobsters looked the same too but none of them were major characters and I imagine weren't literally supposed to be assumed to look the exact same as each other. Wondering just how long this game's gonna be with at least eight or nine playable people.

I could've sworn the skin tone was different. The mobster in Execution seemed to have really dark skin.

Also no, they weren't literally supposed to look the same. :v:

I think Cactus talked about it just being an aesthetic choice to go with the hazy, frenzied horrifying and awesome violence in the game and the second game has that too but there's also more to it, which is why the enemies are somewhat more varied.

The boss fights were the most exhausting parts of the first game for me, they took too many hits and every time you restarted you still had to sit through their little dialogue, which broke the fast-paced rhythm of how the game usually plays.

I dunno. The bosses didn't take many hits. The director was barely a threat as a combat shotgun meant he was no more challenging then a normal enemy. The biker was hard but my favorite part of the entire game. He just took two hits. The van you could do with a single combat shotgun, the police chief only took one hit and the last boss took 8 hits 2 per part.

Flesnolk posted:

If you shotgun the director if it doesn't kill him you can go to the top floor again.
