By the way, any of you guys who are paying secondary PAYE on a second job should be applying for your personal income statement from the IRD every year, you will almost certainly be entitled to a refund since the secondary PAYE brackets are pitched quite a bit higher. Ditto goes for those who just have one job but work irregular hours or are paid irregular amounts — you will have had too much PAYE deducted because the pay rate schedule assumes you are earning the same amount every pay period. Everyone should be requesting those statements from the IRD all the time, basically.

I saw her speak here in London at a Luminaries event. She was very good, and obviously very intelligent, but I don't think she'd be great as a politician. She's very meek and quiet, and she prefaces everything with a lot of "...um"s before she talks. Maybe that's something that can be trained out of her, but at the moment she comes across as too bookish, I'd say.

Yeah I'm baffled by Norman's retirement, seeing as he was leading their charge into neoliberal milquetoast Gen Y party, which is what I assume was their electoral strategy. Metiria seems a lot more left-wing on economic stuff and is way more concerned with social issues/inequality than Norman was.

You mean those poor loving gays being targeted by trans-activists.

When a social justice protest is indistinguishable from a homophobic attack it's a loving disgrace.

What? What makes you think they're trans? QAI is a queer movement protesting the commercialisation of queerdom. I don't see how you think pink paint and a letter explaining how commercialisation and appropriation of queer culture is indistinguishable from a homophobic attack. What sort of homophobic attacks do you usually see, dusty?

As above plus scrap secondary employment tax rates.
what do you mean? there are no actual separate tax rates, just higher withholding rates to collect the right amount on your annual income because people with two jobs earn more than people with only one of those jobs

Yea, it's just to stop you underpaying tax because your combined wages might take you into a bracket where you should have paid tax at a higher rate on a part of that income. It's not an additional tax for having a second job.
It's necessary even if your new job isn't pushing you into a new bracket. if you earn between $14k and $48k a year (ie most of the country) then your effective annual rate is somewhere between 10.5% and 17.5%. where exactly on that scale you fit depends on how much you earn, so we withhold more from the second job so you're not taxed as though you pay 10.5% tax and then whacked with a bill for double that at the end of the year.

Why do you have to order every candidate? I thought in STV you can order your top however many, and then the rest are ranked last equally? Is it just to prevent STV from regressing into an FPP system if everyone just puts a "1" and nothing else?

Speaking as a tax lawyer, honestly the 2 year thing doesn't change much. The IRD would definitely assume that a sale of a investment property within 2 years is taxable under the current rules (bought with the intent to resell). This is probably just to make it really obvious so (a) property speculators will include it in their returns so the IRD doesn't waste money investigating them, and (b) IRD doesn't have to go to court against idiotic taxpayers who want to disputes everything.

Two things I don't understand which I suspect is because I'm becoming an Old:

1. Why do you have to have some sort of social media presence? I don't and I'm not really sure why anyone would want to at all, you make it sound like it's somehow unavoidable and you get born with a facebook account or whatever.
Obviously you don't have to, but it's becoming an ever-increasingly important part of socialisation, especially as a kid/teen. A lot of social interaction is through facebook chat/whatsapp/snapchat, and you miss out on a lot of normal friend communications if you're not in those circles. Also, even if it wasn't becoming more central to teen socialisation, people should still have the option to use media they enjoy without being harassed.

quote:

2. Can't you just...not add people? Like, if you don't accept friend requests from cunts, how can those cunts spam you with poo poo?
Well, in the first place, lots of cyber bullying is by people you are friends with, or are in the same class with, so either they're your direct friends or they're friends of friends. In both cases you're able to interact with each other via mutual friends' posts, or through public pages or events. A lot of cyberbullying (and real life bullying) isn't necessarily through directly confronting the victim but rather maliciously and passive-aggressively denouncing them to their friends. As I'm sure you know, it's pretty easy to get teens to join an in-group formed at hating someone, even if they're "friends" with that person.
