When players get themselves ejected from the match, you can discipline them. In this case, as it was Duchamps first ejection and was for two yellow cards as opposed to a straight red, I give him a warning. If it happens again I'm fining him a weeks salary. Players will generally learn from discipline, but if you are too harsh they'll feel mistreated and if you're too lenient they'll continue to rack up yellow and red cards. They may also react badly if they have a low “professionalism” hidden stat, in which case unless they're great you might be better off ridding the team of them as there's no cure for being a fuckwit.

Oh man, this can be so frustrating. It's been a while since I played FM, (think it was the last version that used the 2D match engine) but I'll never forget this guy. Over the years I had lead lowly Morecambe into the Premier League, and after a couple of seasons developed the team enough I scraped fourth and thus qualified for the champions league. In the close season my scouts found this god of a defender in Mexico. Still quite young, and the best stats I've ever seen. Like a souped up Rio Ferdinand in his prime. (Who was back then the gold standard for FM defenders.) 17-20 in all important defensive and mental stats (positioning, tackling, teamwork and what have you) Physically imposing with 20 in both strength and jumping, could play a bit too with a passing of 18 (low creativity though, but that's okay in defence) and to top it all of he had 20 in pace and accelaration too.

On his own he transformed me to title favorites: totally dominated all opposition attackers, allowed me to play an unbelievably high line since he'd just catch up to anyone breaking through and stop them with an inch-perfect tackle, (or just muscle them off the ball) it was glorious. For most of the season. then in the space of a couple of weeks he got sent of in the first few minutes of the FA cup semi-final, the final of the Champions League, and the final day title-decider against our straight rivals. Reacted badly to my reprimand, and never got to that level again. Got rid of him 2 seasons later. (And should have done so earlier, he kept costing me with silly mistakes and even more red cards. But I knew how good he could be, so kept giving him chances I shouldn't have.)

quote:

Another loss, and now we're out of both cup competitions. This one was especially frustrating as we had more chances than Ebbsfleet and simply couldn't convert them, and we were playing our best lineup besides. Still, the thing that really matters this year is winning promotion. We remain on pace to do that, and if we have to lose games it's best that they're in the cup competitions when we need every last point we can get in the league.
You're lucky enough to have the money to not care, but when I played lower leagues I used to prioritise the cup games. A single "lucky" draw away against a Premier League side, or one of the bigger Championship ones could bring in more money than you otherwise earned in an entire year.

In the versions I've played (Which should be... from around 2000 when it still was Championship manager till maybe 2008?) England and English players were generally overrated and would consistently do well in major tournaments.

As for the real draw, I'm quite happy with the draw Belgium's gotten. If we can't qualify from that group, we won't have any right to complain about anything else.

I went hiking in Wales last easter holidays. North Wales even, so not too far from our current location. The combination of Wales and early spring had us very, very prepared for a sodden week, but we didn't see a single cloud al week.

Of course, it was also loving freezing*, apparently Wales had the worst winter in 50 years last march rather than in actual winter, a horrible wind was continually blowing in Siberian air from the east, and the snow was still everywhere. (Well, once you got to a height of 400 meters or so. Which amounts to it being everywhere.) Apparently several people died in the week we were over there due to trying to go where they really shouldn't without specialised equipment and/or without knowing what they were doing. It was... an experience.

Which leads me to believe the pitch will be perfectly fine till March 10th. Then it will snow a couple of meters and be unplayable till early april, and destroyed afterwards.

Yep, I would guess that's the general sentiment.

I find it hard to judge their final potential though. Do they have enough of a fan base to bring their budget back up to sustainability and get rid of the transfer embargo? Can we expect to see them in the premier league down the road? The Championship? Or will the transfer embargo limit them to whichever level their current squad is capable of reaching?

Any chance of an up to date screenshot of Di Martino? If the first update is any indication he's gonna be seriously involved this season, and I have no idea what he's like. Can't even remember when he arrived, but unless I'm blind it's at least 2 years ago.

Seems the matter is settled, but for me the* important question was never asked: Do you have your eyes on a potential replacement? Not some prospect who might come good in some years, but someone who can already deliver right now. Say, in the price range and at the level of Nieddu on the opposite flank.

If you do it might be worth selling for the humungous amounts of money that secures further development in the future. Otherwise keep him and try to secure a new contract. (If he refuses over the summer you might be forced to sell anyway. An extra year of service is most likely not worth the loss of 25+ million. (Especially since, in my experience at least, the insecurity over the future means players running down their contract generally perform at less than their best level.)

*Well, the second important question next to: 'How long does he still have on his contract?' But that was asked already.

A: By the numbers provided to us by the management it looks like our current spending is maintainable but only barely so and we don't have any reserves to fall back on. Moreover, while our odds to make Europe are looking good, reaching the Champions League remains very uncertain even if we strengthen the team, which we very well might fail to do even with extra funds since our coach doesn't seem to have identified any prime additions.

If we increase funding and we stumble along the way - even a minor amount of bad luck with injuries or disrupted squad harmony from new arrivals might leave us out of Europe, and thus deny us the extra income - we risk everything we and our coach worked for: Going into the red would force us to sell prime assets to remain afloat, and while I do have conficence in Scott Brown's ability to develop replacement players over time it would be very difficult to not slump temporarily since we'd be unable to attract ready-made players with the reduced budget available.

And since Scott Brown has already shown he'd consider jumping ship under specific circumstances I wouldn't be surprised such a situation without immediate prospects for european qualification might convince him to look elsewhere for employment.

I do admit this is not the most probable outcome of increasing the budget, but it's not horribly unlikely either and I'd rather not gamble with the future of the club, especially since it looks like we can accomplish our goals without taking those risks.

They got themselves a manager who cracks under the immense pressure of actually being called a good coach, apparently. That really can't be a good sign.

It's massively unlikely to actually come to anything due to ManU's two games in hand, but: 2 points from the top with 4 games to go! I'd put that down as the definition of "Challenging for the title." Excellent work coach. (Now don't go and crack under the pressure of my extravagant praise, please?)

I have my doubts about the wonderkid striker. He certainly does have some nice stats as advertised in the update, but for a fast, nippy striker he sure lacks dribbling skill. As he is now I see him becoming great in a counter-attacking and/or two-striker system at a slightly lower level, but for a team aspiring to the very top level he needs to improve whole a lot. Still worth a gamble - at worst he can be sold on with a nice profit - and always happy to be proved wrong about him.

The others look greath though. (Simply great, or great-for-a-cheap-backup or great-for-someone-who-can-still-improve-a-lot.) I especially like Suslov, mediocre crossing is probably the only thing holding him back from being a world-class full back.

That would be me.

I'd been meaning to comment on that for the past several updates. When I saw his stats the only thing I could think was how he was the most underwhelming wonderkid I'd ever seen in the game. He sure proved me wrong didn't he? :)

I'll go with

A: Brazil, Croatia
B: Spain, Chile
C: Colombia, Japan
D: Italy, England
E: France, Switzerland
F: Argentina, Nigeria
G: Germany, Portugal
H: BELGIUM/BELGIË/BELGIQUE/BELGIEN, Russia

First knockout round:

Brazil beats Chile
England beats Colombia
France beats Nigeria
Germany beats Russia
Spains beats Croatia
Italy beats Japan
Argentina beats Switzerland
Belgium beats Portugal (Hopefully. Won't be easy but it's the minimum for a succesfull tournament in my opinion)

Quarters:

Brazil beats England
France beats Germany
Spain beats Italy
Argentina beats Belgium*

Semi's:

Brazil beats France
Argentina beats Spain

Final:

Argentina beats Brazil

Tiebreaker: Argentina scores an incredible 24 goals on the way to the cup. Aguero, Messi and Higuain are tied three-ways for topscorer with 7 goals each.

* That's the game I've been looking forward to/dreading since the draw. It's the real test of Belgium's credentials. There's a lot of quality in this Belgium team, but there are some flaws too** and while some of the qualifying matches were drat impressive (away to Croatia especilly) we haven't faced a true top nation in a match that mattered for ages so it'll be really intresting to see how strong we really are. And I'm afraid we'll fall short of the very best. (But wait till 2016! We'll see who'll be laughing then!)

All this is mixed up with some slightly divided loyalties since I'm half Argentinian too (my mom's from over there) and while I really consider myself Belgian through and through my real intrest in fooball was born when I was twelve and on holliday with family there at the time Argentina was winning the '91 Copa America. (Breakthrough tournament of a young Batistuta. Ah, the memories...) The whole vibe and emotion thing surrounding football was new to me, and quite a revelation for the young me who until then only really watched football because some school buddies liked it too.

But hey, on the bright side (if this match comes to pass at least) it will leave me with someone to root for when us Belgians are kicked out, right?

Argentina were actually very good in the final, almost completely stopping Germany from playing while creating the best few chances and more this-might-become-dangerous situations by far so they could easily have won it before collapsing from exhaustion. Still, overall it's hard to disagree with you.

Have the Red Bulls always sucked in this universe? Also with Tackleford's performance, I guess Ed Phillips was finally fired.

Better him than Moyes.

Also I've decided to restart FM14 this time starting as megabastards Man City to get an idea for tactics. I have some tactical questions.

1) What is a naturally defensive formation? Right now I'm running a 4-2-3-1 for attacking/possession.
2) For individual training, is it most effective to just train roles instead of specific/stats?

1A) You're Manchester City. If you're being forced to defend you're doing things wrong.
1B) While some formations are more naturally suitable to defense than others, how defensive you play is more dependent on instructions than on formations. That being said, two "classic" defensive formations are:
* 5-3-2 (With the wide defenders in the wing back positions.) This formation is very dependent on having good wing-backs who can contribute both in offense and defense. Without looking ingame I imagine City's starting full backs are quite suited to this role though. The midfield can be configured in various ways, from one DM and 2 CM's for maximum Iron Curtain, through a flat 3, to 2 CM's and 1 AM to get more creativity into your side. This formation was a classic in the 90's and early 00's but fell into disuse since. (before being reinvented in this world cup) This was my go-to formation when fighting the big boys in earlier FM/CM iterations but since CM tries to model current trends in tactical succes it might be less effective in the current versions? (Haven't tried it yet.)
* 4-1-4-1: Two flat banks of four with a DM in between to provide extra protection for your defense. If you give your team and players conservative instructions this formation will prove very difficult to play through, but might leave your striker isolated as well. I'm not very fond of this formation myself, but others are. (Both in real life and in the game) You can turn this into a more "balanced" formation by moving the wide midfielders into the winger positions, thus becomming something of a 4-3-3. (Which I do like, again both in the game and in real life.)

Staying closer to your "basic" 4-2-3-1 formation you can easily make a more defensive variant by dropping the two midfielders back into the DM positions. (If you have midfielders that are comfortable at DM at least. Again, not sure how your players are rated there in-game.) That way you can still muster good offensive threat from you unchanged top 4 while giving some extra protection to your back four. Be careful with player instructions not to pull the team completely appart in two halves though. (By allowing one of the DM's and one or both full backs more leeway to join the attack and maybe encourage one of your wingers to drop deeper. I'm only just starting to experiment to see if the latter is helpful)

Are you acively offering them, or dit you just transfer list them and nothing else? If only the second, you should actively offer them (from the transfer 'tab' on the player profile.

If you have actively offered them and teams that are intrested don't come back with a bid the game will usually tell you why not. Generally either they think the asking price is too high, or they don't believe they can match the players salary demands. If we're talking about the high-salary players of a team like City I can imagine that being the problem. Not many teams in the world are able to match your salaries, and those who can are likely to have as good or better players already.

If you haven't done so already setting your players to 'not needed' will both increase the intrest from other clubs and lower the wage your players demand to leave.

Would you consider it "one thing" to give them a top quality backroom staff?

I'm sure they've been bringing in close to a dozen meh players each year for 2 decades now. Perhaps sugar daddy owner might start clueing in that having a competent scouting team might allow them to find better players, a better manager might help them identify exactly which of those would be most useful to the team, a good director of youth development might help bring along some youngsters in that mix (their facilities are probably top notch already?) a better coaching team will have those players play at the top of their potential and a better manager again might have them get the best possible results out of that quality.

I'm actually quite curious to see if and how quickly this would actually improve them, I'm currently bitching at the sugar-daddy fueled Lommel United of my own game which has the second-highest wage budget of the Belgian first division (next to me) and use it to hand out ridiculous wages to players who might just be good enough to keep the club in the division but no better than that, so I've been wondering about what can break through that behaviour for some time already.
