Is there a reliable supplier for cheap MFI certified lightning cables? My wife has had a bunch of supposedly certified cables from cheap vendors just up and stop working apparently because of this certification not really being there and it's starting to get old.

Why don't we buy screen protectors anyway?

I mean I've never used one and I've not scratched a screen in 10 years of using touchscreen devices but I don't see how they can be bad if you really want to use one.

This is exactly what I believe happened, which is why the more recent messages (<30 days / last 8, whatever) were restored after re-configuring voicemail on the phone. I just didn't realize swapping a SIM card would render the older messages inaccessible. What I can't figure out is whether they were actually removed.

If they were stored by the carrier then why not put the old SIM cards back in, download the messages using the app and then put the new sim back in?

It’s less likely to be Spotify and more likely to be the phone itself being better at processing audio, or at least processing it in a way that you perceive as sounding better, because arguing audio quality is a huge subjective can of worms that nerds can slapfight over until the end of time.

My only remaining issue with apple watches is the battery life is absolute dogshit compared to most any other wearable, so unless you explicitly want it as an extension of all your phones features it’s a pain in the rear end.

I just got an iPhone 13 after a decade of androids. When I'm listening to Spotify on headphones, I get notification sounds over the music, even with silent mode on. On Android, silent mode mutes notification sounds. Is there a way to replicate this behavior on iOS?

My phone lives on silent mode and I never get notifications over my other audio, I just went digging through my settings and I can’t find anything at all that would control this behaviour.

I haven’t set up anything special to make it like that, it just always has been

The only thing that interrupts playback is an incoming call.

Unlistened new episodes sectioned off at the top and everything else below in one list was the perfect UI, who asked for this?

It is pretty lovely that it takes a bunch of extra steps or third party software or intermediate cloud services to just get data from A to B when there’s a cable right there.

As much as there was an awful lot of old man yells at cloud going on throughout that entire thrilling multi-page saga it could definitely be easier if Apple wanted it to be, but they would understandably rather sell you iCloud.

I don’t have anything worth hiding but I still don’t want to keep normalising the idea that we should just stick everything in the cloud where we lose all control of whatever that data may be. That’s the slippery slope that’s already leading us to bulk surveillance and the erosion of privacy and civil liberties that comes with it pretty much all around the world. But that’s a bit too heavy a topic for this, the iPhone thread about iPhones.

I got a new job with a huge pay rise so decided to bite the bullet and buy an Apple Watch, despite my reservations over the listed battery life being 18 hours because lol what kind of bullshit Mickey Mouse batteries are they putting in these things?

It got to 24% after 36 hours and it charged back to 100% in like 45 minutes. Why are Apple doing the exact opposite of every other company that’s ever sold a battery powered device in history and listing some kind of wacky worst case battery life in all their main marketing materials?

I was working retail when chip and PIN became a thing in the UK and we had to ask people if they knew their number, because a lot of people were still expecting to swipe and sign which we wouldn’t accept anymore.

So many people would just go “oh yeah it’s XXXX” and announce it to the entire store in response to being asked if they knew it.

Instead of paying a lump sum for the phone you just pay for it monthly as part of your plan, that’s a pretty normal thing to do.

It’s usually a much shittier deal than you’d get just buying the phone and paying monthly for just the plan, but now that phones cost stupid amounts of money and people always want the fanciest one it works out the ‘only way’ to get the phone you want for a lot of people.

Maybe in the US, here in :britain: it’s cheaper any way you slice it to just buy a handset and get a SIM only plan from wherever. The days of phone companies giving you a bunch of bonus poo poo just for signing a contract with them seem to be long gone.

I have had smaller gadgets, that more or less implied that they needed to be charged via an USB cable inserted into a computer, because the socket gives too much power, or something like that.

Just use the lightning cable you normally use to charge your phone. You won’t need to charge your AirPods anywhere near as often so it can pull double duty.

Do you have an alarm set or did you actually set your wake up time? It may treat them differently?

I’ve tried it both ways. Alarms just silently do nothing, wake up time does the silent tapping on the watch.
