This Nasomi private server is pretty dope. Everything runs well and there are a lot of players around. It also has a system that scales levels up/down according to server population to make sure there are people to group with.

Alternatively there are usually around 2000 people on asura at any time.

That costs money though right?

Having said that, wow, I just did a little googling and it sounds like you can go from 0-99 in like two weeks. I opened a ticket with Square to see if they still had my old accoutn from 2003 - they seem to have retained it (last logged in like 2007) but I forgot my secret question so I'm waiting on them to get back to me.

I've been having a ton of fun on the Nasomi shard. Big influx of lower level players makes partying a breeze and the AH has lots of lowish level stuff at reasonable prices, and its possible to make money early on leveling in the right places. The server owner also added some NMs (I'm not sure what the diff is between them except that BCNM are every 10 levels and you need seals) that you see around in different zones. Everything works well, the only issue is one player completely ruined the price of Refresh so Red Mage is unplayable for most people and the class has been effectively murdered, so I'm gonna abandon my RDM in one level and level up WHM/BLM to 30 before going BRD.

Frog Act

I like the original missions for Bastok so far, they're well written and interesting. I also love the little things about this game, like the lady who gave me a travelers hat for bomb ash she needed to clean my chimney

Just hit 18 RDM and I'm gonna level BLM to 15, WHM to 20, then pick up BRD and run with it

Level DNC to 49, then switch to BRD/DNC dual-wielding daggers and singing/dancing your way to 99. Missions were so much quicker with Spectral Jig + Chocobo Mazurka zooming thru zones at high speed to find the next ??? or boss fight. Also Haste and Attack songs make your Trusts more powerful and throw a Refresh song on mages when they get low. Makes fights more interesting than just auto attacking nonstop.

I'm playing on the Nasomi private server so its only up to Treasures of Aht'Urghan, which means Corsair and...uh....blue mage I think? It doesn't have any of the modern conveniences so everything is group based without trusts or mercenaries or anything. I think its 2005-6 era.

I'm genuinely surprised there aren't any other goons playing on Nasomi. It's really a ton of fun recreating this era (but with some nice adjustments, like no party exp penalty and more exp for DC/EP mobs). After like a week and a half or so I'm RDM19/BLM13/WHM10. Trying to decide whether I want to level RDM, BLM, or WHM to 30 to get BRD. I'm thinking WHM for the sub but they're less popular than in retail due to powerlevels, and RDM is already 19 so I might just bite the bullet and level it to 30 for BRD despite knowing I'll never be able to get refresh and actually level the class.

Frog Act

More goons should play on Nasomi, the three of us had fun today and we're all still low level. Gonna level BLM to 30 I think cus its fun and needed and then go for BRD.

I'd be happy to fork over the gil for a linkshell if we could get some people together, at the very least it'd be ncie to have a separate chat channel away from GreeterPatrol. They're helpful but, on account of having like half the server population in it, it is full of fuckin idiots.

What do you want to do Hagie? Like you said, the meta is really different, and its also not the same as an actual retail 2005, because nasomi has made some changes of his own. Personally I think if you want to DPS I've heard awesome stuff about MNK and SAM specifically, especially because there aren't a ton of SAM and people love the TP bonuses (I think at least). NIN of course is a tank right now and weirdly BST seems to be more party-acceptable than in retail.

Also there are more 'elite' linkshells that do raid content regularly but I think those are somewhat more exclusive and have requirements. People do all the end game stuff though, apparently there are a large number of players with relic weapons and sets and stuff. Evidently when the server launched they had exp increase books and some end game stuff was bugged so there is a cohort of players from 4 years ago who have like everything on every job on 2 characters.

Frog Act
Feb 10, 2012

Personally I think SAM has the coolest aesthetic of them all with the dope stances and swords and stuff.

Also the community guy for Nasomi is paying people 1k gil / hour to stream Nasomi gameplay, lol, so I made a twitch account and I'm just gonna stream whenever I play now to shore up my money problems

If anyone is bored I will be streaming on twitch as DongQuixote01, I made a twitch account today for this

No, the exp reduction you would suffer during the initial levels is eliminated, so you get full exp from EP/DC mobs. I did WHM/BLM to ten in about two and a half hours. I did RDM to ten without a subjob in maybe 3 or so, and it's easy to do 13-18 in an afternoon

I enjoy the timesink challenges that the size and difficulty of traversing the world in this era provides, and it's really not bad with outpost warps. People also level pretty fast, eight hours would be a few levels even in the 50s I think because people are generally on well geared alts. I'm also generally okay with the gearing difficulty because people will let you group even with poo poo gear and they're very helpful with regards to acquiring it.

Last night a mithra named "Juggerknockers" gave me 40k so I got some gear and I'm gonna save the rest for bard stuff

Also anyone wanna do BCNM 20 sometime soon?

Frog Act
Feb 10, 2012

Honestly the biggest problem with the server is the intense lag that hits populated zones at peak hours and some of the inexplicable bugs.

Go to 2:50 here and we attempt to teleport and end up bugged on the walls of selbina, then try to get in the boat which is bugged, and then everyone gives up because we had spent three horus trying to get an 18 sync party together to kill crabs and then couldn't cus of lag, because there were hundreds of people in Valkurm.

Everyone I've spoken to on Nasomi hates live XI, and they complain it is basically a solo game that requires no time investment (hitting cap in 10 hours, nobody groups ever, small population all at end-game already) and they hate the "easy mode" mechanics. A lot of them are arrogant masochistic shut ins who have a stupid attitude about how their 10+ hour a day investment makes them the only real MMO Enjoyers in the world or something but I do agree with people about the social aspect, it is nice to have plenty of people to group with at all levels. I see more people in their 30s-60s than 75, which is super cool.

I think ultimately the biggest thing going for Nasomi atm is that its experiencing some kind of giant player boom. I saw a post about it in this thread and found it, but evidently at the same time Kotaku published an article or something with Nasomi's information and thats why there are so many new players.

Tbh if I unlock bard and level it some I'll feel accomplished

All I want to do (and have wanted to do since I was 13 and I got FFXI on the day it launched for PS2) was unlock and play the fuckin bard class but I have no idea how I'll manage that with all these unhelpful players. I have 35k gil and I already bought level 1 bard equipment, all I need is an instrument, and I even enjoy the grinding in a group.

I guess I'll try to finish teh run and if I can't make it I'll quit again

There's another server I was considering that has different policies and gives you a couple level 75 jobs / gil / equipment so you can jump right in and do endgame content with them, they have a core group. I'm sorta interested in it cus I've always wanted to explore the world of FFXI without getting owned at every turn.

Its called Nightbrood FFXI

just doesn't seem big enough, like...40 players to Nasomi's 1000

The wyverns are just because for whatever reason, they don't have the actual NMs in game so they replaced them all with wyverns and / or rabbits. Evidently Nightbrood has all of that working, so if anyone gives it a try, post about it here. They said just hop in the discord and ask for the level 75 stuff.

Actually, I've got time, if I wanted to just like explore the poo poo out of Vana'Diel and maybe do some lategame content what three classes at 75 would yall recommend? I always liked WHM, and that was my main class, so I was thinking WHM/BLM/BRD to 75, or maybe WHM/RDM/BRD or WHM/BRD/BST or something equally solo-friendly.

Frog Act
Feb 10, 2012

I saw this was $10 for the ultimate collection as part of return to Vana'Diel, tried to log into my POL account from FFXI launch (its gone), log into my SE account to find that it isn't recoverable because the email is now associated with my SE account, go to support and fill out the form but encounter a bug where no matter what I type into the "PlayOnline ID" box for account recovery and merging, it says there isn't anything in there. So I gave up. Its kinda impressive how aggressively it feels like SE doesn't want anyone to play this anymore, the steam community for it is literally all just confused and angry people trying to make playonline accounts or something and then refunding the game.

I have a level 24 RDM/BLM sitting on the road to Jeuno because nobody would help me get anywhere when I asked and even if I did manage to get to Qufim without dying, a single person hosed the market on Refresh and raised the price to like 2.5m, thus making RDM impossible to play for almost everyone new.

There's another private server I want to try, Nightbrood, but every time I get around to going through the insanely long installation process for FFXI emulated servers I get caught up unable to log in or find the exact right file to change and just give up because I'm stoned and its 2pm and gently caress it

That being said, in theory Nightbrood has about ~75-100 regular players and is the same as Nasomi only with a free level 75 character (two jobs), starting gil, dynamis keys, and free class and level appropriate gear so you can hop right in. Ill try it again later this week because I want to get a 75 RDM and just explore the world I never got to see.

Honestly FFXIV felt charmless and bland to me, and the dungeon system could have been run with NPCs for all the player interaction there was. I only ever got to almost cap in the game and then first expansion, never getting to play at cap for either, though, so I never got to do raids and stuff.

I just love FFXIs model of camp grinding but it's definitely dumb and incompatible with normal adult things

I'm taking RDM to 30 until I can unlock BRD and I'd recommend WHM over it, RDM is much too expensive for its return in terms of skill points in melee/black magic unless you plan on levelling BLM too in which case its better to just level that as a WHM sub. In terms of money its pretty easy to make money on Nasomi, I have ~35k from selling crystals (and from streaming myself playing when Nabutso was giving out 1k/hr for it) and I am not good at making money in MMOs, like so bad I've never paid for an epic mount and always got free flasks from my guild bad, so I wouldn't worry.

Got tired of waiting and made my own party in Qufim with linkshell members and got from 23-26 in about 2 1/2 hours. Most groups have a powerleveler or high level backup to heal and peel off aggro so stuff goes pretty smoothly, it's enjoyable. Getting BRD unlocked should be pretty doable

How long did it take you to get bard / how much help did you need for the job quest?

Been playing off and on but I need to buy a Stone scroll (or just remake I guess) since I started with Thief but now leveling BLM so I can get to Bard level.

I'd say it took me about 40 hours total to get to BRD 12 including all my jobs (RDM 30, BLM 14, WHM 12) and a lot of waiting for parties and loving around. The BRD quest is insanely easy if you have the chocobo license to run from Jeuno to Valk in ~15-20 mins instead of 45 and you get lucky enough to take a boat ride without anything spawning and aggroing you. Barring a fuckup on the boat it can be soloed easily at level 30. You just have to go to a place right outside Mhaura and another spot on Valkurm's hidden beach and click on a spot on the ground.

If I were you I'd level WHM, WAR, or RDM to BRD. WHM because its a decent support class as BRD, RDM because its good for lots of skills, and WAR counterintuitively because NIN is the best subjob for BRD in general and it is best leveled with /WAR. If I were starting over I'd probably make a Hume Warrior to go to 30, get BRD and NIN and level them both.
