Corpse Party is just creepy weeaboo guro porn, its not a horror game.

Play Fatal Frame if you actually want Japanese style horror.

Pathologic would be one of the best games of all time if it didn't play like poo poo and have a poo poo English translation because the atmosphere and writing is almost unparalleled when it comes to video games, but this is going to fix all that so you should all back it.

So, anyone know if The Suffering is a good horror game? I kind of like the idea of a horror game taking place in the oppressive setting of a prison but haven't really heard of any besides this one.
As Jimbo referred to, The Suffering is more of an actiony horror like Dead Space but it still is real neat and has some really good atmosphere and more solid writing than you would think. I recommend it, just avoid the sequel, it sucks.

The PC version is also freeware.

The stuff that DS3 does it with its co-op sounds pretty unique in general. Kind of a shame it was wasted on a not so great game.

I think Dead Space's true strength was startling you with a new enemy that was difficult to beat at first, giving you a couple chances to get juuuust good enough at killing one of them, then throwing you into a situation where there's suddenly 4 of them and you're freaking out. It was great stuff.

I think, atmospherically, there's something valuable to the silent protagonist in a horror game. Storytelling wise, it presents a lot of problems, but if you look at something like the Resident Evil remake, there's a clear division between what are gameplay sections and what are story sections (cutscene versus gameplay), and during the gameplay sections, the player's character NEVER speaks, and this is essentially what Dead Space gets wrong by making Isaac a distinct character. There are long stretches where you never hear someone speak unless it's the crazy babblings of a person that gouged out their own eyes, or some ambient, difficult to place speech. This is fantastic for building a sense of dread, but if you suddenly have a character that exclaims "WHAT THE gently caress" or "I wonder what that noise was" it completely undercut's the player's own reaction to whatever element frightened them. Having a second character or a co-op buddy just compounds the problem.

Still, don't get me wrong, I have a great fondness for Dead Space 2, for an action-horror game with greater emphasis on action, it's probably one of the best games you'll play. I just want my action-horror games to err on the side of horror most of the time.
I do like in 2 that Isaac has a sailor mouth because he's just so sick of this poo poo.

To be be honest while RE4 is more actiony I still thought it was tense and scary at times, i.e. I always dreaded the chainsaw enemies and the blind claw dudes. Not to mention the Regnerators. It just usually wasn't a lingering horror.

One thing I liked about Suffering was how subtle it ended up being in some ways like the fact that Torque was never actually turning into a monster, he's just hulking out on adrenaline. The main game never hits you in the face with it, which is a nice surprise in a shooter game. The original scrapped opening totally did though and I'm glad they cut that out and made it a post-game bonus.

It worked well in 2 and would have worked well in Homecoming if they made Alex gay, but yeah I agree its mostly lazy as poo poo callbacks to 2.

Seriously though, Homecoming would have made a lot more sense if Alex was gay instead of being generically crazy.

The boss fight with the Abstract Daddy is also in a room filled with pistons going into holes in the walls.

And really I'd argue that there's still a lot of untapped potential with the series, so I disagree that the series needs to die. Silent Hills seems to be the game that will save it from from Konami's previous bumbling.

You can't make a Thing game an action game though, because you most likely will end up not making The Thing scary because you're going to need to probably have more than one Thing to shoot.

I think the best way would be an adventure game.

*Edit* Though that co-op shooter ideas sounds good without jeopardizing anything that a single-player game would.

Yeah, its one of those games that really needs and deserves a remake, because the gameplay is pretty bad, but everything else about it is great. It won't though, sadly.

On the bright side at least the other game I thought really needed a remake to get the gameplay it deserved, Pathologic, is going to get one now.

Freddy's 2 is no longer horror. Instead, since the first game, the restaurant owners have come into money somehow and now the security office is totally locked down and safe but the power situation is less saved and more diverted. Instead you now assist the robots in capturing (killing) thieves and saboteurs trying to destroy the robots breaking into the restaurant by activating traps and opening/closing doors. The cameras no longer drain power, but the doors and traps use power so you gotta use them wisely. So you gotta do everything via the laptop camera system. If the power goes out of course the security office is no longer locked down and you're at risk from either the robots or the people breaking in
Deception with killer animatronics sounds rad.

Huh, my strategy was to run into the small house right across from the house, because all the enemies had to be funneled through one door. You couldn't do that in Mercenaries because they added a window into the room.

Thing is Silent Hill as a setting is really flexible by definition, its a place born out of the subconscious so you can do anything you want with it really, like 2, 4, Shattered Memories, and Downpour did. Homecoming was just the lazy as hell one that just cribbed everything from the old games without understanding how they worked and what they meant, i.e. the blood and rust Otherworld is Alessa's, Pyramid Head is James' personal demon, etc.

P.T.'s puzzles were intentionally obtuse because it being a Silent Hill game was supposed to be a surprise and they didn't want people finding out immediately (Of course the game press hosed that up for them) so I wouldn't expect Silent Hills to be like that.
