Goddamn I love this film. Tilda Swinton is the next evolutionary step for humankind- I've adored her since I saw her in The Beach which is one hell of a guilty pleasure movie for me.

For maximum gut punching watch Kevin and then The House of Sand and Fog

I researched Alpha Dog when it was mentioned in this thread a few days ago and was surprised to see the reviews were kind of tepid when it came out. I remember it as a career high for several of the players: Emile Hirsch, Justin Timberlake, Anton Yelchin, Shawn Hatosy, and holy gently caress Ben Foster was a force of nature.

I think about that movie sometimes when I wonder why Ben Foster isn't a megastar. Alpha Dog and 3:10 to Yuma came out at about the same time and it seemed like he was incredibly gifted.

This 100%.

I thought Timberlake was fantastic and have enjoyed seeing him in stuff like Trouble With the Curve.

But Ben Foster... gently caress yeah. I instantly became a fan of his for that performance alone and thought we'd see more of him. He did do that kind of bland sci-fi thing with Dennis Quaid (?) Pandora I think it was but the other films mentioned have been quite good.

Chance Season 1 is really good mostly because of Ethan Suplee's enigmatic character.

Edit: Holy poo poo I just discovered that season 2 is on Hulu!

Double holy poo poo, also found that Travelers season 2 is airing on Canada's Showcase with it debuting on Netflix Dec 23rd.

These 2 definitely snuck up on me.

Yeah Travelers is good. Better than it ought to be, really. The first episode was a little bit hokey but by the 3rd I was pretty hooked.

Basically instead of travelling through time as a complete entity only the consciousness of individuals can travel. A secret task force uses the tech to save the future/prevent crime blah blah blah

In the mood for a bad but brutal Vince Vaughan flick? Brawl in Cell Block 99 is on Amazon Prime and fits the bill.

The plot was pretty silly with lots of holes and bad decisions but the fight scenes, which weren't great, were entertaining enough even with really bad effects Bradley stomping on heads and the final shot especially...
almost papier-mâché quality
.

Vince was good enough- I liked him in this more than anything I've seen him in recently, but Don Johnson.... poor ol' Don needed a much larger role to ham it up. Jennifer Carpenter was just there.

Overall the film felt both rushed and way too slow at the same time; not sure how they managed that.

Now that I've typed all this I can't really say I recommend it unless you're just bored to tears as I was.

Edit:
VVVV I hadn't thought of the grindhouse homage thing and that makes sense though it doesn't change my overall opinion. Maybe if there were more of those scenes I would have caught on. I think there were only 3 where I noticed and they just felt so jarring. I really wanted more fights from the get go so that may be a source of my disappointment with it overall

Just watched The Way Of The Gun on Netflix for the first time in years and I had forgotten how much I like this film. Benecio Del Toro is almost always amazing and even though Ryan Phillippe is hit or miss I really liked him in this very Sam Peckinpah-esque flick written and directed by Christopher "The Usual Suspects" McQuarrie. poo poo, it even has Taye Diggs, Juliette Lewis, and James loving Caan and some really loving good gunfights. The violence is violent and the twists are twisty. This is just a cool goddamn movie through and through. Watch this if you like guns and violence and double crosses.

Speaking of Phillippe, is the Shooter series any good? I quite liked the film with Mark Wahlberg.

Edit: A great double feature if you're in the mood for rad gunplay is The Way Of the Gun and Christian Bale's Equilibrium.

Okay. I just watched the movie, it was fun enough. Nothing too memorable but fun. The scene you're talking about - I'd probably be screaming the same thing if I didn't know it was coming... so when I saw it, I was all, "yeah well that's just to show you that crime doesn't pay and it's bad mmkay." But no - I'll agree with you - wasn't necessary to sell the movie or the scene... kind of like gratuitous boobies.

Thanks for the rec. It was a good afternoon to waste on a bard boiled crime thriller.

Agreed that it was fun but not really memorable. I'll watch anything with Clifton Collins Jr or John Hawkes ; those dudes are just so good.

The Gate, House, and Christmas Evil were staples of my 80's childhood. Holy gently caress I loved the hell out of House. George Wendt was mentioned but it also has Night Court alum Richard Moll, and motherfuckin William Katt (The Greatest American Hero).

I first saw the original Blair Witch on a pirated DVD before the film's release. I was watching it on an old CRT monitor and was laying on the floor with the lights out. I forget tbe exact scene but at a particularly tense moment the monitor switched off into power saving mode so the entire room went pitch black and at that exact instant my little kitten swatted me on the top of my head.
I jumped, screamed like a little girl and my heart was near exploding. Never been scared during a film before or since.

I liked the movie and will still watch it if it's on.
I remember debating the last scene with friends as to whether or not the dude standing in the corner was levitating slightly. The copy we all had wasnt the greastet so it wasnt until seeing it later that we could agree that his feet were on the ground. Woulda been better if he was levitating I think. Witch power!

Anyway that's my BW story and I haven't seen the remake. Or the sequel.

If anybody wants to see a good as hell 70's action thriller, Mr. Majestyk is streaming on Prime. It stars Charles Bronson as a bad rear end melon farmer (literally) who goes to war with escaped convict Al Lettieri and his henchmen (and the police department, and some small time local hoods). It's got a great car chase, a righteous soundtrack, and was clearly an influence on Tarantino.

Hell yes this is a good flick. For more Bronson awesomeness Prime also has The Mechanic which co-stars Jan-Michael Vincent
