There was no advice dealing with what I saw (makes it past launcher, cryptic cylon bar, STO splash but dies at character selection). Even better, even know Im a gold customer, there is apparently a waiting period for posting to the support forum, loving stupid.

FYI, for me the fix was as follows:

1. Launch launcher
2. Options -> Safe Mode
3. Once in game, select Esc, Settings (or whatever the screen is to adjust options)
4. Switch to windowed mode, and select DX9 instead of auto

I also upgraded the graphics drivers for the PC and still occasionally get video driver crashes, but the game runs on the slow PC and looks like Im running it in CGI mode.

If it looks really blocky it might be stuck on half resolution mode. Type /renderscale 1 in the chat.

No way to tell what the baseline stats are for the Shields and Engines. I would assume that the cap on the shield will be much higher because it's a Covariant, but the +resists are the armor type; so it will count for hull, not shields.

The Engines may be slow for Hyper-Impulse, but the defense bonus looks good for speedtank ships that don't need the inertia bonus from the Counter Command Engines.

The Deflector is nothing special in my eyes.

From what I recall, the set will be Bind to Account, and if old versions get bumped up to be BoA along with the upgrade... The set will be really good for alts when they hit 50.

If it is BoA, that will most likely speed things up a lot since you can use alts for other Schools.

Info about the new Research & Development Material Packs

http://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star-trek-online/news/detail/6003413-research-%26-development-material-packs

quote:

Gathering very rare materials presents additional challenges beyond just completing an Elite queue. Because these materials are hard to come by, we wanted to make sure that if you were rewarded with very rare materials that you'd know which specific material you'd be getting. This means that each queue, based upon where it takes place (ground or space) and a few other factors will only reward one type of very rare material. For instance, playing an elite space STF against the Borg, like Khitomer Vortex, will reward Trellium-K from all Advanced packs earned while playing that queue. Likewise, playing an elite ground queue against the Undine such as Undine Infiltration will reward Dentarium from all Advanced packs earned while playing that queue. To help players keep track of what potential very rare material can be obtained from a given Advanced pack, that very rare material will be listed parenthetically in the name of the pack (e.g. Advanced Queue R&D Material Reward Package (Trellium-K)).

That's kind of annoying, like in the old days you had a large chance of getting Shields from KSE meant you'd be stuck with a lot them and not so many Deflectors or Engines unless you ran the other STFs. So again, if you grind one thing you'll only get one type of Material consistently.

It's interesting, does seem a little week but the constant firing makes up for it. I like it, and could see it being very useful in the Voth Battlezone. I've only used it in a couple episodes so far.

I love that I still find cool things in this game after playing it for a couple years now.

Most will tell you to go Romulan Tac, but a KDF Tac is fine and the Klanks have been fleshed out enough to be a real faction. You'll get lots of contra to help build yourself up and some nice gimmicks if you want them. They also tend to focus more on PVP and since you said you were interested you'll have a leg up with teams. That said, they tend to get neglected by the developers and haven't seen much love since the Romulans entered into the game.

You shouldn't need another channel invite with a new character.

Basically it replaces the old crafting system with 'projects', which are similar to doff assignments and use doffs as well as the new crafting materials, which can be acquired from the same places as the old ones, in addition to as a reward from STFs. Projects that produce actual gear require both crafting materials and components that are produced by other projects.

The projects give you XP that increases your crafting level, which increases the odds of you successfully completing a given project. You start off with one R&D project slot, which is analogous to an assignment slot, and the more levels you gain the more slots you unlock.

Crafting is divided into 'schools', each of which levels up independently and contains projects relevant to a given type of technology. Each school contains several different types of project which require different doffs. One important aspect is that you can use only the quality of doff that is specified by the project, not a higher-grade one. This means you'll need some white doffs in your roster to do the lower-level projects.

Great, thanks!

And crap, I don't think my main has any more common doffs left... off to the academy for more fodder recruits!

I understand some of the changes, but the real problem is it reduced as much functionality as it adds. Like, stocking the job with the 'best' doffs right off so you can quick start is good! Removing the suggestions and forcing you to sort through the whole list if you wanted to use alternate ones is not. And then there's the fact the actual interface wastes so much space... you could probably shrink the space jobs take up in the list by half just by rearranging the icons and cutting white space, without losing any readability.

I just found this...

So it looks like they are aware of some of the problems, but still, you are right it takes so long to set stuff up if you don't want to use "best doffs". The bar chart is confusing, the pie chart makes more sense when dealing with something that totals a whole. And the flavor text is basically hidden unless you go looking for it. Small issue, but I liked seeing at a glance why my guys hosed up delivering a barrel of fresh Gak. Also, pop up windows are so 1990's.

I like having the Bridge Officer doff missions on the same side bar, that's nice I guess.

Also, if you can, focus on getting every Diplomacy mission avaiable (except for Purchase Turret missions or missions that require contraband). Diplomacy is by far the best Commendation to get fully levelled, the rest give little benefit and usually just a title and a handful of Doffs. But make sure you fill up your slots with duty missions every chance you can since they give XP and will help you level

If I'm lacking I might warp to the Dyson Zone collect there -> Go to the Space battlezone collect more -> From there, go to sector space which actually moves you to Tau Dewa Sector and collect even more. It's really just a matter of running through zones collecting maundering missions. The Sensor Analysis change was drat nice though. Maybe they can solve it forever by making the Target Subsystem powers passive buffs a la cruiser commands. :v:

For more recent content though you're probably better off with Widows or Swarmers, yeah.
