Volkerball posted:Let's get real, no government anywhere is going to arrest itself because of the UN. The best we can hope for here is reform and transparency for the future, which isn't unlikely considering that the report really outlines how much of a failure the torture program was. Near useless for information, incompetently run, huge drain of money and effort. It's pretty clearly not the way forward no matter where you stand ideologically. We can still call for justice even if we have no realistic expectation of such. And we already knew torture was useless, that didn't stop us. Consider it a symptom of how out of control the CIA and war machine are.

Volkerball posted:We are holding the policy accountable for what it's side effects and consequences were, instead of just saying hooah, torture owns. The policy is on trial, not the people who were responsible for it. That's still really important. Even more so actually. Throwing someone in prison isn't going to un-waterboard anyone, but we can call for steps to prevent it from happening to others in the future, and now is the time to do that. We already knew torture was ineffective. At best we may stop it for a little until we decide to do it again.

Volkerball posted:Torture being effective or not was divided down partisan lines among the general public. All but the fringe left deemed it a necessary form of information gathering because it worked for Jack Bauer. Yes because propaganda works. It's been known for a very long time that it's not a good way to get information, but the USA government really digs torture for itself and it's allies. That should tell you something.

I don't think that folks should be executed for this, they should be imprisoned. For the rest of their lives. In a non-torturous prison. You have to realize that if you have a stance against the death penalty, and for prison reform, you are arguing on behalf of the bad people as well as the good.

If you thought the CIA was some amazingly competent super-spy-force before this, you haven't been paying attention.

UberJew posted:Also everyone involved with the torture program and everyone who authorized it including President Bush and everyone who protected it including President Obama are war criminals who should be prosecuted by an international court and imprisoned in humane but effective conditions for the rest of their natural lives. And with none of that likely to happen it's funny when folks complain about political apathy.
