US housing is really cheap. Just watch any diy show from the states - people can buy a 4 bedroom house just off sunset boulevard for $450k USD.

These are also the same selfish cunts who are going to demand bailouts in 20 years when Sth Dunedin, Kilbirnie and lower lying areas of Auckland are abandoned due to rising waters.

About a million NZD (800k USD) for a nice 3 bedroom in a middle class suburb

Rotting shacks without electricity literally sell for $1.3million if they're in a desirable innercity suburb.

Minimum wage is ~11USD/hr. Teachers and police earn a little more compared to the US.

Definitely better money in Australia - lower living costs, cheaper housing and much higher wages across the board.

Seems to be run by some nasty ex-NZ(?) lawyer types who are only too happy to breach thorny name-suppression orders, and have recently weighed in on the Matt Bloomfield/Slater brouhaha - makes me wonder if they're being paid to run hit jobs.

And speaking of "evidence both ways," I've wondered if people in the legal profession feel that his retrial a few years ago where he was found "not guilty" was, in fact, a fair trial? I remember feeling sceptical of the possibility at the time due to the amount of literature relating to the Bain case that had been published and the frequent coverage that it got from time to time, not to mention that pretty much everyone had a firm belief in his guilt or innocence.

Martin Van Beynen's account of the second trial is regarded as the best explanation for what happened.

quote:

The verdict surprised me, but should not have. If the case had been put to 10 juries, I believe six would have convicted, two would have acquitted and two would have been unable to reach a decision. Bain won the lottery.

Several aspects about this jury should worry us all.

The two jurors - a man and a woman - who were seen to congratulate Bain after the verdicts and who went to his celebratory party were the same two who spent the last three weeks of the trial paying little attention to the evidence and closing addresses. They giggled and wrote messages to each other.

The man would often sleep through parts of the afternoon.

Initially, the woman was so disturbed by the images shown as evidence that she turned her computer screen away. By her own admission, she spent the first two weeks of the trial in tears, and the trial lost half a day because of her anguish.

Another juror, known to another member of the media covering the trial, had a serious question mark over her ability to follow the evidence. Yet another went to congratulate Bain's legal counsel after the verdict.

Ok so I am gonna put my head on the line here a wee bit, but I feel I need to as this article actually makes me a bit angry.

I love my Maori/Pasifika trans sisters and brothers more than anyone and my track record in supporting them speaks for itself.

These protesters may have a very valid point and I totally agree that trans people are mistreated by the prison system. I know in the past and probably still today they are mistreated by the police. I totally support them in their fight for equality and justice.

However.......this article/press release contains lies.

Myself and a bunch of others were across the road watched the whole thing unfold right before us and we watched it from start to end.

It did not take 25 minutes for medical help to arrive as stated. Yesterday I read a press release form them stating they did not get medical help for 45 minutes (they have obviously changed their story a bit). St Johns was with them withing minutes. I think Paul Rose may have timed it and said it was 11 minutes. To me and others it seemed like about 5 minutes or even less. St Johns were stationed near by.

The young Maori trans woman was not " ... noticeably targeted by security" as they have stated. She was being the most aggressive and fighting back when they tried to move her off the road. In no way at all did it seem like any security was like "lets get her coz she is young Maori and trans". This in my personal opinion is totally playing the racist / transphobia card. The protesters where aggressive and defiant.

From our view which was directly on to the whole incident not once did any of us think/say that unreasonable force was used from a security or police stand point. They had to be moved off the road and they were refusing to move. So they were physically escorted off. If I were in charge of security / police I would have instructed them to do exactly what they did.

Heather Carnegie did not "assault" any of them at any time. She did try to help escort them off the road and she looked like she was a bit pissy that they were sticking an ipad/iphone/camera in her face and filming it so she did grab it and tossed it several meters away. It seemed to me like after they were off the road and settled down she was actually concerned with the wellbeing of the young trans woman and seemed to be checking is she was ok etc.

As I mentioned, I support them in what they are fighting for. I absolutely support peoples right to peaceful protest. I totally acknowledge that transphobia is a huge and serious issue, but I don't support these protesters lying in order to get sympathy.

Perhaps they can engage with the Pride Festival in a more constructive way next year. March in the parade and publicise their message??? Just a thought.

Uncool, “Queers Against Injustice”, uncool. You paint yourselves as such a socially and politically aware group who has some really potent objections to the commercialisation of LGBTQ identities, but you fail to address the fundamental flaws in your act. As a visibly queer person, if I were to walk past any type of LGBTQ themed object, whether it be an ATM or a shopfront or a work of art, and I see it vandalised, that makes me scared. There’s no context, there’s no message, except that this is an act of anger. But since it’s so vague who the anger is addressed to, and why, I then have to continue my walk home in fear that there is potentially someone nearby who has every reason to want to hurt me exactly as they “hurt” this object. If you’re so enlightened, I’m sure there are other ways you could get your point across, and I am surprised and disappointed that you didn’t consider the affect your actions would have on LGBTQ people, especially the young and closeted, who are highly likely to interpret this act as a threat to their own safety. Stop fear mongering, and learn broadcast your opinions in clear and non-intimidating way.

Matty Dentith has written a thing on the pride parade protest. If you're up for a long form piece do read. http://all-embracing.episto.org/2015/02/24/we-are-primed-to-see-a-reflection-on-the-pride-noprideinprisons/

The crux of Dentith's piece is this extract:

quote:

If the Pride Parade is meant to represent the queer community but makes the space unsafe for sections of that community which are still suffering massive marginalisation and oppression from wider society, then not only is the Pride Parade disingenuous but it also files[sic] in the face of its own history.

Which unfortunately for his argument is functionally identical to:

quote:

If a protest is meant to represent the queer community but makes the space unsafe for sections of that community which are still suffering massive marginalisation and oppression from wider society, then not only is the protest disingenuous but it also files[sic] in the face of its own history.

Cunliffe acts the oval office

quote:

Mr Cunliffe was pulled over by police yesterday morning near Plimmerton, north of Wellington, after a complaint by a motorist who said he was driving erratically.

Wellingtonian Darryl Smith said a motorist, who he later identified as the Labour MP, overtook his vehicle on the motorway at the bottom of the Ngauranga Gorge.

"He was swerving between the lanes, absolutely no indication whatsoever, changing lanes, nearly hitting cars," he said.

Asked whether he was driving dangerously, Mr Cunliffe said: "I always indicate if I think I am approximate to traffic. I may have changed lanes, but I do not believe I was driving erratically at any point."

There's a lot of concern trolling regarding how awfully racist it is to prevent dangerous tourists from driving.

I think it's because most urban handwringers don't understand how many tourist drivers there are in some parts of the south is, and how dangerous those roads make them. A majority of road traffic in some places is tourist traffic - Nth Islanders are lucky to encounter more than a handful of tourist vehicles on the Desert Rd.

And there are no traffic cops - there's something like 4 full time frontline staff working between Motueka and Wanaka. Most tourists wont even see a police car on the drive.
