I've only painted a handful of miniatures so far, so I'm still learning a lot. I want to try to paint some Black Legion WH40k units. Most people use grey highlights and some of them turn out okay, but I absolutely love this paint job:

I think the key is that there's a lot of detail that isn't black which makes it visually more interesting than 90% of the paint jobs I've seen, but the blue highlights are something I think looks awesome and haven't seen elsewhere.

Can someone tell me which citadel paints are used for the blue highlights on black armor? I'm no good at recognizing colors yet. Paints tend to look different than I expect them to on my models.

edit: I think it's Dark Reaper with either Thunderhawk Blue OR Administratum Grey. Thoughts?

What's the best way to achieve this look? I heard gray often looks boring on models so I want to avoid that while still using this really nice looking scheme.

Is there a good reference out there for what paints work well as various skin colors? I'm specifically looking for Southeast Asian colors at the moment, but will need other colors in the future also.

edit: Found this in the OP and it does in fact tell you specific paints http://www.coolminiornot.com/articles/1310

I didn't put a lot of effort into the model because it was mostly a test for the color scheme but this is the first time I've ever put any real effort into making a cool base before and I'm really pleased with the result:

My eighth or so model ever painted and my second "big" one. I'm pretty happy with it!

Here's my first "big" one:

I'm also pretty happy with this one but the Broodlord came out better.

If you guys have any tips regarding technique or color scheme I'd love to hear it!

So I want to paint some Black Templars but I've never painted pure black before.

I dont like edge highlighting with just grey, it looks flat;

I dont like highlighting with blue as it ends up just looking blue, not black.

My only other idea is to either start black and layer up with black greys or underpaint with grey and glaze black over.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Crossppsting from the Specialist Games thread

I finally got off of my rear end and started finishing my Reaver titans. The first three are now done. They are named The Red Bull, Baba Yaga, and Knochensammler (bone collector)

I'm really happy with how they turned out.

The Red Bull. The art on the carapace and the crown around the head are both inspired by The Last Unicorn

I also put a dying/dead World Eater in the canal before I did the water pour.

Knochensammler. It is a bit hard to see due to the vegetation, but it is stepping out of the woods and stomping through an Imperial Guard artillery battery, with figures fleeing in terror.

Finally, Baba Yaga. I had a lot of fun making the train derailment scene. Z scale trains are perfect for Titanicus.

These are too good.

I think you nailed it actually, I could tell instantly. In reality it's far less red than people think (see photo below). Yours is more red than that but that's fine because people's image of Mars is more red than reality.

Great start! You did a good job on the eyes, those can be easy to mess up.

To bring it to the next level without too much difficulty I strongly recommend a wash and highlighting (I really recommend it and it's not as hard as it might seem, especially with practice). It'll really bring out the shapes. You could also color in some of the details like the tubes and trim.

Keep these miniatures since it can be really fun and motivating to compare your skill later on to when you just started.
