Are Firefly guitars any good? They look super pretty and at that price seems like it’d at the very least be the equivalent of a pricy wa decoration, so it’d be a bonus if it’s sounds like a not-$200 guitar.

Their Fender copies are all pretty basic but overall good. Easily a match for the low-end Squier stuff at about 2/3 the price. The Prince Madcat Tele copy they do is excellent, at least the one I have. There are fancier Teles, Strats, and Jazzmaster types that I'm not familiar with. Not into the flame tops and binding on Fender-types, the Madcat being an exception. Their Gibson copies match up well against Epiphone, again at a fraction of the price. I have a hollowbody and two of the Les Pauls, and all three have exceeded what I expected for the price.

Biggest issue on them is finish flaws, typically paint issues or rough spots on binding. All of the recent ones I've gotten have had great fretwork and played really well out of the box, which makes up for any of the mild finish issues. The pickups and electronics are also kind of meh, but none of them have been bad enough I wanted to swap them.

Amazon currently has their hollowbodies, but their website has the majority. https://www.guitarsgarden.com

Guitars go out, guitars come in. Hopefully 2023 isn't the year I really screw myself over due to digital payment reporting!

Squier Baritone Custom Telecaster

Hondo H-727EVHT, early 80s and came with the stripes. Matches well with another Hondo I have

Also factory striped. These apparently REALLY pissed of Eddie Van Halen

Hondo Fame Series H-7634, short scale kids/travel guitar from the late 80s. A surprisingly good playing guitar.

Hondo Fame Series H-760, the big sibling to the one above

Firefly FFJALCWT, a clone of the SubZero Rogue VI, which was a clone of the Squier Baritone Jazzmaster.

And I didn't buy this one, it just showed up with one of the other guitars in a separate box from the same seller but no paperwork or anything saying where it should go. Waiting to hear something from them, I have a feeling the cost to pick it up and bring it back to them will be more than they want to pay and I sure as hell won't pay to send it back when it wasn't my screwup.

Dean "Dime from Hell" Baby ML 3/4 size. Not something I would ever buy myself, but it's pretty cool. I've honestly wanted an ML for a long time, but the ones I run across in my price range are the cheap Dimebag Darrell models like this one.

I'll need to find/build the wand, though.

widefault

It's going to end up hanging on the wall, so I'm not real concerned about accuracy or anything. As-is it'll be fine if I don't find something or get that far. This came from ShopGoodwill.com, total cost shipped to me was about $80. Seemed a little spendy until I started looking around, now it seems like a steal.

Playmobil Ecto-1 in original box, about 95% complete and wasn't completely assembled but all the car parts and stickers are there.

Couple more guitars

Hondo H-732, nothing special but the price was good

Magnum Les Paul-ish double cut because I I have the Hondo version in "Antique Sunburst" and really like it, so why not one in black with a flower pot on the headstock?

These were built ~1978-1980 in Korea by Samick, came with Made in USA DiMarzio pickups, and are a lot better instruments than people think.

widefault

Since my last post more guitars, some to sell, some to keep

Mid 80s Korean Samick Strat copy with a very poorly done flag paint job, likely a keeper

90s Lotus Strat copy in black, to fix and sell. I've had like 4 of these so far, they're cheap and actually pretty nice when set up properly.

Early 80s Hondo Flying V, also likely a keeper

Earlyish 80s Harmony Strat copy, has been destickered, new strings, set up, and put up for sale

Firefly Strat copy that has amazing features for ~$200 new shipped to my door, but also weights 9 pounds. Still not sure on this one. It's a hell of a lot of guitar for the money, but that weight is just too much for my back and shoulder.

And a box of miscellaneous music related bits

Bought for the top pickup in the 2nd pic which is a 70s DiMarzio, which is needed for another project guitar.

widefault
Mar 16, 2009
I think I sold a couple things since I last posted? I hope I did because I bought more.

Hondo H-1111, copy of a G&L F-100.

Bought one of these last September with non working electronics, and it is literally cheaper to buy another than pay someone to fix the first one. BUT considering I now own two of the four I can prove exist, it might be worth it. Keepers.

~1979 Hondo HDLP-2WI. Keeper, factory DiMarzio pickups and in excellent shape save some buckle rash on the back.

Brownsville "Thug" because it was $100 at the pawn shop and should be an easy fix and flip for a few bucks profit. Pic doesn't show it but it is a ridiculous "deep" metal flake.

Palmer Deluxe Series, basically a rebranded Hondo. Floyd Rose bridge that doesn't work, but came with black hardware from the factory. Maybe a fix and flip, but I love the necks on these and the matching body and headstock say "keeeep meeeee". It was also under $100 shipped, with another $22 spent to replace the bridge.

And this for the wall because it's actually painted and was ~$20. Nothing but the finest art for me.

Totally get if you don’t want to reveal your secrets, but where do you find stuff like this for so cheap?

Constant checks on ShopGoodwill.com, Guitar Center's used gear section on their website, Reverb, and a few local pawn shops that occasionally have deals. It also helps to have spent too much time learning who made what, what this model is, etc. There's always a chance at a great deal if you know what it is and the seller doesn't.

That said, Shop Goodwill is almost useless now, too many people aware of it. And Guitar Center is a matter of timing, there's a ton of people watching for that deal.

This week was Strat copy week.

Mako HSS Strat, bought for the neck to put on a different Mako

Hondo Deluxe Series 760 RW/R. Rosewood veneer on a solid wood body, matching headstock, rosewood fret board. And it plays and sounds excellent.

Hondo Deluxe Series 760 B/B, black with factory black hardware and pickguard. Dirt and funk included for free!

Hondo Standard Series H-7600 GS, Golden Sunburst

With color matched headstock

Yes, a sunburst headstock.

~1980 Hondo HD910B, D being for the factory DiMarzios, B because it's black. Or was

Stripped and refinished natural, and done well. Bridge replaced, pickup rings replaced, tuners replaced. Possibly needs a new nut, slots are a little deep and also sticky. Plays good otherwise, sounds great. That's now 7 DiMarzio equipped Hondos because I can't stop myself when I see one cheap.

~1981 Hondo HD-999, with the D meaning factory DiMarzio pickups. Sounds great, but is in mediocre shape

1990s/2000s Harmony acoustic. Made in China. Plays amazing, somehow. Cost 1/4 of what I paid for the Hondo

Framed wood block/linoleum print. No idea who it is, when it was made, or who made it, but I liked it so I bought it

A painting of Teddy Roosevelt that is signed and dated on the back. Looking up the artist I found they did a LOT of Star Wars stuff in the same style. I'll stick with Teddy. Also, Bing's Image search was able to find the artists posting of it on Pinterest. Google tried to sell me a picture frame.

Phased Systems D'Mini Explorer, made in Japan in the 80s. Set neck, transparent cherry finish. 16-3/8" scale(Gibson scale capo'd at the 7th fret). Gotoh humbuckers, volume/volume/tone, 3 way mini-toggle, and it's original case.

In need of strings and a setup, maybe a new nut. It just kind of ridiculous.

And next to a normal size Explorer for those not familiar

Sold the tiny Explorer, which paid for two more.

1970s Made in Japan Electra Tele copy that was modded with two '70s Fender Wide Range Humbucker pickups. One of those pickups is worth more than the original guitar. This one is not a keeper, it's nice but selling it will pay for much nicer things.

Late 70s, Early 80s Harmony Marquis P-Bass copy, made in Korea by Samick, a rebadged Hondo H(D)-850. This one stays for now, even though it weighs too much, has a plywood body, and I'm not a bass player.

widefault

Since my last post...

80s or 90s Palmer PH8TTG semi hollow, made in Korea by Samick, sold under Samick and Epiphone brands as well. Bought for about 1/3 of what the other versions sell for.

Squier Bullet Tele from the pawnshop that needed strings and an output jack, but otherwise like new. All fixed, under $100 spent.

1979 Hondo Professional H-1120, made in Japan by Tokai, and basically a rebadged version of the Tokai Hard Puncher just much cheaper. Upgraded bridge and pickups, but has a few issues to fix.

A lot of the guitars go back out the door for a few bucks profit. There's also a bunch of racks and stacked cases. Most of them will never be worth much more than I paid, but they will also likely not be worth less.

The "art" goes on the walls until I'm sick of it or need space for something I like more. Some of that goes to my dad who does the antique mall thing, some will go to friends/family, some will go back to St Vinnies or Goodwill. It helps I live by myself so I can hang Trucker Jesus wherever I want.
