Okay, so apparently some of the gift cards--miniquests stuff you get from ambassadors--are giving unbound, and sometimes large amounts (50-100L?) That's temporary though.

The 2 hour event is rear end--it means everyone on the server is focused on kidnapping in one zone for two hours, which means the returns are terribad even if you can find a victim. Not to mention it's during guildwars, so gently caress that entirely and with a chainsaw.

Although it's nice that money is always valuable in this game, the "player driven economy" really feels like "look but don't touch"--at least for a long while that's so. Too bad.

You could also run a script to deliver carts, which gives gold points. ChinaGame (our cart runner) always has too many gold points--too bad the stuff is bound.

We only lost one of the 3 wars tonight, and that was mostly due to almost none of Resurrection being on TeamSpeak so they all stood around with their thumbs up their rear end while their base got capped.

I don't think that's really true. I think the major problem was a mismatch in power. It's not like power was distributed evenly to both defenseive teams--not even remotely. I felt like we got the benefit of an alliance and Resurrection kinda got the shaft.

And there was a lot of confusion over the organization and who would go where (split defense at start), and then there was a late change to the plan (all on attack, then split defense), then ANOTHER last second change about two minutes before the war started (flipping who would defend at which base), then yet ANOTHER change 2 minutes into the war (sending some teams back early, but not others), with ongoing talking wiffle-waffle decisionmaking throughout. People grumbled all the way. People in TS were also confused, including myself. From what I was hearing from the Resurrection folks, I suspect they got rolled more because of a difference in power--they all teleported to their base, right?--not a faiwure ... to ... commun'cate.

I felt like quibbling over decisions was part of the problem. Maybe we can have ONE raid leader on any given war night, and rotate the guild from which the leader comes. So one war it's someone from NoTrabbu, then another a Goon, then another a Resurrection, and another an Enigma. Or something--just one person on any given night to make the absolute calls, and not always Leffe. That way there can just be cleaner, faster decisions and one person can take the heat after the fact for executuve decisions that piss people off.

This kidnapping change is a free economics lesson in why deflation is a bad thing.

Eh. Deflation is generally a good sign--I'm with Milton Friedman on that. I'd say, rather, this is an object lesson in how central planning is a bad economic policy.

A ready example--cell phones are much more affordable than say 20 or 30 years ago. That is deflation--prices going down. Ostensible environmental concerns aside a moment--the wider access to cell phones is a good thing, and enriches society.

In the game sense, often in these kind of games certain items get cheaper and easier to get over time. That is deflation--prices going down.

The present situation--this is reducing the supply of money, while some costs are fixed, such as for the minimum taels to jail a person, or the minimum 150 taels to get the weekly martial arts practice bonus. That is central planning. The problem isn't deflation per se--if all costs could deflate, it wouldn't be as big of a deal. But they won't.

If you hate this economy as a red blooded American, that's natural. It's central planning with a pretend free market.

Yesss? The value of a cell phone has not gone down, has it? They're even more valuable now, and more affordable than ever, and absolutely ubiquitous. Of course we live in an inflationary economy generally--I do not think of that as a good thing. My point is that in an actual free market, prices going down is generally a good sign as to the wealth of society. Cell phones are just a handy illustrative example.

We do not have a free market in wushu. We have central planning. And central planning is dumb and infuriating. This is a Soviet economy.

quote:

why buy something today when you could buy it tomorrow for less money?

Because opportunity cost is real, and because you need to eat tomorrow and to drive your car to work today. I'm very familiar with the deflationary spiral argument, but I think it's bunk, except in really extreme corner cases that seem purely theoretical. Deflation in a free market means that $1 (or 1 tael) is consistently gaining in value. We don't have a free market though.

I really really do not understand their pricing scheme. They can't honestly think most people (who aren't spoiled rich kids or morons with more dollars than sense) would drop that amount of money, surely.

$0.03 per tael is a ridiculous price and then wanting 20 ding worth of money for a camel is just :eyepop:

That said, there will be several running around soon I'm sure.

It could be in the design philosophy to induce people to buy things--monkeying with their perceptions. Throw out a large number, $600 (or $12,000). Now that $30 doesn't seem so large--but if you started with $5, that $30 seems like a lot. Folks do that in mediation for settlements all the time. I remember reading science on it and that this strategy measurably affects even the perceptions of otherwise really savvy people who are aware of the effect.

So what is seen is the $600, and you rationally don't buy. You see lots of people not buy. You rationally wonder wtf snail is thinking. What is not seen are the people who are induced to buy a $30 item--or a $30 item instead of a $10 item--who would not have otherwise. That is I think the real power of the sale.

This kind of monkeying with perceptions is the same way that the funny money tael/gold in the game works--it's the casino-chips-notion that people handle tokens representing money less mindfully than actual money. The game is inundated with that type of sleight of hand; the $600 camel is just an extension of that philosophy.

tldr: If everything was just $5, it's possible that people would be more careful with their $5 than if some things were $600 and some things were $5.

The Fourth of July gift was unusually good. Among other things I got 5 intermediate jianghu infos and some teleport tokens. We're also getting credit cards and possession tokens for the sign in events.

NBloc has been pissing off the terrorists, which is nice, to the point that they're getting tokened a fair amount by Rebellion lately. Even Chaos & Tox have been talking up smashing Rebellion, which took me by surprise. It's nice to see them come out for PvP, although they're not super experienced and flub some when they don't have support.

Leffe's thing about selling good poo poo out of the alliance is that in wars, we now hit a wall of Ancient Tai Chi. Leffe felt that this was because we sold out to the terrorists, essentially arming our enemies with the tools of our demise, and it's come back to bite us in the rear end. He's trying to stop that, and has said that if people continue to sell out and he learns of it, they may not be invited to the next level of content, which involves some poo poo on an island with bosses that have drops that will let you level your Jianghu inners or somefuckingthing or other.

We thought for a while Mutou might be selling to the terrorists, but I'm not sure whether its true or whether he even plays much now.

I have no idea what is going on with Resurrection, but it looks like they're collapsing into Lawless. Nick's rl job has picked up a lot, and Prosperity is in NBloc now. Whatever. . . .

Interstellar Owl posted:

How long does it take for a new person to get up in "level" to PvP or be a useful contribution or even remotely enjoy the game?

To be useful--you're useful at the start in defensive guild wars, as you can put out a fire. On guild war attack, as a Royal guard, my spin did about the same damage as anyone else when it came to taking down lions (a necessary part of assaulting a guild base) and I could toss torches like anyone else. Feints to break enemy blocks and CC may not do much damage, but these are very useful to help in a fight--though you'll miss a fair amount due to stats, it's still super helpful and sometimes determinative. Very early on--first week--I was executing ranged feints to break parries and folks appreciated it, though in the chaos of a large fight it's harder to keep on top of things. Support like music is useful at 5th level out of 10, which takes maybe 3 weeks I think; you'll get most of the important stuff by level 7, which takes a bit over a month, I think. As a musician, I get invited to all kinds of content I really have no business being in otherwise; with me playing music, JizzWhizz clears a school instance in under an hour, I think.

On the other hand, I've been playing for 3.5 months and I'm not "peer" level with Haquertal or Akeenai or Jizz etc. I do fine in PvP and have a great time--I feel fine about fighting just about any folks who don't have a silver creature around their portrait. But to be a "peer" with those "shock the world" folks could take 5 or 6 months, give or take depending on your personal trading acumen/dropluck and what school or faction you choose (wanderer's valley or beggars--less time; Royal guard--more time but the ranged feint makes you immediately useful). There are also a couple of skills that are difficult or chancey to acquire but extremely important to high end PvP, such as Flying Horse (swap health and mana) or Turn Weapon Around (gain mana on block).

I personally felt like I had a meaningful PvP role at the getgo; sure, I could be squished if someone really wanted to, but even so I had some helpful ranged skills and music to play and could douse flames and flip strategic points as well as anyone. Not everyone felt the same as I did, mind you. It also depends on whether you find a group of people around your level. I did not, but I had a great time leveling up even so.

If you don't like being an underdog then this isn't going to work for you. If you enjoy being behind the 8-ball, this could be a match.

Quality GM work!

If it's an inside job, selling customer account information or otherwise abusing access to company information, then it is quality GM work--in theft. I imagine someone or someones at Snail are being paid on the side to provide customer information. Corruption, bribery, embezzlement and so on is a widespread problem in China and this would make the most sense to me given the facts. Either bad actors may be covering up individual incidents, or folks may be covering up the scope of the problem out of fear for their jobs or due to direct involvement, or Snail is struggling with the problem internally, or all of these or whatever.

I imagine Snail was smart enough to insulate itself from employee malfeasance by using intermediaries for financial transactions. Leaking credit card information would be a big problem; Snail can't lose our credit card information because Snail doesn't have it. Leaking customer game account information with virtual money is also a problem, but less so by several orders of magnitude.

The Chaos folks weren't crazy to object--if Chaos had invited someone like CMK to a worldboss, I wouldn't be kind about it. Anyhow, because of this dispute, Lumi and Slaps laid into Tox and Chaos generally, some of which was fair, some of which wasn't. We lose the monkey, and people are pretty discouraged.

Turtle spawns. A new raid is formed. Lumi joins late, Mutou starts throwing a fit and demands lead, which he gets. I expected him to just kick Lumi but about 5 seconds before the boss goes down the raid is disbanded. Mutou says blahblah blame who invited Lumidas blahblah. In a PM, Mutou said he'd give the loot to Zov to stream a distribution but he had no reply when I asked whether he mustered the neurons required to take a screenshot of the raid. Shortly after that, a Chaos member tried to reform a raid for loot distribution purposes but I was too steamed to participate. I believe this person felt like what was done was wrong, but, you know.
