I can’t find a chat thread, so this seems as good a thread as any. Some time in the next few months I will be taking receipt of my late grandfathers 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V. I also have a 2019 Ford Fiesta ST. I was gonna make a thread documenting updates/upgrades/maintenance etc for these two cars.

All well and good, but what to name such a thread? Basically I’ve only come up with one: Love on the Spectrum - A Tale of Two Fords
To explain the joke, we have the largest two door car Ford ever made, and the other one of the smallest four door cars. One a personal luxury coupe, the other a sporty utilitarian hatchback. One with a 460 (7.6L) carbureted V8 that runs lean to get 10 mpg downhill, the other with a turbo 1.6L that gets 42 mpg with the cruise control on. Etc etc etc …

Anybody have any better dumb thread titles?

Depending on the make and model, you can get at the latch from underneath. No idea if this applies to the fit, and certainly doesn’t apply to this situation.

Can you move the car from behind it?

So I'm thinking about finally getting my dream/fun car. It's a manual, however. I can kind of drive a manual, but not smoothly. What is the best way to learn? There are training classes near me, but that's 4 hours of training then I'm on my own. Do I just buy an old cheap manual and learn on that for several months until I'm good at it? And shifting in an old junker is also probably a lot different than in a sports car.

Is there another, better option?

Just buy it. You’ll get all the practice you need getting it home. I was in the same boat when I got my car, but now I am decent passable

Probably worth looking into now. You can call your local DMV and just ask them to look it up in their system.

Here in Michigan, they basically just assume anything that someone wants to register must be legal. We don’t have inspections at all, so I can’t offer any help there.

“Lifetime” always means “until the end of warranty,” and nothing else. It’s what the manufacturer considers the lifetime of the car.

So, weird question, but I have an Elantra N, just finished break in, about 1400 miles. I am still learning the car’s clutch/goofy rear end 1st gear assist, and stalled it twice consecutively. Basically stalled it, turned the car back on, accidentally dumped the clutch too fast, stalled it again while the car was turning over.

My concern is that now the clutch engagement point on the pedal feels different, noticeably. The bite seems softer or more gradual. Is it possible I’ve done something to the clutch plate, or am I being a car hypochondriac?

You could always bring it back to the dealer to have it checked under warranty. Clutches are wear items, but if it acts differently because of a stall then it’s not a wear-related problem, and should be covered. Shouldn’t cost you anything, though I wouldn’t mention your story when you bring it in. Just say it feels different now and you want it checked.

You might just be overthinking it though.

Is it a turbo? Turbos require a break-in period of a few hundred miles where you don’t stress the engine. It’s generally good policy to do that for the first few hundred miles of any engine. I’d recommend long unbroken highway drives without a lot of stops.

The Fiesta ST owners manual recommends a break in period where you keep it out of high boost. I was wrong, however, that you should keep it at one speed.

Here’s a section

BREAKING-IN
You need to break in new tires for approximately 300 mi (480 km). During this time, your vehicle may exhibit some unusual driving characteristics.

Avoid driving too fast during the first 1,000 mi (1,600 km). Vary your speed frequently and change up through the gears early. Do not labor the engine.

Do not tow during the first 1,000 mi (1,600 km).

Match in terms of tread depth, size, tread aggressiveness. If you had summer tires, but this was an all-season tire it would perform differently. Likewise if it were a wider tire it would also perform differently.

If it’s roughly the same tread depth, same size, and same style of tire, I’d say keep the cash in your pocket until you get a new set of four.

It’s pretty wild that all the states in the Midwest, where road salt will literally rot your subframe and buckle your suspension, do not have car inspections. Not even just emissions inspections, because everyone’s exhaust has approximately 1/4 the lifespan of anywhere else, but literally nothing. poo poo, in Michigan you just say a car is driveable, no matter the condition, and it’s legal to drive until proven otherwise.

Monday morning I started my car after sitting for the weekend, and the display for the radio was all hosed up.
Its an older style of display, not a touch screen. Its the type that has the display with numbers and letters that look like old style clock radio or digital watch type things (LCD?) and little pixels for other stuff. Anyway, it was all pretty hosed up and I figured it was new radio time. Went to work, car sat all day, started it up and the display was fine and has been fine since.

This morning, I started the car and the Traction control, VSC and ABS lights came on. Shut the engine off, waited a minute or two and started it back up.
Lights went off as per normal after starting.

Whats the deal?

Is this one of the 42069 things that can be caused by a bad ground? Didn't notice the car starting hard, starter struggling or anything like that but I guess theres probably a lot more grounds than just the battery negative cable.

Alternator or ECU has been my experience when those things start happening. ECU was due to squirrels eating the entire wiring harness coming out the back of the computer block.

We're about to take a 1,000 km (600 mile) highway trip with a loaded car (two adult passengers and some cargo). The cargo probably won't exceed 100lbs or so.

Tires are currently pumped to the recommended sticker pressure of 36psi. Should I increase that to accommodate the load? Neither the sticker nor manual have any recommendations. They just list the one cold pressure value.

This is a one time trip. We won't be doing this regularly by any means.

This is an odd question, but the answer is no. You’ll be fine on recommended pressure for regular driving. You’re not even hauling that much weight between the passengers and cargo, so doubly no. Do not over inflate your tires.

Gutting the airflow is probably the best bet, since a lot of smell is gonna come from there. Next is deep wash and scrubbing, probably removing seats and carpet cleaning. With the seats out, shampoo and scrub those suckers too. Finally, you can try an ozone machine, though you don’t wanna gently caress around with it. Follow all safety instructions.

In the end, once you’ve done all the deep cleaning, only you will smell it, nobody else will.
