Toady has gotten help with things before and I'm sure he will again. He's focused on features rather than smoothing over rough spots in gameplay and UI, and I don't think there's much on this planet that can dissuade him.

My understanding is that dwarves have desires beyond "be in a cool tavern" now, and varied entertainments and learning stuff (and worshiping at temples) is part of that.

I guess the proper DF way would be to track every component in every workshop individually, so you’ll be unable to build even a basic carpentry workshop without first having a hammer, a metal saw, a hand plane, a metal chisel, a footstool and a workbench.

Toady’s talked a bit about how to abstract soke of this in fortress mode and make it more granular in adventure mode while still being approachable, haha. At a certain level you shouldn’t have to know real life carpentry to make a chair in the game- but the game tends towards Omni Simulation.

Where was this rage when Sankis, A Famous DF celebrity, was prostituting their talents as a DF coach.

Zesty, I appreciate your accusation but consider with me what is more likely: I’m cynically trying to drive traffic to Toady by whipping goons into a frenzy about a game they already love, or that I, also a goon and prone to goonishness, am excitedly shitposting about the DF related things I have a part in.

I think we can agree that Sankis should gently caress off though

Has there been any confirmation if the Steam version will have a "classic ASCII" graphic mode? Like I imagine once I try the new graphic set I won't wanna go back but there is something mesmerizing about the ASCII tiles that I hope it's preserved and can still be used on Steam.

I got you, friend

From DF Talk #23:

quote:

Capntastic: Well I'll be the contrarian, I'll ask the question the question only I care about, will the Steam release have an ASCII option?
Toady: So I think that the thing is that Steam likes to have parity. If you have something somewhere else they want to have it available for their fans too. Or their player base, or customers, whatever you call them these days, it's very complicated learning a new word. So there's going to be, at the very least ... you know how you can pull up a branch or whatever, like experimental branches or other branches when you right click, and go to betas or manage whatever properties or things. There will at the very least be this sort of classic ASCII version over there to play, if you have the game in your Steam library then you'll be able to do that. In terms of like plug-and-play, like click-click-click-click between... Like ... I haven't tried it on Jupiter Hell. I remember that's something that was very important to ChaosForge, to make sure it was like an ASCII roguelike no matter how smooth the graphics were, right.
Capntastic: That's something I have always appreciated.
