I feel bad for small-C conservatives in this state.

I mostly just want the Blue Line to make it all the way to Union Station, so I can ride Pacific Surfliner from SLO to LA, then hop on the Blue Line to Long Beach, without having to ride two stops on the Red/Purple Line, then pay a second fare to get on Blue. (I'm supposed to pay a second fare, right?)

I read somewhere that multiple Blue Line trains start to line up at at-grade crossings during rush hour, so adding trains wouldn't help unless they also separated the rails from the roads.

U.S. Representative Lois Capps won't run for reelection, probably because she'd be blown up with how lovely her last campaign was. She took her opponent's quote, which was, "I do not intend to go to Washington to represent the 24th District to bring back baseball fields. That's not why I am going. I am going to fight for my country, and I happen to come from the 24th District." and put this part in her commercial: "I do not intend to go to Washington to represent the 24th District." Then she claimed it was an honest mistake and her campaign pulled the ad as soon as there were complaints. (It still ran for plenty of time, right before the election.) Anyway, she barely scraped by, so who knows if CA-24 will flip GOP!

San Luis Obispo County is in the same district and generally leans more to the right. So do the 100k people living in Santa Maria. The district borders are actually really well done, in my opinion, because whoever wins might actually have to compromise, once in a while, instead of coasting along forever, like Capps did, after she rode her husband's death straight to D.C. in the special election to replace him (she took his seat). The final vote tally was 103,228 to 95,566, so I guess there's some margin there.

My landlords are switching us from a year-long lease to a month-to-month lease when the current one is up so they can increase the rent to cover any fines that are imposed due to overuse of water. They pay the water bill and we never see it, so we have no idea how close we are to compliance or noncompliance. There also is only one meter, so the downstairs neighbors washing their cars (still!) counts against us.

Apparently not, unless your lease mentions it: http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/legal_guides/lt-2.shtml I'm planning to ask for a year-long lease with a water surcharge clause added, to see if they're putting us on month-to-month for the rent consideration or if maybe they just want us month-to-month so they can kick us out with thirty days' notice. (That'd be a nice notice to get, after eight years of living in my current place!)

Most of that is probably natural seepage. It's a rite of passage for kids who grew up on the Central Coast to come home from the beach and get out the rag and the turpentine for scrubbing the tar of their feet.

Eucalyptus is tough. The trees are obviously non-native and have a disastrous effect on the biodiversity of everything under their crowns, but some stuff has figured out how to use the trees as its habitat. (Migrating Monarchs, especially.) That stuff would be displaced during a clear-cut operation. They definitely leave highly flammable poo poo all over the place and explode when burned, flinging flaming oil all over. I'd be more in favor of a controlled removal process that replaced them with native trees, assuming native trees could even grow naturally in the places that supported the euks. (Ever seen an old picture of basically any Californian town?)

What would happen if Prop 13 suddenly ceased to exist and all property taxes immediately adjusted to be based off of current assessed value? It seems like homeowners would pretty quickly have to leave and landlords would have to raise rents as soon as possible. Would that drive everybody out of the more expensive parts of the state, causing a housing market crash? Would the assessed values then crash and take the higher taxes with them? Would everybody then be able to move back in? Could we skip over the huge adjustment and crash somehow?

All the bicyclists around SLO who blast right through stop signs have the car drivers so nervous that they tend to wave me (on my bike) through stops that I haven't even stopped at yet, screwing up the flow of the intersection and making everybody confused. Bicyclists who refuse to stop at stop signs because of the lost momentum are complete babies. One bicyclist I yelled at for sailing through a stop yelled back, "I'm a biker! The laws don't apply to me!" so I'm all for stepping up enforcement.

My local Haggen had a six-pack of Firestone Union Jack for something ridiculous like $14. The 7-Eleven down the street tops out at $10. A freaking 7-Eleven! Every time I have to go to Haggen (it's in walking distance, so I go there for things like milk or bread), I fill out the customer satisfaction thing and take a poo poo on their prices. The weekly groceries trip now involves driving across town to Vons. Maybe they did it on purpose! Also, they have the new credit card readers with the chips, but nobody knows how they work and nothing happens when I insert my card. But the slot is still lit up, suggesting that you can.
