When I last logged in DOffs were a new thing and I was a Rear Admiral. Will probably start fresh from scratch this time around with a new character. What can I expect?

Roll a romulan tac if you're makng a new character. The Romulan eps are really good and a rom tac is the best race/class combo. If you really want a fed or klank that's fine as well. They've both had an overhaul of their episodes as well so there's fun to be had there as well. As for what to expect once you're done leveling: STO is a decent f2p MMO that really doesn't gently caress you over for not having a sub at all.

The space combat is still the main draw since the ground is just generic MMO with phasers. They've got some fun ground content now at least even if the mechanics are nothing special.

Here's a fleet D'dex build that you can work towards. You're going to need technicians to make it work. Three greens will be enough to run it but you'll want to hit up B'tran for the free purple techs. You only need two purples with two copies of aux2bat. You're also going to want a blue or purple quality debuff cleanse warp core eng. Lastly you need the Voth tractor beam officer that turns the push on tractor beam repulsors into a pull and however many photonic aftershock doffs you can fit. If you have two purple techs and the 6th active space slot from the spire you can get three.

You fly it like an aux2bat cruiser with a nifty gimmick. The gimmick is you can vacuum up poo poo with TBR and photonic shockwave the poo poo out of it. You're also using tetryon weapons so the T5 Nukara rep power will have a big boost to damage, so feel free to pop it in between TBR and PSW for a shitload of extra damage. If you really hate tetryon you don't need it but it's super nice on this build and cheap as poo poo on the exchange.

Yeah the assault cruiser or the the Avenger make great DPS beam boats. They're cruisers not escorts though. If you want something with more zip you should start grinding out the Risian corvette once the event starts on Thursday, that's the escort you have to run with beams because you go too fast to keep things in your front arc. It's also looks fabulous.

I suppose the reason trying to turn escorts into beam boats do not work so well is due to having less weapon slots overall?

It's more that you can usually get better DPS out of DHCs + turrets. So if you're doing to do it you want something that can zip around fast enough to make the DHC's impractical.

Does anyone ever use single cannons for anything?

Single cannons are useful for shuttles with built in CRF and for cannon cruisers. The cannon cruiser relies on DEM to not be terrible so you need a ship that is eng heavy enough to fit DEM and tac heavy enough for CRF and APO. Works nicely on a scim. You won't get the raw damage of a DHC escort or a FaW cruiser but an alarming amount of your damage will bypass shields so it's a fun pvp build for ganking escorts and sci ships. It's hilarious watching them pop with 100% shields. You'll waqnt to ignore poo poo like recluses though, you're probably not going to be able to kill them.

For PVE it's not optimal but it's good enough to carry pubbies through just about any non-NWS PVE.

There is a repeatable mission under your available mission list called "Investigate Officer Reports" which gives 960 dil for running a qualifying foundry mission. You also get 1440 bonus dil every 20 hours for running a "spotlight" mission.

Thanks for the kind words as well as all the help proofreading the mission.

It's really helpful since the text editing in the foundry is frequently a pain to proofread. I mean look at this poo poo:

For the record most of the non-security personnel in the market shootout are set to timid and you are in no way required to murder them. If you're not super careful about your shooting the vast majority of them will die in the crossfire. The idea of a big market shootout with innocents caught in the crossfire was the core idea that the mission is built around. I specifically designed the puzzle as a way to force the player talk to them and get to know them a little before the impending massacre.

The fused gun is a pain and ultimately they're just fairly expensive decent science ships. The KDF and Rom versions are interesting mostly because of the dearth of science options for those factions. They're not terrible they're just not that great and having a $100 pack attached really doesn't help the impression. Yeah but because of the way damage gets calculated you get almost no extra damage from [dmg] mods. It only adds 10% of your base damage so thats +10% of the damage you get out of a common mk I gun without tac consoles or skill points in weapons.

[acc]x2 [ctd] is a pretty affordable combo and is really good if you mostly PVE and don't want to swap guns everytime you PVP. Or just get romulan plasma with [acc]x2 for all purpose or [crtd]x2 for PVE stomping.

Yeah the two main combos are: assimilated 2-piece + Dyson shield or Omega 2-piece + resilient elite fleet shield (ResB).

The Omega setup gives you tetryon glider for extra shield damage and the assimilated gives you a fuckload of built in hull and shield regen which either lets you survive anything or be less defensive in your boff powers without dying.

The undine stuff is okay and gives you some fun click powers but I don't think it's as good as the omega or assimilated combo so don't bother with it until you've got dil to burn on trying out new gimmicks.
