Well, I'm signed up for random berserker risk certainty. :getin:

Just need to dig out my PSX copy. It's been on the order of 10-15 years since I played last, I think.

One question, though: I get what's meant by 750 mode, but what are you guys talking about with breaking rods? It sounds like you're talking about what I always called itemcasting, using the rod as an item, but I was under the impression anyone could do that no matter their class (Except berserker, for obvious reasons).

Dug all through my basket of PS1/PS2 games to try and find my copy of Anthology. It was right on loving top, hidden by the blanket that got tossed over it.

Now I need to see which memory card has my old saves on it, or failing that, which has free space.

I'm still not sure I'd stopped using a Gameshark last time I played. This might actually be my first legitimate run.

Coming back to the game after around a decade of absence, I'm still impressed with the spritework on the backgrounds. In fact, I'm going to do running commentary of my impressions coming back to the game. From start of game to parked near the Wind Temple:

Meteor crashes in glorious Mode7! That always struck me as a really janky way to do things, but I don't think they had any better options.

I'm still impressed by having Boko run in place a little to represent kicking dirt on the campfire. Really, they do a lot with a small number of unique sprites.

For Christ's sake Galuf, of all the things to have forgotten, I would not have expected your weapon to be one of them. Look, Jesus, it's taking two of you to kill a bat.

As mentioned, the backgrounds are really well-done. The pirate ship in particular. I think the only time I've seen spritework with that level of care recently was Bastion/Transistor.

I should probably not be buying weapons (And definitely not spells) until I know what I'll actually be able to use, but gently caress it, Galuf, you're getting a sword. Not like money's hard to come by in any case.

The bit where Bartz and Galuf get smitten by the sleeping Faris I can now recognize as being fairly typical of the Japanese approach to sexuality, but it's handled much better than Persona 4 (Or at least, the anime of it) handled the subject. Also, the music during that scene (I believe the official title is "What?") still reminds me of cheesy porno music.

Okay, I know I ground for levels on Bandrsntch before, but I seem to remember I can't take on three at once. *two OHKOs later* Yup, I was right.

4x Blue Mage is surprisingly difficult from the perspective of someone used to having white and black magic. My healing is covered by Tonics and Red Feast (And probably will be for the foreseeable future), although GobPunch is surprisingly solid damage.

Rolled White Mage for my Fire Crystal job. I am content.

Had to throw Tonics at Iron Claw so he could use Doom Claw before Galuf ripped his throat out with his old man teeth. Also got Aero2 off a Gigas, so my blue magic is coming along nicely.

I also could have wiped easily in Jachol Cave. I remember grinding on Skull Eaters, but obviously not at level 18. I got a first strike and thought "There's only one, might as well Aero2 him before I run... OH poo poo THAT DID NO DAMAGE AND NOW THERE'S SIX OF THEM." :derp:

Honestly I think my Berserker is MVP. Gave him a knife because I hate missing, and he's doing consistently about double the Blue Mages' output, all other things being equal.

10 hours in (At least one of which was just sitting on the menu screen while I was elsewhere), and my final team makeup is Blue Mage/Berserker/White Mage/Summoner. I've already mastered Blue Mage on two characters, and gotten everyone to White 3. Obviously I'm gonna have trouble losing at this point even if I don't optimize, but does anyone have any advice for things I should hunt down before I leave World 1?

I remember Call shenanigans were mentioned on occasion, could someone go into detail on those? I only have Ifrit for summons so far.

Steam sale and Terraria update have kept me away from this game, but I'm into world 3 now. Blue/Zerk/White/Summoner, doing well at level 33. Wiped once in all of World 2 (Single blue dragon in the middle of the lava floors). Passed up L3 Flare because I wasn't the right level when passing through the dragon floors, then hit 33 on the upper floors and got it and Condemned from X-Death himself.

A few questions:
-I have totally forgotten the plot, am I supposed to be doing the Pyramid with only three people?
-Can this team take on either of the optional bosses, and what should I do to prepare for them and NED? I see mention of Death Sickles and rings, I don't have any of those.
-Which weapons should I unlock, and should I go for another tablet, either for the legendary weapons or the other rewards? I'm already planning on Rune Axe-ing someone (Probably my Zerker, because the other three can all fling around Blue or White as needed).
-The combo of Excalipoor and Goblin Punch was mentioned several pages back, but not elaborated on. I'm guessing the sword has a script attached that makes it always deal 1 damage, and GobPunch bypasses that?

I'm about to head up Fork Tower with my Blue/White/Summon/Zerk party. I'm not sure Cutezerker can solo the entire right side, and Mega64's boss guide says that most action commands count as physical. It might be a stupid question, but does !Call? I just think it would be kind of amusing to kill the physical side boss by dropping summons all over him.

If not, I could always shuffle things around and make Krile a Blue Mage with Equip Axes supporting another Zerker.

You should be fine splitting it up as Blue/Zerk and White/Summoner. !Blue isn't affected by silence so I'm wondering if it will be allowed in the physical side of the tower - worst case scenario, slap on some Hermes Sandals and just make them a potion/elixir bot. White/Summoner will wreck Omni especially if they have Reflect.

Good advice, although Mute meant I was stabbing Minitaurus with the Assassin's Dagger with my blue mage. I'm glad I did put Equip Axes on her, it wound up with no one taking any damage in the fight.

Omnipotent did hit someone, but only because I forgot that Reflect wears off really fast.

Overall, the fights went a lot easier than I expected them to, what with everyone talking about running Omnipotent out of MP.

Victory! :toot:

Level 40 party, although Reina was 38 thanks to the absence during the Pyramid. Almost exactly 26 hours of playtime, my final save is at 25:59.

I must have wiped as many times in the last dungeon as I did in the entire rest of the game. King Behemoths. Accidentally stepping on Omega's foot. Thinking I could safely fire up Mighty Guard for Shinryu and eating a 3500-damage Tidal Wave. Twin Tania not following the rules of not doing anything for a round before flipping out and killing everything. I even wiped to a random lone King Behemoth AFTER beating Shinryu but BEFORE beating Necrophobe and getting the save point. That was annoying, but at least Berserk/Blink is literally the third easiest way to beat a boss ever. (Easiest is having a boss vulnerable to L5 Death, second-easiest is teaching Azulmagia Self-Destruct. :getin:)

For those keeping track for donation purposes, this was my first Fiesta, and it's one for the Fartz pile, although that ship has definitely sailed.

I'm considering another run, myself. Given my 26-hour clear time, I could probably blitz through the game again in the rest of this month, considering I won't have the distractions of the Steam Summer Sale and whatnot to deal with.

I will miss my !Blue toolkit, though. I know I had a really good party this time around, but blue magic was seriously carrying me a lot of the time, I would not have been able to clear some fights without it. Or rather, would not have been able to clear some fights at full health. White Wind is OP.

I think it's also the first time I've ever collected the entire Blue Magic set for this game, and only the third time in the franchise (I filled out an Enemy Skill materia in 7 and Quistis' Limit Break list in 8).

Come to think of it, a Job Class-based run of FF7 would be interesting.

Registering for a second run was a mistake, I think. I'm just past the ship graveyard with Knights and have absolutely zero interest in doing anything with the game now. If I had it on emulator and could speed up the story, it might be tolerable, but now I just find myself thinking about FF7 instead whenever I pick up the controller.

So while I'm on that topic, is there any interest in a thread for a Job Class-based FF7 challenge, or should I just think about it on my own?

Well, I say "class-based", but it's more a shorthand for "A pile of materia that loosely matches one or two classes' skill sets". Initially I checked for extant class-based challenge runs, but it was all "Make this character this class, use only these materia, I don't care that some of them are only available on disc three." I wanted to keep the spirit of the class-based structure while maintaining a majority of the flexibility that materia gives you. I decided that someone needs to have either everything I can stick on them to fill a role, or only a single thing. Like Cloud started with Lightning-All, and I thought "Okay, he's now a Black Mage. Barret, you get the Restore materia, you're now my White Mage." Everything else was just playing it by ear, especially where "sub-classes" were involved. Like, early on I had Monk with Deathblow, Restore-All, and Life to give the feel of the FFT Monk with Chakra and Revive. Since that's only four slots filled, I would think "Well, might as well give them Steal, too, since I don't have anything else that matches Thief..."

Once I got more than one summon, I either had to equip all of them on one person, or only give them Choco/Mog or one of the main three (Ifrit/Shiva/Ramuh) to support another class. A Time Mage needed Time, Gravity, and Comet, and if I wanted someone to subclass Time Mage, they could absolutely not have Comet. Black Mage eventually got Throw-MP Absorb to represent Lancet (I bought several dozen early-game swords for throwing purposes once I started mastering materia). A Beastmaster build had all the Enemy Skill materia (Doesn't add anything, but at least all of them get the skills) plus Manipulate and Added Effect-Transform.

Some classes "fully unlock" way later in the game than they would if the designers had made any plans for class-based gameplay. Like a key feature of Ninja is double attack, but I just hit disc three and don't have the 2xCut materia yet. It's just been subclassing with Throw so far. I have been cripplingly overspecialized on occasion, mostly when I realize I forgot to give whoever's hauling all the White Mage materia (Restore, Heal, Life, Mystify, Seal, Barrier, maybe Destruct if it's not on the Time Mage) an attack besides just hitting things.

Primarily for me, it's interesting just coming back to FF7 after over a decade and seeing how it holds up. One thing that was obvious coming in fresh off of FFV is how much of a transitional phase 7 was between the styles of the series, from the moderately-wacky jumble of grab-bag characters, monsters, and motivations of 4, 5, and 6 to the more planned and structured ecologies and plotlines of 8 onward. Like some of FF7's enemies are three-dimensional versions of ones from prior games (And I don't just mean Malboros and Behemoths, but things that haven't become staples, like Death Claws) and others are just weird and have no internally consistent ecological niche, like the Jokers and russian doll enemies near Corel/Costa Del Sol.

And it has held up well, the combat is still enjoyable, the minigames are still fun, the characters are still interestingly-characterized. About the only thing that bothers me now that didn't bother my younger self is the Highwind having two upgrades that are basically just jettisoning the old engines and firing up go-faster ones. One's an "oh poo poo" button in the ending cutscene, but still.
