EDIT: Okay, nevermind then. Instead, I'll just second Poparena's self-recommendation. Everything he puts out is super well-researched and very funny. He goes one step beyond most other critics and actually tries to get the creators of the various works he spotlights in whatever way he can for added clarity or context if he can get them.

Joe went to Congress in costume? I like the guy for his goofball charm, that's pretty unprofessional. Are members of the public just allowed to go to congress, or do you have to be invited/jump through loads of hoops?

He did an anti-SOPA skit with Spoony on the capitol steps as Corporate Commander. And, yeah, I think it's actually quite easy for members of the public to get in to the capitol building and (try to) have face-to-face meetings with Congressmen/women and Senators. Immigration reform activists and DREAMers routinely pull stunts like sit-ins in or just outside of congressional offices to try and force legislators to meet with them. They're usually just dragged away by Capitol Police, but the point remains.

Though it sounds like Michaud and the Walkers had worked out this meeting with whatever legislators they were there to meet well in advance, so they were expected.

But yeah, if Joe actually went inside the US Capitol building and met with Lamar Alexander dressed like this, then that was incredibly tone deaf on his part. ...Even if Lamar Alexander is a colossal shithead who tables assholish bills like SOPA and doesn't deserve a tinker's drat of respect in 99% of all other circumstances.

It's a bit sad as apparently Lindelof is an extremely nice guy. He's just kind of an average writer and gets onto a lot of big projects without the extra help needed to make a great script.

The sadly ironic part is that Lindelof actually gets called in to scriptdoctor a fair deal of already flagging material; Prometheus, Cowboys & Aliens, Star Trek: Into Darkness, and World War Z being the ones studios have felt comfortable with publicizing. And well true, he has the tallent to lift material out of the mud slightly--all four films are at least watchable, to an extent--he just doesn't have the skill to truly salvage them.

TheMaestroso posted:

Orci and Kurtzman were also writers on that script. I don't think you can reasonably blame that film's problems on Lindelof over those two knuckleheads.

The story wasn't that great, ironically for a game called "The Last Story", but it is 100% the main cast that lifts it into something grand. My only real gripe is that it feels like only half the game it should be, in terms of over all length. Like it was Mistwalker was planning something much more expansive but had to pare back because the Wii just couldn't handle it and because they were making essentially an end-of-system game for it, so they probably didn't have the time to do what they wanted either.

You could probably make the argument that the Joe/Keighley interview ruined Channel Awesome's chances at being taken seriously. They got invited to a press event, and their representive tried to pick a fight with the producer. And spent their entire coverage making GBS threads on the show. And everyone who invited them. It's not even that he was wrong about the VGAs. He just went into the them in character, when that was the last thing CA should have been sending to their first mainstream(ish) event.

That's not even the first time Joe's done something like that either. There was a post in the previous thread quoting a tell-all blog post on what a debacle Michaud and Rob turned the Channel Awesome anti-SOPA/PIPA visit to Congress back in 2011 into behind the scenes, and one of the highlights was how Joe showed up to meetings with congressmen and senators like SOPA author Lamar "I wrote an anti-piracy bill yet steal peoples' copyrighted photos to use on my website without permission" Smith in costume and character as Corporate Commander.

The first two have the bonus of Ed Glazer as a literal asswipe. (no, that's not an insult in context) By the way, if there's an hour and a half of your life you never want back, the whole Space Thunder Kids movie is on youtube.

I remember about a year after I saw the Garzy's Wing review for the first time I stumbled across a clip of Crispin Freeman at some anime con doing some kind of "Terrible Anime Voice Acting 101" panel and the clip he used to start the panel was from Garzy's Wing. So it made me chuckle and go "hey, I know that piece of poo poo!"

I don't know why Sage and Spoony stopped doing their yearly crossovers either, especially because Bennett was one of the few TGWTG people (outside of Brad and Hagan, really) to stick by Noah after Spoonygate. I guess Noah moving to Illinois must have made things more difficult.

Still, Sage has always been spot on with his videos, but if you want to see him at probably his absolute best, watch his Wings of Honnemise and Macross Plus reviews.

I know there's been an ungodly amount written about it and the books it was based on, but I'm still surprised no one's tackled it yet in video format.

Also agreed with you that it's "Aboat," no one says "Aboot" up here. Though, I once talked to this navy captain from Ontario who pronounced Wipeout as "Wipeoot."

I just know it pretty much critically wounded the careers of everyone involved in it who weren't Jeremy Irons, Robert Carlyle, or John Malkovich. Even Rachel Weisz and Djimon Hounsou dropped off the radar for a while for a while after Eragon and they were in it for like five minutes, each.
