The car-service company Uber has allegedly terminated more than a dozen Chicago-based community-support representatives, according to internal emails obtained by the Daily Dot.

Four independent sources say that up to 15 people were fired last Friday for sharing an internal discount code for rides. Uber allegedly called it a “breach of policy.”

[...]

Uber uses a third-party human resources firm, ZeroChaos, to manage contractors. Community-support representatives work for Uber through ZeroChaos, meaning they are employed by the company but don’t receive the benefits that come with being a full-fledged Uber staff member.

It was a ZeroChaos representative who sent the Uber contractors their termination notices. The Daily Dot received copies of the emails. Written in Comic Sans, the letters read, “Your assignment at Uber has ended effective immediately 12/5/14. Please log into the system and enter your final timecard.”

a really happy medium would be uber opening their system, only allowing actual livery cars & taxis, and acting solely as a middle-man dispatcher that provides a uniform service country-wide. won't happen though and the only company to step in to do that was successful but decided to poison the well like cocks

most city councils and mayors are pretty practical people and tend toward "OK let's make this work" and hold off on hardcore enforcement while attempting to craft legislation to directly regulate uber and such. the problem they keep running into with uber is that uber is not negotiating in good faith at all and any regulations crafted will be ignored the instant it becomes slightly more profitable to do so. that's when the enforcement wheels start to turn and the city leaders don't want to attack the drivers (who are their constituents) but instead go directly after uber. the problem with that is instead of just writing tickets with instant results the cases have to slowly work their way up through the court system and uber can afford very very good lawyers who can delay things absurd amounts of time while they also attempt to get new laws passed which they will then use to reset the clock before breaking them as well.

eventually there will be rulings saying "jesus loving christ YES uber is a taxi company and has to abide by all the rules or gtfo" but for now investor storytime lives on.

more succinctly: the gov moves slowly and takes a long time to gain inertia on anything. lord help you if you're in the way once they're moving though

Along with California, a dozen states allow non-carpoolers in carpool lanes, either through tolls or by letting solo drivers enter the lane with qualifying clean-air vehicles. California’s program is aimed at reducing emissions by incentivizing the purchase of vehicles that pollute the air less.

But the Federal Highway Administration said Virginia and California are the only states that allow single drivers and have lanes failing to meet federal standards. In Virginia, the slowdowns are occurring on only one freeway: I-66, outside the Beltway, FHWA said.

I-66 is easily the worst road I've ever had to deal with on a regular basis
