The Wii U is good, and, not bad.

Thank you.

As far as I know both of you are just quoting people speculating/making things up.

That said I think it's safe to say that there's no way they showed off a full fourth of the game during the Treehouse. It'll have more than 20 levels.

If the game appeals to you yes it's absolutely worth it. Make sure you know a bit about how it works because there are definitely people who don't like it.

I'm not one of them though and I got 120 hours out of the drat thing which is still the most I've played any video game in my life.

Alright come on in no way is that a good recommendation for someone who "wants to see what the Zelda love is all about".

Literally every other Zelda would be a better first Zelda than that one.

Someone either sell me on or tell me to avoid Steamworld Dig which I just saw featured prominently on the eShop. My kneejerk reaction is to avoid because it mentions "randomly generated levels" and makes me think of Spelunky which I don't care for, but I thought I'd seek more knowledgeable opinions.

Steamworld Dig is like a 3/4 hour game where you dig down, find money and items, go back to the surface and buy upgrades which will let you dig deeper and repeat. It's not really a Metroidvania and it's nothing like Spelunky at all.

It's more fun than I'm making it sound but it's super short and there's not really any replayability unless you want to speed run it or something. It's probably one of the better non-Virtual Console eShop games out there though

katkillad2 posted:

It's nothing like Spelunky, you dig and get resources/items to help you dig longer and more efficiently. There are a few boss fights... I don't think I'm doing the game justice as I really enjoyed it, some people think the game is too short. If I remember right I was around 4-5 hours, but if you just dig straight down you can probably finish it in 2 hours. The 3DS version didn't have much replay value, not sure if they added anything to the Wii U version.

Alright, sounds like it could be fun but probably not what I'm looking for right now if it's that short. Maybe I'll pick it up sometime in the future. Actually if it's on 3DS it would probably be a great airplane game.

You can access the first adventure mode stage as soon as you beat the first story level and then more unlock after you clear that one. I don't know what problem you're having.

Hyrule Warriors is really great. I keep feeling compelled to play adventure mode and replay old story stages to unlock things rather than progress the plot because I want to fool around with all these different weapons.

Use a map to find all the secrets and you rupees will skyrocket. gently caress playing that game the original way.

Also something to note about the arrows is that they're not a kind of ammunition that can drop. You pay the one time fee to gain the ability to turn Rupees into arrows.

Tooie had some cool ideas that were awkwardly executed on. It had massive levels (some of the biggest on the N64, I think, Jetforce Gemini might be bigger) with the idea of having them interconnected, whether it be through the train station or just finding secret entrances. Because the levels were designed in this way, they put in a lot of jiggies that required frequent backtracking, especially with some of the powers. Lots of the backtrack jiggies were also sort of non-content. Like you would get the spring shoes and take 5 seconds to jump up behind a waterfall, or break a rock and give a dinosaur some water and go back to his level to talk to him for the reward, they were really shallow compared to some of the other efforts required.
There was also some stuff that was just straight up badly thought out, like Canary Mary or Jolly Roger's Lagoon. The former being responsible for some of the worst button mashing in any n64 game and the latter being a level almost entirely submerged in water, with plenty of the game's difficult-to-maneuver underwater combat and sub-abilities.

That said, some of the bosses were pretty neat and the more fleshed out mechanics (like splitting up banjo and kazooie, the first person shooting stuff) made traversing some areas interesting.

The main problem with the backtracking was that too few of them were actually puzzles or required any memory or thinking about how the levels connected to each other. A good one was the cavemen who needed hamburgers, as that required you to get an item from an even later level and then figure out how to transport the burgers from Witchyworld to the cavemen without getting them taken from you. Too many of them ended up just being rote busywork and weren't actually satisfying or interesting to figure out.

I still loved both BT and BK when I was a kid, but I haven't played either of them in a very long time.

Skyward Sword is good and fun. If you want a 3D Zelda and haven't played one in a while it will scratch that itch and you'll probably enjoy it.

But man, Hyrule Warriors... I can't believe how much I like this game. I know I'm coming at it from the perspective of someone who's never played a Warriors game, so if you've played and are tired of those you probably won't get as much out of it as I am. But for me it's like nothing I've ever played before and it's incredibly fun. It has some things I wish they'd done better, like a bit overly complex and grindy weapon mechanic and some poorly designed challenges in adventure mode. But the vast majority of the game is so polished and cleverly designed with a truly staggering amount of stuff to do. I think it's really great, and today the size of the game is going to almost double.

Play Hyrule Warriors.

I haven't played DKTF yet, but it's hard to imagine the water levels and underwater controls in there being anywhere near as good as those in Rayman Legends, just because those were so absolutely loving awesome and perfect.

You're correct. Rayman does it a lot better.

Though really TF's problem with water levels has less to do with not having great controls and more to do with having really boring or bad level design. Making an entire level full of samey water levels was a really bad choice.

The game is fantastic aside from that one world however, so it's still a game everyone with a Wii U should play.

I like Rayman Legends more than TF because Rayman is fast and slick and challenging without being frustrating. TF is too grueling in sections, though they're still satisfying once you beat them. Basically, Rayman is the kind of game I might come back to every now and then to play through some of my favorite levels. But I'm never going to play TF again.

You can carry a giant ball and chain, a huge mechanical disc, ten kinds of weapons, fifty huge cartoon bombs, but not one more small gem!

This is an issue of having limited wallets in general, a feature that has been in all of the Zelda games. The older games handled opening chests when your wallet was full by just having you lose the rupees. For Twilight Princess, they decided to solve this problem by not letting you take rupees out if your wallet was full. The thinking behind this was that this way you could always come back if you had a desperate need for rupees (something that could very well happen in TP thanks to the Magic Armor). What they didn't take into account that in the twisted mind of the gamer, having a treasure chest left on the map is more annoying than losing rupees which is why people keep complaining about this in the year 2014.

I haven't actually played LBW yet (I'll get to it at some point, my younger brother owns it and he wanted to finish first) so how does it handle it? I know rupees actually have a use with renting items and all, but don't they become pointless again after you buy the items proper?

You can carry 9999 rupees and there are thousands of rupees worth of worthwhile expenditures in the form of renting, buying, and then upgrading each of your items. Plus there's also a fairy fountain that you can throw rupees in of course. The game throws so many rupees at you that you can easily do all this and then buy a golden bee for 9999 rupees just because.

You can get the golden bee cheaper but well, those rupees weren't gonna spend themselves! :v:
