This isn't California politics chat per se, but I've ran into a few people here in the bay area and LA that follow this profile: They oppose using gender pronouns, and don't want LGBT topics to be discussed in schools. The fear is that if you tell a kid about what a trans person is, they're going to suddenly want to become trans and you're brainwashing these kids to be LGBT. They may also bring up pedos and how MAPs want to be recognized too, because "where do you draw the line"? All of these arguments are pretty easy to beat - the line is consenting adults. It's not even a line, it's the grand canyon. This is like when people said "oh now they're gonna marry people with dogs". No one is going to suddenly "become gay" or "become trans" because they heard about it. They're only to find out who they already were, which will help them deal with the challenges that come with that and find community. I always find myself lost for words when I encounter these people, because all of this seems so obvious to me, and I'm not sure if they're already lost or if there is something I can say that will persuade them. A lot of what they say feels like talking points as well, like somebody told them this poo poo and then they're just repeating it. Can I have a meaningful argument, and what can I say that could change their mind? Trying to create a society where everybody agrees on everything is impossible, you're always going to have pluralities and competing interests. Societies that stray from these principles generally suck to live in and fall apart easily. I'm not talking about China, I'm talking about Saudi Arabia or North Korea. It's hard to do a society like this well though, because people are not rational and you literally have to engage with every person individually. Trying to give reparations in money to descendants of slaves would be wild. The book the Black Tax explores the cost of slavery and systemic racism on Black Americans, and it estimates that around $50 trillion of labor value was extracted from black people through 200 years of slavery. Perhaps you would say it's absurd to try to even give a dollar value, but it does suggest that the wealth transfer implied by reparations is much more costly and complex than giving me or other people of color a $1000 check and calling it a day. E: in regards to the eminent domain, does that mean that the communities that were bulldozed to build the I-880 and all these other freeways will get restitution? Also, I would hope there's some stimulus for black businesses - access to funds for investment, quotas in the state government to buy from black businesses, anything that can keep more wealth within the black community and give companies a competitive edge. I don't understand how you can have Schiff vs Garvey for two senate seats. What happens when Schiff wins both? Either way, boring matchup. I split on Lee and Porter. vvvv that makes sense. I also suspect the Schiff win is just an issue with poor turnout of as low as 20%. The people that would vote for Lee or Porter didn't show up. There's also no Bernie to excite people to vote. My mom just moved to CA after living in Florida. She was on a healthcare marketplace plan thru the state of Florida. Looking it up online, I see that she has 60 days to apply for a new plan thru the state of California. Given that my mom is old, what's the best plan to pick for her? Is a marketplace plan even a good idea? E: I'm seeing plans on Covered CA for $500-600 with no deductible + 25-30% coinsurance. That's not bad when I compare it to my high-deductible plan.
