Echo Chamber posted:Oliver may be refreshingly more forceful, but let's not overstate the impact of the show. Miss America will still be around for years. Telecom companies still have the upper hand with lobbyists and access to the government. People are still buying snake oil vitamins. And those geckos are dead. Yeah I don't think anyone's saying John Oliver will bring these vile institutions to their knees, it's just cool to get something different and interesting.

No, homeopathy is something that actually does something distilled down to absolutely nothing because it's mixed with so much goddamn water that it is insignificant. The water "remembers", you see. Homeopathy and holistic medicine often get confused, but at least holistic remedies often involve things that are actually things.

I don't know why everyone is so convinced that Oliver won't touch the whole vaccination debate (god why is this a debate). Sure, it's gotten plenty of attention in the media, but surely it could use LWT's long-form approach. I'd be surprised if John didn't talk about it at length eventually.

I kind of want to play that incredibly depressing game. I never got into the whole March Madness thing, but goddamn were most of my friends in high school into it. Now that I'm older and I've heard about the dark side of the NCAA, when they want to talk about their brackets, it's sad as well as boring.

comes along bort posted:The footage they showed looked like regular tape drives. Some of the carts might be old but that's kinda the point- they can store stuff for decades with minimal degradation and not have to worry about format compatibility 20 years in the future. Yeah, at best, migrating to newer tape drives would just consolidate a bunch of tape drives into fewer tape drives. Even then they'd probably still have to hold on to old machines and drives for one awful reason or another, as always happens with migration. The IRS getting their budget slashed so that they may be sacrificed on the altar of dumbass hicks is plenty stupid, I don't know why Oliver had to go after a totally legitimate decision.

John Oliver would accomplish more if they inserted a frame that read "EAT THE RICH" in a massive impact font a couple times an episode. It is nice that he produces easily digestible segments to inform people about important issues but I wouldn't hold my breath about his show ever affecting serious change directly.

And if someone has a right to have a child, do they have a right to have two kids? Ten kids? Biologically impossible for me, but a hundred kids? Just because it's a right doesn't mean it can't be subject to regulation, it just means that you have to be very mindful about how it's regulated. I mean, everything in the Bill of Rights is subject to some stipulation (besides the Third Amendment, but obviously that's not going to come up often). Regardless, I think you're taking this past its logical extreme.

Or maybe it's still too early? That's the thing, to justify themselves they have rationalized threatening to kill and rape women as a natural reaction to the injustices that men have suffered at the hands of the diabolical feminist. John Oliver is not the enemy, he's a prisoner of war with Stockholm Syndrome, or at best a useful idiot for the evil social justice warrior. He won't be victimized because the majority of these MRA types actually see him as a sympathetic victim.
