It's always refreshing to click on D&D and see which posters you see post just a little off in other subforums are actually batshit, also Boon posted:Everyone got pretty caught on the whole "life on the line" thing. I'd argue, and if you read my post, that it's a pretty small part of it. It's the time commitment. It's the being away from life that is the real sacrifice. Kit Walker posted:Well, before my current job I was working another one where I earned 9 an hour and spent an average of 3 hours a night sleeping for a year, so I'd say the private sector can be about as lovely as the military in many ways! Gotta admit this Kit Walker guy has us all beat

ZappDash posted:Tbf, sounds like that dude was inches away from being homeless, which most people with a military background in this forum won't likely face. This was a decent colejoke but seriously I wouldn't put 'the wife maxxed out all our credit cards before she threw me out of our apartment in base housing' as really that much dumber than 'I just had to move to NYC to be a hipster when I didn't have any real skills beyond pedalling my legs kinda fast' That's if you count a comfy spot between the Hescos under the starry Afghan sky, or a bed you share with two other people not even 100 feet from a running fission reactor, as 'home'

I started my new job today and it turns out they let people bring in their dogs and let them run around in the cubicles. I got visited by a golden retriever and some tiny little beagle and I saw a border collie running around.

EU is more racist than the US, though, and hilariously so. I'm not really sure if I'd put South America as more or less racist than Europe. Like they're both masters of spotting a drop of mongrel blood in someone's heritage at a glance in a way that Americans haven't bothered with in decades, but at least as an American you can look and say "Well, that guy's French and I guess he's hating on that chick cuz she's part North African or at least Italian or something" while you listed to a Panamanian go on a long crazy rant about some guy who belongs to a different one of their like 62 indigenous tribes but his met the Spaniards six years later than the other one so they're practically still living in trees etc etc and you just come out confused

Booblord Zagats posted:When my brother and his wife got back from Monaco (which I get is not Morocco) his summary was like "It's pretty much what ever luxury hotel in Vegas tries to fool you in to thinking it is, without any of the white trash waiting in massive lines for lovely restaurant seating." Monaco is genuine ridiculous. So many supercars and supermodels. The big casino's huge-rear end lobby is plated in no-poo poo gold, and at least in the '90s they wouldn't let you on the floor in less than a tuxedo. When I was a kid we'd take the train down to ogle the cars and the girls, about the last time we went down there we accidentally bought a Ferrari and had to flip it before the bills came due. 'The town Vegas desperately wishes it was' is pretty spot on.

Ultimate Shrek Fan posted:How the gently caress did you accidentally buy a Ferrari We were at an exotic car auction in Monte Carlo, because that's actually a great way to take a bunch of kids and go look at a stupidly huge selection of supercars all in one place. The bidding started at 150k francs which was like 25 grand American and my grandfather was feeling fruity or something so he bid, and then no one else did, more or less. It ended up being like $30k, If you really care I have a couple pictures of it, it wasn't really a nice car (13ish years old, cloth interior) and he was terrifying driving stick so he flipped it. He was actually looking to pick up a Silver Shadow that ended up going for the same price a little while later so the money thing wasn't really a big deal. The car demand in Monaco is so bizarre that I remember one of the few American cars was like an '85 Monte Carlo SS and I think it went for more than that Ferrari or the Rolls. Dunno if the name had novelty value or what.
