Dwarves (Dwarfs?) get a +1 to CON and a -1 to DEX.
Otherwise, nice OP.

An Ironman thread sounds fun. I'm feeling the itch to reinstall, so it'll be fun getting my arse handed to me by SCS in a game I haven't played all the way through in a few years!

Planning a small team "Bhaalspawn" run (with a Yoshimo cameo) which I've run through along time ago without it being Ironman. Fully expecting to die to Tarnesh or something equally humiliating.

My most successful Ironman run to date took an Archer all the way to Yaga-Shura's lair in ToB before biting it. Having a PC that avoids the frontline is pretty handy.

Learn how to use spells, basically.

Negative Plane Protection to stop level drain. Chaotic Commands to stop Confusion etc. And get some sort of dispel, breach or similar to counter mages.

So what's a good weapon combo for a clanger? Other than the usual Flail of the ages/Crom Faeyr, is there anything interesting?

Runehammer is a decent swap-out option for the FOA as your main hand. And I prefer the Defender of Easthaven to CF in my off-hand, as permanent physical damage resist is more useful when you can buff your strength with cleric spells if you really need to, but DOE + Armour of Faith + Hardiness makes you the tankiest tank.

As well as the advice in the post above, in order to backstab you also need to be using an appropriate weapon (anything usable by a single-class thief) and standing behind your target.

Can someone explain to me why anyone would use a dagger when they have such low damage? I've been playing IE games for years and never ever used daggers, although I'm no master of D&D rules.

You might be a (thief/)mage after an alternative to staves/slings. Or you might think a particular dagger is nifty. Teh Dagger of Venom in BG1 is crazy good. The Boomerang dagger is situationally useful I guess. There are probably others.

And anyway, the difference between 1d4 and 1d6 is not all that much, especially if you're then adding various modifiers.

e: Also they tend to attack really quickly (speed factor), which is potentially useful for disrupting mages.

There's a lot of things I adore about BG2. I like how it establishes a relationship between CHARNAME, Imoen, Jaheira, Minsc, Khalid and Dynaheir. However, this is also a bit of a flaw. Even with so many characters in BG2, I can't bring myself to break up the canon BG1 group simply because of the circumstances they find themselves in at the start of the game. It'd be pretty rough if, when reaching the surface, CHARNAME kicked them all out and went off by himself. Because of this, my party always tends to be CHARNAME, Minsc, Jaheira, Yoshimo, Aerie and Viconia. Why? Because the first two are old friends who have literally no one else, Yoshimo assists you with breaking out of the dungeon and is generally an honorable and pleasant individual (and the Geas subplot), Aerie is one of the first people you probably meet and, y'know, can't really stay in that circus her whole life (and Minsc takes her as his new witch) and Viconia obviously travelled with the group at some point given how Jaheira refers to her. Yoshimo, eventually, gets swapped out for Imoen.

This, but Haer'Dalis instead of Viconia because of his interactions with Aerie. Viconia can burn.

One of my favourite BG runs was with an uncapped duo of Imoen and a Ranger/Cleric PC. Then we raised the poor sucker from the dead in ToB to help us take down our other power-hungry siblings. A beautiful family experience!

It does make some early fights in BG1 a frustrating pain in the rear end though, good luck taking down the Ogre Mage at Firewine Bridge without Remove Magic/Detect Illusion etc which you probably won't have learned/definitely won't have memorised at the point most people get there.

I tihnk it does a good job in emphasising the "stick to the path and you'll probably be fine, go wandering and you could be in over your head" message. Firewine is very much an optional area, and not one I tend to rush to. Usually the first "wilderness" areas to hit are the ones in the south-west of the map. Once you've done those and the Nashkel Mines your party starts feeling a bit more resilient.

Ogre Mages *should* gently caress you up if you're low level. Not every fight needs to be winnable by a party of low-level idiots. That was true in the base game and SCS just reinforces it.

Sanctuary is quite useful for backstabbing and the running away. DUHM and other cleric buffs are also good for mega backstabs. I guess you could use the Cleric Find Traps spell as well if you want to save thief points. It's not the most obvious synergy, but there is some useful crossover I guess.

Fighter/Cleric and Thief/Mage is definitely a better power duo than Fighter/Mage and Cleric/Thief, though.

As far as canon goes, it seems clear to me that the canon BG2 group is Charname, Minsc, Jaheira, Aerie, Viconia and Yoshimo. Yoshimo is replaced by Imoen during Spellhold. Otherwise, Yoshimo literally just falls over dead in the Copper Coronet for no apparent reason the next time you go back there.

I'd go Haer'Dalis instead of Viconia, for his ties to Aerie and the fact he's not Evil. Also stops the group from being quite so heavy on divine casters.

What exactly are you struggling with?

If you're planning on dropping Nalia, who are you going to replace her with? You could do with an extra front-liner probably (I'd have Jaheira up there too) so there are a few decent candidates out there. Aerie will probably tell you to go back and chat to Quayle soon enough (or you can just head to the Five Flagons in the Bridge district and bypass the hint) which will lead you to my preferred choice to round out the party, a front-liner with a magical twist. Alternatively, head to the Temple district to meet a character who'll make enemy mages cry.
