Scratches was one the the most atmospheric games I've played, especially the scene where the mask moves in the nightmare - I was expecting something horrible to happen, and even though it's basically nothing, it still scared the gently caress out of me.

A horror game I regret playing is Doorways. If you haven't played it, the storyline is something along the lines of you are a detective who can enter people's minds to understand their crimes or something along those lines. It's basically an first person adventure that takes lots of inspiration from Amnesia, but without their skill.

Their idea of a scare is to spawn a crying woman on a bridge that grabs you when you walk past and gets all up in your grill being all angry at you. The bridge isn't wide enough to go around her. What do you do? Just jump on a plank and go around her. Ah, I hear, but what then! She tries her luck at blocking you again a little while later, and you.. do the same as the first time.

Or maybe I'm just too harsh on it and other people might like it, but I wouldn't recommend it.

The puzzle with the statues and spears was a pretty good idea, but really random at times. I'm sure I dashed past ones which caught me on other runs.

The voice actor is Daniel from Amnesia isn't it?

While Scratches keeps getting mentioned I think the biggest change I would change for it is to redo the CG in the ending. There's nothing scarier than being attacked by a Gollum from the Money for Nothing video.

I've recently started playing Betrayer, and while it isn't exactly horror, it does the thing which most horror games struggle with - Making you able to fight, but not making you too powerful or capable. You need to stalk the enemies and take them out stealthily with your bow, one by one, otherwise they all swarm you. There's nothing worse than hearing the DONG from the arrow bouncing off armour and then seeing 6 ghost conquistadors running after you growling like bears, then running out of arrows and having your musket and flintlock being halfway reloaded.

Also it has a really nice art style, with everything being black and white with the interactable things being bright scarlet. Or you can put colour on and the game is just straight up pretty.

Also in the night time it basically turns into Nightime Hyrule Field which is always fun.

You are wrong on that. It wasn't very good with the actual shooting parts, and the squad mechanic was pretty poorly done overall. Especially the anybody can be the Thing part, because Everybody IS the thing pretty much.

So is Among the Sleep any good or is it one of those games where the concept is way cooler than the actual game ends up being?

I would say give it a miss, it's one of those very basic 'walk from point a to b while poo poo happens' type of scary game.

Speaking of that, yesterday I played Neverending Nightmares. On the whole, I preferred Knock Knock as it felt a lot more cryptic and surreal. NN felt more like a flash game, especially when you're looking into the cells in the hospital, and a face walks past WOAH.

I get the point was to feel like you're stuck in a repeating nightmare, but repeating the same environments again and again didn't make me dread walking it in the way they might have thought it would. I did only get one ending though, there's 4 levels that I missed, and usually I'm good for replaying games, but I don't really have a desire to go back to this one.

The cutscenes themselves are creepy as gently caress. The voiceovers have this really slow drawl to them, I'm not sure if it's bad voiceacting or intentional but it makes everything sound dream-like. The scene where the editor is being chased and hides in the cupboard to get grabbed by all the hands gave me legit nightmares as a kid. Only about 6 years later I managed to get a chance to go back to it and complete it, and it was still enough to terrify me.

I can't wait to get around to playing the second soon.

Lakeview Cabin collection updated with level 2! And it is really loving something, and also seems to have randomised elements baked into it this time.

You play as a band who get stuck on the Island, and immediately starts bad and gets worse. Really taking cues from Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and House of 1000 Corpses.

So far I've managed to kill the pig but not without sacrificing one of the band, it seems a lot less puzzle-y at the moment than the first, and more about dealing with a lot of enemies at roughly the same time.

Markplier is best (i.e. not awful) when he's doing those terrible unity horror games, he can have some pretty good insights at time.

But HarshlyCritical still has better constructive insights regardless.

Has there been any of those stupid FNAF4 STORY CRACKED - 5th KID IS PURPLE MAN?! videos made yet?

Lakeview Cabin is strange, and definitely something you need to go in blind to get the full experience. Talking about it in general can spoil some surprises. Not sure if it's worth a purchase at full price (I don't regret it but it's pretty short overall), but it'll probably be on sale at halloween.

I started playing some spookys house of jumpscares again recently, I think they've changed some of the AI around. The Silent Hill monster can walk through walls, the Puppeteer can move if you stare at him too long. I think marshmallow now acts as an AFK deterrent too, now.

Uncanny Valley was a really interesting game with some spooky overtones, would recommend.

I bought Nevermind yesterday at the behest of a stream buddy, has anybody got any experience with it? From the trailer it looks like a walking sim but in dreamscapes, and it has a biofeedback gimmick which could be fun but probably won't be.

So Lakeview Cabin 5, how is everybody puzzling it out? I've manged to:

kill everybody and find the resurrection method fine. In the limbo world, there is a man pointing to a hole in the wall, I haven't figured out how to view it since standing people on other people's heads doesn't count as boosting them up.

Managed to get into the locked house by smashing the pumpkin. There's a section with the sacrifice room, looks like everybody needs to die in different ways: shot by the police, falling off the house, overdose on pills and I can't figure the last one, might be get killed by Happydad? Also it looks like there's an attic but I can't get in there.

The videogame in the hidden room, I can't get the sacrifice to work. I've set the guys on fire and tried to put the baby in the coffin and the river when the moon is full, but the only thing is does is get the spectre all digitised. I'm guessing the ritual is unfinished, but don't know how to finish it.

The TV has the cult symbol on channel one. I broke the antenna by shooting it with the slingshot, and now it doesn't work at all. I guess that was a bad move.

It's so obtuse a puzzle game, I love it.

Rides With Strangers has some kind of contest going. The person who manages to get their audience to raise money on the kick-starter through some kind of referral system gets to have appear in-game as a stranger.

It's a good system to get loads of people to mass fund but it means we are going to get a loving pewdiepie stranger.

On a positive note it means there is a slight chance for a cr1tikal stranger

Someone fill in what this game was because it was a good episode of someone genuinely being shaken by a video game before the illusion shattered like a sheet of ice.

There really needed to be a lot more Jack, he feels so wasted. Should have had him be be weird and creepy at the beginning in a playful manner like he's hazing Ethan, getting jealous of the new father figure a bit slower instead of in one cutscene pretty much, and then throw in a revenge thing after you kill Marg. Not sure how that'd work with the whole Mind Control thing but just more Jack please

That bit was terrifying for me because you wouldn't be able to see whiteface coming. Made such a good OH poo poo I GOTTA MOVE moment even though there is no actual scare there

Also I didn't trust it after I played. I was sure it was still up and running somewhere, ready to just pop whiteface up on the monitor. A great horror, but it's hard to get other people to play it.

So on a different topic that isn't dumb as gently caress, does anyone have any opinions on either Misao or Mad Father? I've never really gotten into horror RPG maker games (mostly because of too many videos popping up on youtube of Ao Oni) but I figure some of them can't be terrible, and I know those are fairly recent 'definitive' editions and most of the more well known ones like Corpse Party I've seen LP's of. So I was a bit curious on those.

Mad Father was pretty disappointing to me, but I can't really describe why. Witch's House and Ib are your best bets for RPGMaker horror games.

Yeah, it's The Park. I think it tied into the series Secret World but I can't remember.

I've always wanted to make a horror game but I'm more an ideas guy. Horror games need tension, and the way to create tension is from adversary, but eventually that wears out and becomes a chore for the player as we all know.

I'd imagine a way to make this work would be to instead of having consequences on the player directly, have the consequences fall onto a different character. Give another character that the player is attached the punishment for the player failing rather than reset the player to a checkpoint. Problem is writing a character the player actually wants to protect.

I'm enjoying World of Horror but it's not as deep as I was expecting, I think. I feel there should be a lot more interplay between mysteries based on what the warning in each game says. I know it's still EA though, so hopefully that gets picked up on

Also the Vigil is my favourite mystery so far, the scenario is pretty drat scary overall even if I stumbled all the way through it, prayed once and forgot to burn the envelope then kicked the old man to death

Worst is the scissor lady. Immediately locked in, not much exploring to do, then you have to fight as soon as you get the candles. Just kind of meh.

Yeah, there just isn't enough actual randomisation in WoH and it's very easy to burn out on.

If I were to make a change to it, it'd be in optional objectives for missions. I'm not playing on hardest difficulties, but in the Mermaid case, the option objective is 'search the beach twice', one of which happens in the mystery itself. There's not much space for actual risk after you've played through a mission once

Theres audio cues to listen out for, but when I played WTTG2 it felt like that barely ever worked. Also half the times I would die would be outside the apartment, where audio cues just dont exist and you can just get shot randomly. It's bad game design to make the player constantly go into the door in the alley for 3 minutes because there isnt any way to tell if the killer is about.
