the spyder posted:Holy loving lol- I found out how the electrical fire started. In attempt to heat protect the wiring harness, the PO wrapped it in aluminum foil and silicon tape... On the secondary fusebox 8g wire, he wrapped aluminum tape ALL the way to the top of the terminal, connecting it to 12v power. This then charged the entire aluminum "heat wrap" and as soon as a ground was made, shorted the entire system. Amazing it did not burn to the ground. I will get a picture tomorrow. Or for instance, if a customer wanted one for a daily driver, nothing over the top, just decent power with more focus on reliability? Why not a mazda 3 hatch? It's not AWD, but it fits all the other criteria and they are at least engaging to drive for a regular car

In the two years I had mine I had to replace both front wheel bearing/hubs. One came off and replaced easy, the other needed a puller and a whole lot of force to come out and the new one to go back on. I broke the speed sensors too because they were cheap pieces of poo poo

the spyder posted:The average price for a FD has gone up $5-6k over the last three years. That shell was a rip off. I'd pay maybe $5k for something like that, but I would also have all the "missing" parts. $18k is not unheard of now for a clean FD. We have a customer who bought a second FD over the summer from someone who kept it garaged and didn't drive it much. The thing is mint as could be and had about 15k miles on it I think. The tech who does all of the rotary cars told me he paid about 22k for it, and then spent another 2-3k on work done because it had been sitting for a while. You could eat off the engine bay it was so clean and the bolts on the exhaust and the rest of the underside of the car looked brand new

BloodBag posted:Seeing how rare these cars are now, I wonder what it's competition of the era costs? The NSX and the 4th gen Supra must also be into stupid money territory. I so rarely see any of these three vehicles these days. Come to think of it, I rarely saw these(FD, NSX, Supra) when they were new. You can get an NSX for a lot less than that on average, that's an outlier

The S only has catastrophic problems if you buy an automatic. The auto trans in the S is made out of glass and grenades itself All the other issues with them are just annoying maintenance poo poo and some body rust problems. If you have owned a BMW or other needy cars it isn't that big of a deal aside from having to tear the front of the car apart sometimes. Doing the front control arm bushings can be a huge bitch though if you don't have the right tools or know someone who does and will knock em out for some beer and a pat on the rear end The new ones are kinda lovely though, they don't drive as nice as the first gens IMO either and keep getting bigger/heavier. They have all the current BMW issues plus a few of their own. Granted our roads here suck, but I keep paying tickets out for doing front strut mounts and wheel bearings on 30k mile cars while I don't have to do that on the BMW cars. double post but my mini held up good in the accident I got in as well. It wasn't as fast as your wifes (my airbags didn't go off) but the jeep cherokee (or whatever it was) looked worse off than my car did. The front end of the car is fairly stout cause everything is packed in there tightEightBit posted:I've known two people that owned Minis. Yes, past tense. They were unreliable garbage. Both of them consumed oil like a two-stroke, much more than a quart every 6000 miles; one friend was putting in over a quart a week, and that oil is not cheap. Mine liked oil too but the actual BMW allowed tolerance for burning oil is pretty high. A full quart over 1k miles... which if you are hitting that (or close to it) and going the full 7500 or more between changes will leave you empty. Any car sucking down a quart a week though is either leaking something fierce or about to blow itself up Nodoze fucked around with this message at 17:24 on Jan 21, 2016 |
