Aurain posted:Scott Pilgrim is garbage, and I'd rather read nothing but the worst of the worst parts of the bad Part 5 translations over anything regarding SP ever again. It's basically 9gag in book format. I like the idea of Scott Pilgrim a lot- pixelpunk, or whatever you want to call that, where it's a world kind of like the real world except there are video game mechanics. But yeah, in execution it all feels kinda derivative after the initial sheen wears off. Great soundtrack in the game they made for it, though.

He got incredibly mad if you called it "American Manga" because the dude who wrote it is Canadian and "it's disrespectful to call a graphic novel a manga". Lmao it's a (originally) black & white comic with heavily manga-influenced visual style, that's published by an outfit called "Oni Press". The only way it could be more of a manga is if it was drawn by a Japanese guy. It's like somebody saying, "Don't taint this beautiful work of art with that word, furries! These are clearly anthropomorphic animals. It's completely different "

Xibanya posted:I saw a lot of criticism of Speed Racer that was related to how the world it presented would collapse on itself out of sheer impossibility. And I haven't even looked too deeply at criticism of the Scott Pilgrim movie (I saw it last night) but what I've already seen is people complaining about how it doesn't make sense that the main character in a modern day North American city could go around wire-fu fighting people to death without getting arrested. That particular criticism of Scott Pilgrim doesn't really hold any water. It's the same world where the Vegan Police, actual sorcerers, and subspace exist. You explode into a pile of coins upon death, and you can respawn if you do some soul searching. Fuckin nobody bats an eye when it turns out that Scott has to fight Seven Evil Exes. It's easy enough to just say that the police in that world don't get involved in weird vendetta duels. It's common in a lot of fiction, though. DiU resembles Persona 4 in that it has a pretty huge body count, especially considering it takes place in a small town. You'd think there'd be panic in the streets and martial law at the rate that weird supernatural crimes keep occurring. That's not what the story is ultimately about, though. It's not a police procedural, a tense drama, or a disaster movie- it's a story about these intense characters who get into weird fights, and clash with their manly emotions. Consider Stardust Crusaders- any time the police get involved, it's basically a distraction. Sometimes it's a punchline. The very arc's entire purpose is twofold: explain what a Stand is, and show the reader that normal people, including the authorities, have no power to understand, control, or otherwise fight a Stand.

Hobgoblin2099 posted:But only three people died in Persona 4. Yeah, consider the size of that town, though. That's like a massive spike in murder rate per capita, and they're totally unsolvable crimes. You could also point out that the Mystery Kids are super obvious about how they cross between dimensions (big TV in a department store with security cameras), and wonder who gave Naoto a real live handgun in Japan. None of these things matter very much in the service of the story that the game is trying to tell, so they get brushed aside. The game is ultimately better for it. Imagine if you had to do some stealth minigame every time you wanted to jump inside the TV.

BaDandy posted:Oh, that also made me think of this old chestnut. I like the stunning lack of self-awareness in that article and also the comments. Of course the male author can pledge to not get uppity about how Jojo drawings make him feel objectified. It's because he can walk away from his TV and go literally anywhere to not feel objectified at. If a woman puts down Dragon's Crown and walks outside, there will still be no shortage of people and things available to remind her that her worthiness as a person is directly proportional to the extent that she resembles a cartoon porn star, including but not limited to: both her parents, the fashion and cosmetic industries, gendered marketing of products in general, random dudes in the street, and possibly her employer.

Stuff like Jotaro showing off a billion party tricks or Polnareff starting eating contests. Jotaro's hidden repertoire of stupid party tricks is my favorite thing about that episode. It's like a final confirmation of all the little hints about how he's secretly a big goony mama's boy who had no friends and infinite free time up until his Stand first appeared. He can totally do that Thing With The Cigarette without even using Star Platinum to cheat, and that's awesome.

Bad Seafood posted:fight talk Echoes causes you to hear sounds or words directly into your mind (except for when it also makes those sounds physically, for reasons). For the type of cacophonous noises he was attaching to Kobayashi, it stands to reason that those would get really distracting and migraine-like as they stacked onto each other. Attaching actual words, "Believe in me" to his mother, on the other hand, was more like a subliminal suggestion. She has no idea that she's been affected by a Stand, so when she starts to hear Koichi's plea "Believe in me" echoing in her head, she thinks that it's her conscience crying out for her to believe her beautiful baby boy. Koichi won because of his virtue, not his strength. I'd say that Koichi didn't win because he "tricked" his mom into breaking her own lock. In fact, breaking her own lock was something that she did with her own will, in an act of true forgiveness and expression of trust. Kobayashi could have continued the fight from there if he had wanted to. However, and this is important going forward, Koichi's mother believing in him despite everything was an event that shook Kobayashi to his core. He had believed up until that point that his behavior was fair because everybody is essentially a fraud and a crook, and he has to survive in that world. When Kobayashi sees somebody forgive another person in such a pure way that it breaks his Stand Lock, which he previously believed could only be broken by himself, it proves to him that the world really does contain good and trusting people who want to do right by each other. He stops the fight because he realizes the error of his ways, and can no longer bring himself to harm Koichi or his family.

Prison Warden posted:I think a bunch of people were expecting if they did do a British accent he would sound rougher and more working class, even though that makes no sense and Joseph is in a lot of ways a very accurate upper class English kid. He's the kind of guy who spent his younger years at Eton shoving Andrew Cavendish's head into the toilet. Yeah, people forget that even upper-class people were Tough Rough Dudes around the turn of the century and prior to that. Jonathan and DIO being terrifying street boxers isn't all that weird; the nobility has always been expected to be skilled in weapons and fighting by way of tradition, going back to the time when they were all expected to function as military officers. This would have also been a time period when you were practically encouraged to shove Andrew Cavendish's head into the toilet, because that's just Healthy Competition Between Boys.

David D. I think subsequent episodes will confirm that Kakyoin is the #1 shady dude, and that's frankly okay.

Josuke Higashikata posted:Here's just a few problems with Part 3 stand naming in general. 1. It doesn't matter too much because people are born naturally with Stands, like Kakyoin. They're called Stands for the same reason that people in the south refer to all sodas as "Coke"; it just happens to be the word that caught on. 2. I dunno, probably Enya, or somebody before her, since Avdol does it, too. It could be that it's normal for Stands to be able to exert subconscious influence on any type of device intended for divination. 3. I don't think it necessarily is, or if it is then it's because there aren't all that many Stand Users, ordinarily. 4. See 2. If Stands naturally influence the outcome of a Tarot reading, then it doesn't matter what Avdol knows. 5. Sometimes Stands name themselves, or the user names them if nobody gets to them with a Tarot Deck? Maybe one of those guys was like, "Chartreuse 3 of Cups? gently caress that."

Moltrey posted:I really like that the reason for the main power in this series being called Stands is just because they are a presence that stands by you and that's it. Yeah, Avdol sells it really well. It's one of my favorite panels because it epitomizes the JoJo tradition of making a really simple conversation almost comically dramatic. It's a really dramatic viewing angle, everybody just looks intense as gently caress, and Avdol is just giving Araki's elevator pitch for Stands while he chokes the life out of Jotaro with psychic fire.
