Jesus! I hope they make a version with a heatsink.
It shouldn't need a heatsink; these are designed to go into laptops with zero clearence for one. That being said, it's not too difficult to stick a heatsink on it, if you really want, but needing one in the first place is a serious design flaw (I'm looking at you, 950 Pro!).

Also, of the two upcoming 961 series SSDs, the PM961 is more interesting - it's supposed to be more cost-efficient, at the expense of being slightly slower. These are OEM drives, though, so you get no warranty. There will likely appear a consumer 960 Pro in the future based on the same controller/flash, if you want warranty. Also: there's also a whole slew of upcoming M.2 NVME SSDs coming out "soon", none of these seem to be anywhere near as good as the upcoming Samsung drives (some are nearly-but-not-quite competitive with the previous-gen 950 Pro), but if the price is right, they might be worthwhile anyways. Maybe I'll make an effortpost about them later.

Ok, so here's a list of upcoming NVMe (pcie x4) M.2 SSDs. Mostly from this year's computex, but not necessarily.

I think I've missed a few, could've sworn there were at least 4 Silicon Motion SM2206-based designs. None of them are willing to say what their 4K performance is, so likely it's not good.

Currently, yes. There's a whole slew attempting to play catch-up with the 950 Pro, while Samsung is pre-emptively crushing their dreams with better performance and also lower pricing.

Intel 750 is competitive with the 950 Pro, but sadly, there's no M.2 version.

Couldn't you also have solved this by manually setting the memory timings in your bios, rather than have it read them from the SPD table every bootup?

The 950 Pro is markedly cheaper than the SM961, but the 961 crests ~3200MB/sec. For all intents and purposes, though - they'll feel equally as fast, and load games equally as fast, the 950 Pro is just cheaper. The 961 comes in a 1TB option, though...for an absolutely loving insane price.

Lol no, it's not cheaper. SM961 costs around $280, while 950 Pro is about $40 more (for the 512gb model).
But also, SM961 is actually just unavailable at all, until Samsung steps up their supply game. Maybe mid-August.... If it turns out that I'm wrong about this and there's some shop that has them in stock though, please do let me know - I actually want to buy one.

Edit: it's also faster, though I would expect the eventual 960 Pro to be even faster.

The best you can *not* so easily buy is the Samsung SM961 with an adapter card:

These were originally supposed to show up at the end of July, now it looks like they're delayed until the end of September. Sick paper launch, Samsung.

Just curious whether people bother upgrading SSDs? (Unless it's to get a higher capacity)

I still use an Intel X25-M G2 for my Linux system and it's doing just fine. There's no deterioration on the wear indicator and things still launch instantly. Even low end budget SSDs are "faster" in benchmarks nowadays but has anyone gone from one of these ancient SSDs to a new one on the same machine and actually noticed any real world difference?

I upgraded my X25M G2s to an 850 evo, mostly because shuffling games in and out of my 160gb drive was getting way too annoying. No noticeable difference in performance.
I think most of the improvement comes from getting rid of the seek delay of a spinner, which can sometimes be on the order of 100s of milliseconds.
