I would say what makes RE4 nice is the variations on reloading the pistols, esp. the Red9 and the Broken Butterfly.

Well, to break up the MGSV-fest; in Undertale you have two characters who will make you NOT despise Comic Sans and Papyrus fonts.

Also, the music is pretty great. And by pretty great I mean outstandingly so.

Yeah, more than any game I've played (and more than most books and films I've seen) Witcher 3 seems to nail being miserable without being grimdark, and happy without glossing over everything that's wrong. It's a very genuine view of the world.

The most obvious comparison is Game of Thrones which it blows out of the water in that regard (disclaimer: I have only seen the show)

IMO, it perfectly reflects the tone of the Witcher books. One of my favourite things about them was the endless respect the author seemed to have for these random, disparate people (the main characters) who dropped everything in the middle of a war to help find a girl that most of them knew nothing about, and who almost all died doing it. Just because they were decent people and that was where their lives led them.

Yeah, for some reason, I actually enjoyed the Witcher books and game stories much, much more than GoT. It doesn't gloss over really lovely stuff, but embraces the supernatural stuff in such a way that isn't nearly so jarring as it is in GoT. I actually started to care for the characters in the Witcher, which is damned more than anything GRRM managed to do.

Whereas the Witcher is Eastern European as gently caress in all the right ways :allears: I don't really know much about Poland, but Witcher feels exactly like my imaginary version of it.

GoT feels like Tarantino trying to write a medieval history.

In the newest DLC for the Witcher 3 has a reference to the oldest novel recorded in the opening: The opening scene has a knight charging at a windmill. But it actually turns out to be giant just behind it.

By the way, I get that Witchers are infertile due to the bizarre experiments that make them such badasses, that's obvious. But why Sorceresses? What is it about their magic that makes them infertile, or is it just because of the overabundance of magic 'irradiating' them?

If I remember correctly it was a self-imposed sterility imposed by the original founders to prevent any sorceresses trying to establish a royal lineage and thus consolidate too much power.

Metro 2033 was the same, and the rotary semi-automatic shotgun was even better because if it was completely empty, you couldn't fully load it because the breach directly opposite to the one in the firing chamber was sealed off. Really gave the gun a slap-dash feel.

Something I noticed wasn't mentioned in the LP; so here it is.

In Shovel Knight, you have a duck button, but it lowers your character by exactly one pixel and is essentially a joke button - I think it's a reference to a MegaMan game?

Anyway, the last stage of the last boss summons energy balls that traverse the stage in a horizontal parabola, and are incredibly hard to jump around/dodge.

Unless you go on a low platform directly below them and duck. You're JUST short enough to do that.

Yeah, but did you notice Wonder Black, the gamer, presses the button the fastest while Wonder Yellow, the oldest (and thus not up with gaming techniques) presses it the slowest?

Way more satisfying to take people on in hand-to-hand combat for bar disputes/drunkenness/name calling. Lotta games let you pull out your guns and vaporize people with the pull of the trigger if you voluntarily choose the combat option. But its fun to knock some dude on his rear end fair and square and end the conflict without painting taverns red.

At the same time, kinda removes the premise of the Witchers being bioengineered super soldiers if they can be knocked flat on their arse by some random wino.

One thing about Spec Ops: The Line I remember thinking was interesting was that when they tried to put in actual choices, i.e. earlier designs allowed you to go back home with the intel re. survivors or you could choose not to use W.P., players inevitably went for the more 'moral' choice.

This is why the game was a good experiment, but Undertale did it better.

After seeing an L.P. of it, I got round to playing Prey. Going through the tutorial which teaches you basic movement/interaction has your character being observed by a bunch of scientists who become perplexed over the things you do to move around the chambers.

Because you were supposed to have had more installed that would give you the later telekinetic/telepathic powers. They expected you to use them in the tests.

I always love when games are secretly genius in a way that you don't figure out until late game, like Driver: San Francisco -

it starts off as an excuse to have the main character in a coma jumping from car to car in a fluid way, but eventually real tension gets added when you realise that Jericho can do the same thing. Then it starts doing really clever things with the body swap mechanic, like when you possess Jericho towards the end and his girlfriend asks you "If you're here... where's Jericho? :smug:" and you suddenly have to catch up to your own possessed body before Jericho drives it off a cliff, completely turning the tables on the player. Also Jericho's constant phrasing "Wake up Tanner!" which is an obvious taunt based on the coma, but takes Tanner awhile to realise what's really going on -
this version of Jericho is his own subconscious, taunting him to correct his misconceptions
. Why would Jericho be stealing ingredients for a chemical weapon, he's a thief, not a killer! It's not his style" "Wake up, Tanner! Of course it's not really me!" and the lack of consistency in his and Jericho's conditions Wake up Tanner! None of this makes sense!" It's all his subconscious trying to get him to figure out 2 points - 1) the chemical weapon is a decoy, a literal smokescreen and 2) he needs to wake up and stop Jericho as he is the only one who has realised this.

It's surprisingly indepth for a game designed to be arcadey as hell.

And the ending race is a fantastic 'boss battle' because of the character no longer being in the coma, they cannot do anything superhuman.
