the internet was founded on the principles of easy, anonymous and hard-to-stop sharing of digital information and I wont stand for anyone disrespecting the hard work the early cyber pioneers put into it by advocacy of actually PAYING for movies and music.

it's not like ads don't work, they do, it's just that it all falls under "brand awareness" and "brand lift" and those are some really vague numbers so you really need truly mass market products to make advertising work for you

the entire advertising industry, which drives all media, is built on elaborate lies that everyone knows are lies but that no one can acknowledge because the lie makes it all work. like as soon as someone that people listen to starts to grapple with the incredibly hosed up math of tv ratings, all the networks are hosed, every one of them. it's like that thing back in the 80s where they started looking at actual sales to find out what the top 40 hits were instead of just asking record store owners for ther opinions were and omg it turns out rap and country are HUGE except this is about several orders of magnitude more money

its because it's a quack medicine that doesn't work that preys on people when they are at their weakest and will try anything to cure their sickeness and people were taking advantage of that weakness to make a buck and america said "no, that's gross, lets not allow people to do that."

mishaq posted:what i dont get with the ads on internet video streaming sites is why they are served from a different domain/server than the actual content that allows adblock to block them because of the way the ads are served. CBS.com has mostly no idea what ads its serving and shuffling different ads on and off cbs.com would be a big pain in the butt and would slow down the incredibly high speed ad market. no one cares about Adblock because (1) it's not that common and (2) no one wants to get into an arms race they can't win.
