Also skating in Korea seems like an awful idea. Too many people and/or too much trash and/or crazy scooters, cars, or people in their phones like me.

My gf also got one through KEB/Hana. Similar limit. If you don't want to do a deposit card they seem the easiest. I just got my Shihhan credit card with a 20 mil limit with some fun things like movie tickets, discount on chain coffee, and 20-30% off any sort of transit from bus to KTX to taxi. I save about 30-40k a month in average spending with a 12k annual fee, can deduct up to 1 million off my taxes at the end of the year because I use my credit card as Tmoney and I never have to refill the drat thing.

Shinhan had me have a higher salary in order to get one without collateral. Got it right before looking for a new job, so good timing. Samsung still says I make too little, don't have a high enough status job, don't own property, and/or my company doesn't have enough stake in Samsung. My law firm wasn't one of the ones on their list. I've given up on the Samsung card. Was easier at one time.

Getting Botox based on a webmd search because it's cheaper than going to a consultation at a dentist hoping they're the right person to talk to. Why can't we just have general practice doctors. The medical information line told me they don't do English service anymore and that I should call 1345 (Immigration). That last part is definitely a microaggression.

Your options also improve if you have experience and a masters. Basically if you are exceptionally qualified, surprise it's easier.

Two of us are working as editors at IP law firms.

For contracting jobs you likely have to be hired stateside.

Among the people I know, you get a much better deal being hired from the states and brought over, though the expat package for Korea like everywhere else seems to be drying up.

The E-7 visa covers 85 job codes which have multiple titles underneath them (including sea cucumber farming technician) and the requirements are basically:
High school degree and 5 years experience
Bachelors in the field and 3 years
Masters and 1
Or a degree from a top 100 school and maybe no experience
Or get lucky, these are general standards but the immigration officer has the right to ask for more or less

Back in the States now but need to mail some stuff to my wife's family. Mailing from Korea to the US was so cheap and easy - is there any decent option for the reverse? It's insane; we paid like 40 bucks for a massive 20kg box by boat in Korea but here the USPS wants 90 for a little box of snacks. It seems air is the only possibility here. Am I wrong?

If it's all commercial items you can buy it off amazon or eBay and use a reshipper. But then you're basically buying stuff in the US online and having it shipped to Korea. No special items or notes.

The word of the day is gauche.

After being asked to stay on, for now the 4th month, after being "let go" due to an unfavorable evaluation based on lack of patent law knowledge for an English editor position, the HR guy asked me if I knew a native speaker to fill my position. They haven't been able to find someone since they started looking on January 1. So, already awkward.

Here's the kicker. HR guy asked me after my birthday cake break today. Happy Birthday, do you know any bilingual editors with legal experience and low self esteem to replace you?

My more X rich friends tend to tell me the Seoul/Korea is safe thing is mostly true for men, for women it can be a bit dicier. It is safer in some ways and more dangerous in others, but also depends largely on where you are as with the US in general and specifically any major city in the US or world wide. I've heard awful stories from multiple people about Yeokgok from men and women, Suwon has its stories.

Generally, treat it like most any major city and follow the general rules of safety. It's not some magical safe space, it's a city with humans, some are great and some are lovely.

Oh, Suwon just has a reputation for violence. I routinely walked past street domestic violence and child abuse. It's the only place I've been pushed off a bus or down the stairs. Crime stories of people getting raped and chopped up in a bath tub and police are were incompetent. Some Korean friends won't visit Suwon. In actuality... Don't be dumb and don't involve yourself in personal drama and it's fine. It's just a city like any other. It's just sort of a running joke that Suwon is full of criminals. My coworkers at the law firm say it's done to get people used to it in case of an attack so they're calm. They remembered stopping class and going outside as a kid 30 years ago.

Also make use of reshippers from the US if you need something from a US online site. Cheap and fast shipping. I use ship2korea because I don't have to do customs stuff in Korean with him.

Korean makeup is almost always cheaper than in the US, one of the few things. If you have the time you can walk around Myeongdog or Dongdaemun (I prefer Ddm) and go to specific stores and there should be sales. If you buy quite a bit you can get a lot of extras, hell places in Myeongdong will give you a suitcase to bring stuff back. Missha for example often has huge sales, especially for women's makeup. The standard prices are usually cheaper than the US and on sale it's much cheaper. Men's stuff goes on sale too, but not as often.

Also, drink better makgeolli y'all.

Hey, I've got a visa question I was hoping you guys could help me out with. At least one Korean company has expressed interest in hiring me, but I believe I would need an E-4 technology expert visa (for work in IT). Unfortunately, it seems like you need five years of work experience to qualify, whereas I've only been out of school for four and a half... the company in question said they'd still be interested if the position was still open in July when I qualify, but I'm wondering if there's another way to get into the country without becoming an English teacher. I'm guessing that I would want to try to find an American company hiring for their offices there, which sounds... very specific.

Make sure that it's not 5 years + HS / 3 years + college / 1 year + masters. That's the usual breakdown for "expert" visas. I got in on my E7 with college and 3 years.
