Territorians are too busy getting drunk and loving cows to be a real nuisance. Or was being hosed by cows? Not 100% sure but there's some sort of cow loving going on up there. Tasmania is a bit more into incest (How does a Tasmanian know his sister is on her period? His brothers dick tastes funny), Athens is a outer suburb of Melbourne, Sydney is going to be renamed something Chinese, Brisbane has TITS, Perth is being dug up and shipped to Asia, Adelaide is so loving boring the locals kill each other and stuff the bodies into barrels to liven poo poo up and everyone wants Canberra to be nuked by the Kiwis.

quote:

In all seriousness when I visited Australia in 2000 I felt some tension in Sydney. I don't know that it was a huge problem but it sounds like there were a lot of immigrant groups, especially Asian people, that were very insular and didn't really assimilate to Australian culture nor speak English. It felt like that caused a lot of resentment amongst the locals. I got a sense of it just by observation a bit but obviously I was just a visitor so I can't speak like an authority on the matter but there was tension there... Now all that being said I had a really great time and met lots of great people all over. The day I was leaving I had my 18th birthday though

It's gotten a lot better, the late 90's was when the division on the Asian refugees from Vietnam and other places began to have their kids merge into the wider society. So now the second generation is having kids now and the reality is that Sydney is turning very quickly into a true Asian city, I think from what I read last week that the overall Asian background residents is now over 25% and the level of non-english speaking households is now approaching 30% and in many suburbs is now a majority - the process seems to be accelerating as well (That doesn't mean the residents don't speak English tho, most households are bi-ligual).

I rather like it. I think Sydney has improved big time in the last 10 years with the change in demographic - The old stereotypical Westie oval office is dying out and being replaced by Asian influences, I really wont be surprised if Sydney going majority Asian decent happens in the next 10 years.

Why would you think you need to do that? If you've never driven to the limit on a track your first time out is not going to require anything more than your street car in street car trim.

This is outright dangerous advice. At the VERY least, it gives the brakes a drat good service and that is next to mandatory for any track time. Plus stock pads are almost always only good for being quiet and not for consistent hard stops. A MSP3 is a fast car, the stock pads are not up to the task - what are you doing giving such bad advice? You should know better.

quote:

Sorry, you're wrong on this. It's not difficult to make stock brake pads disappear. A Mazdaspeed3 is a lot of car and is fast as hell, when I'm going into a braking zone going 120+ mph, I really don't want to be second guessing whether or not my brakes are on fire. It's a safety item

Absolutly. Now Phone has it right - and as I said, it's good to give the brakes a refresh at any time. If you are using the fact it's track time, then good.

Yes, I'm sure the factory forgot and put base econobox brakes on his MazdaSpeed.

Stop being ridiculous. Really.

If the car passes tech inspection and he knows how to drive it's good to go.

If he doesn't know how to drive he needs an HPDE.

Obviously a properly performed brake service is never going to hurt, but if the car isn't a pit of deferred maintenance it's far from necessary.

But at least it sounds like you had fun being outraged over nothing.

No Mazda comes with pads that cope with track days and I know the MSP3 will run out of brakes fairly quickly on a track as a result. The pads are more designed to work fast in one emergency stop (soft compound) and more bent for quiet operation, rather than hard, constant use. So changing them to something that has more of a performance bent is something you should do.

I know who's being ridiculous and it aint me. Stop giving bad advice, brakes are kinda important and in a turbocharged FWD that hits it's front brakes very hard, doubly so, the stock pads WILL be an issue.

Ok, this is where it gets a little more complicated.

Short "lies to children*" answers:
- Disc brakes are generally cheaper to make nowadays, largely through economies of scale, and use less material. However, if you need a handbrake mechanism in the assembly, a drum brake is cheaper to incorporate this into, hence why you still see rear drums on budget stuff

- Generally, a disc pad doing the same amount of work is going to last longer than a drum shoe (this is what the friction pads in a drum are called). They are generally much thicker, and better cooling helps them last longer.

- A drum can actually have a lot of power. Your braking surface is as far out as it can be from the centre of the axle for a given diameter of fitment, and this leverage really helps. This is especially true if you have twin leading shoes, which is where you design the hydraulics such that the leading edge of both brake shoes is pushed out to the surface when activated, giving more bite.
HOWEVER, braking generates heat, and that heat has trouble escaping a drum brake, meaning they rapidly go over their functional temperature and lose power - a disc brake of the same diameter, though perhaps fractionally less powerful at first, perfect activation, will remain more powerful for a hell of a lot longer.

*This is not intended to be insulting, it's actually something Terry Pratchett mentions in his Science Of Discworld books - in order to explain things plainly and quickly, you have to say things that are maybe not quite true, but will suffice to answer the question at hand.

I just prefer the "Discs are loving awesome, drums are loving pieces of poo poo to be avoided at all costs" explanation.

While it terrible stuff and should have been removed long ago, as long as it remains fairly solid its not a big hassle.

Ummm... "deadly" doesnt work like that. There's a drat sight fewer people exposed to asbestos but it is much more lethal if the fibres get into your lungs and it gets going. Mesothelioma basically is a death sentance, it's just not able to be treated well. The exposure time needed is also much lower than smoking - 1 to 3 months for Asbestos, smoking is many years (And even if you are a 20 year smoker, quit and you can most likely dodge the ill effects. You get exposed to asbestos, you can be just plain A-Class hosed, there is no known safe exposure. The risk of mesothelioma is also linear in relation to your exposure)

This was my stance. There's absolutely no benefit to it. You've already got 2 FWD sport compacts in the lineup along with the SHO, and if you wanted something mid-size (which the Mustang is, let's face it) it would be peanuts to drop, say, the 2.3 EB into the Fusion. There is nothing to gain by making what is essentially Ford's halo car FWD, and plenty to lose from the enthusiast market, which I'd wager makes up a disproportionate percentage of Mustang buyers compared to other models.

And yeah, I knew about and mentioned the Probe; he turned it around and said "see theyve done it before, its only a matter of time before they try it again". I dipped out soon after that.

Pretty much - the current RWD Mustang is an absolute league beyond any FWD for performance. Big FWD for performance and a halo car is just loving insane, the Mustang plate would end right then and there.

In the 80's however, it made some kind of vague sense - the 80's Stang's were loving bad and slow, it was a smaller car so going to a FWD platform wouldn't have been so much of a difference, FWD turbos were actually quicker than the sad poo poo V8's were. You wanted performance? You wouldn't look at a Mustang, a FWD model really would have been a big improvement and frankly the Probe was a good car when it arrived.

80's != 2014 thankfully.
