Getting back into painting minis after a nearly ten year hiatus, and even then I wasn't very good.

After magnetizing both Necromunda Escher boxes, I painted my first one! Feels good to finally have a start of a proper Necromunda gang.

https://twitter.com/Ravendas16/status/1547940830341505024

It's a lot easier to paint armless people. Though, I have something like 60-80 arms to paint...

Still need to do the base, and spray matte. The wash I made is very glossy.

Edit:
Re: pinning with paperclips, I got some little drill bit set from Lowes and found one that fits my paperclips perfectly. Need to get some needle nose pliers to actually jam them in and they're snug. Maybe try a bit set and find a better fit?

Finished my 2nd Escher ganger. She's magnetized too, so she has a few choices of arms.

I'm just getting back into painting, so it's mostly base coating, picking out details, some edge highlighting on weapons, and then using a glossy wash that also protects (future). I really need to get a matte spray.

Nothing too fancy, but I'm just glad I'm finally working on a legit Necromunda gang, my first despite having played it on and off since 2003.

Super cool! Did you follow a guide for magnetizing, or just wing it? I've recently got into Necromunda and realizing that as I upgrade people's gear (and at the rate Juves die) that I really need to magnetize or I'll wind up with more gangers than I have Necrons for 40k.

I read how people did it and watched a vid or two.

I have three sizes of magnets: 3mm for the base, 2mm for the torso, and like 1.6mm for the arms themselves.

3mm for bases: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XZ83G9M/
2mm for torsos: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BHKJJFM/
0.0625" (1/16"), or like 1.6mm for arms: https://www.magcraft.com/magcraft-nsn0591

I couldn't find those smaller ones on Amazon, and didn't realize I needed them until the 2mm just didn't fit in arms. You could probably just get them all from that magcraft website if you're in the US. Or if you're magnetizing models with fatter arms, you can stick with the 2mm ones for torsos and arms.

From there, it's basically:
1. Make a 'master' magnet. I green stuffed one down to a base. Use this to track the polarity of each magnet you use. I take each magnet I use individually, put it on there, make a mark on the top of the magnet, and then know that side is 'up'. I make sure the marked side faces out on the torsos, and in on the arms, so that the polarity is always right.
2. Take an xacto and start spinning it in the location you want to put a magnet. You need to make a pilot hole for the pin vice, so it doesn't slip all over.
3. Pin vice time: I have one drillbit for the 2mm, one drillbit for the 1.6mm. I bought a little pack of bits from lowes and tested them out on spare pieces to see which ones fit the magnets snug. I just drill in a bit, deep enough that the magnet is flush at least.
4. With an expendable xacto blade, pop the magnet off of the master magnet, make sure it's aligned the right way, put a drop of super glue in the hole, and press the magnet on the side of the xacto into the hole. Squeeze it tight to get the magnet sitting flush, and slide the blade away so you don't rip the magnet out.
5. That's it!

It's okay to drill a little too deep if the drill bit is perfectly sized and the magnets will be snug. It'll seat far enough in, and the pressure and glue will do the rest.

With this I have managed to magnetize every single Escher arm in the main box, the extra box, and even a pair of WHFB skink arms, just as a test. It's tedious, but it becomes a mindless rote activity. Rarely the smallest bits will start to 'blow out' as the drill bit tears it apart, but you just have to squeeze them tight and they'll be fine. I didn't ruin a single arm, they were all usable. They also all stick amazingly well. Since the models are small and light, there is zero sag. Stick a sword arm raised high, and it stays pointing high, day after day, no sagging.

Here's an earlier pic from when I started.

I use two of these for painting, with the good feit electric bulbs from Costco. They're really nice! I actually have three, I have one on my computer desk, one in the middle of my adjacent craft desk, and one on the edge between the two which can swing between the desks. I paint at my computer desk, and do larger terrain projects at the craft desk, so their range is really useful.

Getting back into painting minis after a decade off, this is my 4th escher I'm working on. Paints are basically all Reaper dropper pot bottles on a wet palette. I have her mostly done, I just need to pick a hair color/style. I guess the tweet helps explain things.

Still need to clean up some bits, but my wash helps hide mistakes afterwards :|

New pics with her 'main' arms on here. Painting yellow is hard. I primed grey, then used Reaper Fire Orange (single thin coat) over it as a base, then one coat of thinned Reaper Golden Yellow on the cords and two coats on the tanks, and it doesn't look very smooth.

Oh well, it's Necromunda, it's supposed to look messy :|

I like it! Nice mix of metals.

My two thoughts: These are orky barricades, and they love gaudy colors. You can just paint these bright colors, and then rust those up to show they're still falling apart.

Also, it's very clean for being rusty and ruined. Dirty it up with some drybrushing and stipling browns and tans, focusing more heavily on the lower half and at the bottom. Or, buy/make some weathering powders and try those out.

But the actual painting is nice :)

Just gotta share, having never used brushes beyond the cheap sables in three packs at hobby shops, I'm pleasantly surprised with this size 1 Joann Fabrics brand 'Artsmith' paint brush for $3. I had to trim the tip slightly as it had a few weird hairs too long, but it's way better than what I was using. Three sessions in and not a hint of the tip curl that my previous brush instantly formed. Nice spring, paint stays wet and flows off well, great point, it's funny how a decent brush actually makes painting so much better.

I hope I never try a good brush because I'd be spoiled from using these nice $3 ones.

My first mini painted in like 4-5 months? I got most of the Vallejo Xpress paints, and wow do they make things fast. This was painted in like thirty minutes.

The hands could use another coat, they're a little bit too bright, but otherwise I love this stuff.

Just did these other two tonight.

Edit:
The red on the two new ones was leftover on the wet palette from yesterday. Came out a lot shinier than the orig dude on the right.
Seems like the Xpress magic goes off overnight

I started using Vallejo Xpress, my first contrast paints. I don't notice reactivation. I think the outcomes are pretty good, considering I never painted many minis and these are the first I've done in 6+ months I think.

Everything but the metals are Xpress here. Leather, wood, red boots and tops, and skin are four different Vallejo Xpress colors, single coats each over a brown/tan drybrushed undercoat. No washes or anything applied over them afterwards either, that's just how they look after a single pass.

I want finished, playable and decent, and a single coat of contrast gets me all of that. For a new painter that just wants results, contrast is great.

So I guess the answer here is "lower the chair". My painting area is in a corner, and I literally just spin my chair around 180 and my work desk/PC is right there. The two desks are roughly the same height, but the new chair has considerably lower arms that can not be raised, I've been using the desk itself instead of the arms of the chair for supports. In order to use the arms and not lean forward, the arms would have to come up 2-3" from their normal position.

Yeah, whenever I paint the first thing is I drop my chair all the way down. Much better angle for painting, and my back doesn't get (as) sore.

I painted a Reaper Bones mini from their first kickstarter, back when they had no clue how to get details in it (see the hands here, they're just lumps, as is the gun in her right hand). The front is a bit of a mess, but I like how the Vallejo Xpress paints worked in her hair and her jacket. This is just 'slapchopped' with a single coat of xpress on her jacket and her hair.

Primed dark brown, tan heavy drybrush, skeleton bone light drybrush, then just a single coat of xpress. Way better gradients and shading than I could do with standard paints.

How are you guys able to take such clear pictures of your minis? Whenever I try, it ends up a blurry, nasty mess with no definition. I would like to show my friends (and you guys!) some cool stuff I've done since having a renaissance of model painting lately, but I don't know how to!

This is my setup:

Indirect filtered light to reduce spotlights, a black background (felt, it's not the best), and I just use a plastic box which gets a neat little reflection at the bottom.

Then I enable 'pro' mode on my phone's camera to mess with the iso and exposure times to control the brightness, and manual focus to control that as well.

The only editing I do afterwards is cropping it to zoom in.
