Part XIX: The Tragic Side of the Woman's Love

What are you doing? Are you... Working out? Another pointless effort...

It's not pointless!

S-Shallie... When did you...!?

I... I did it! I beat Kortes! ...I can do things when I set my mind to them... Um... Kortes? ...Kortes!?

Ugh...when did you get stronger than a dragon? I'll be fine, I just need to rest. Ugh...

Stera, that was so awesome!

Haha, really? We've been doing so much fighting lately, I guess I just had a lot of practice.

So awesome!

What's wrong...?

That should be obvious! He's always treating me like a kid... He doesn't need to bully me just because he's old and cranky about it!

Old... Cranky? Who...?

Keithgriff! Who else around here is a mean old geezer with a mustache!?

(I shouldn't laugh, right...?)

I might look like this, but I'm a respectable adult! Nobody can complain about my skills with magic, either...! Yet he still can't accept me... And it's not just Keithgriff. The Grand Master won't recognize me as a full-fledged magician either. I can use all kinds of magic, and I've obtained some pretty dangerous power. If that's not enough, I'm at a loss...

Wilbell...

Just kidding! If I complain about something like this, I'll just get further away from my goals. Okay, enough stalling. Next up, a fresh plan for revenge against Keithgriff. What do you think?

A fresh plan for revenge... That sounds exciting!

Why, hello you two! So this is where you were?

Oh, Harry.

Did something good happen?

Why yes indeed! Today is truly a great day! That's because... Today is the day when my autobiography, "The Harry Chronicles", is released!

C-Congratulations...! (He really wrote it...!)

I'd like to offer this significant work of literature to my young friends... You'll accept it, yes?

O-Of course!

U-Um...thank you for thinking of us!

No need to thank me. You inspired me to write it, after all, so think of it as a reward! "From the Wilderness", my previous book, was also a masterpiece, but this epic may outshine even it! If you ever feel down, you should give it a read. The tales of my past adventures will surely inspire you.

O-Okay...

Hahaha! But, fascinating as it is, you shouldn't read it here. Go home and read it! I'll take my leave now. There are still countless others awaiting my latest work! Please tell me your thoughts when we meet again!

Hello, Homura.

Walk with. Me. Much to tell. Of my. Adventures!

Want to know. Why I became. Treasure hunter?

You have such a small body, but you're so brave and wonderful...!

Hey. Don't call small. Shallie. Since long ago. Was interested. In outside world. Want to know. Truth of world.

The truth of the world... That sounds really cool!

Right? All homunculus. Have some dream. No. Might not be right. Anyway. My dream.

Okay...

Then. Met Solle... Helped Solle. Saved money. For adventure.

That's great, Homhom!

Now. Treasure hunt. Makes money. Two birds. One stone.

So you fulfilled your dream...

Homhom, you're even cooler than I thought!

Keith. Wanted man. What do you want?

"Wanted"?

Yes. Solle tells me. Keith. Bad man!

That depends on what you mean by bad. But enough... I'm simply searching for the truth... You could say we're the same.

Is this. True. Shallies?

Yes. Keith's journey is to find the truth behind the Dusk.

I see. Didn't know. Unexpected associate.

I have a proposition for you.

What? Have bad feeling.

I'd like to research you. I've said this before, but it's rare to find an individual like yourself...

K-knew it!!

Hey... Keith...!

What are you saying Keith!?

I refused. Already.

This is necessary to find the truth. I'd like your cooperation.

Hahh. Homhom's got it rough...

I guess Keith's just really eager to study...? I wonder how Keith would study Homura.

Knowing Kieth, he might try to dissect him... We should probably keep those two apart when we're outside of town...

Music: Um, Er... I think

(Huh? Katla... I wonder what's wrong?)

Hello! How's it going?

...Does it look like it's going well?

...What happened?

The water...

The water? ...Oh! The water! What happened with that? Shouldn't you have sold out by now?

No! There's no way I can sell something like that!

Huh, why!? You were the one so full of confidence that it would sell!

Before you say that... Why don't you two think about what you did recently.

Recently...?

Huh? We didn't do anything to make you mad!

What have we done recently? We explored the Castle of Mirages, we talked to Keith about the droughts, we discovered new water sources...

That's just it! Everyone was happy after hearing about a new water source.

Everyone was happy? That's great...!

Yeah, it is! Thanks to that, the water shortage was eased a bit, so it's not bad...

Ah! W-wait!

...it seems you've finally noticed. If the water shortage goes away, there's no way to sell overpriced water!

Oh... Now that you mention it...

Thanks to that, I can't sell it at all unless I cut the price to normal! Hahh... All this bulky stuff is just getting in the way of business now. I should just put it on clearance...

(I see... This might be bad for Katla, but it's fine if everyone is happy now.)

So...what are you going to do now?

I've still got to get rid of this water, and then... I don't know. Can you guys take me out on an adventure sometime? I used to adventure with Escha a lot!

I don't know if we can... Don't you need to be near your shop? I don't want to cause anymore trouble for you.

I don't know if I can be in more trouble...

Hello young ladies. Making any money?

Hello, Reyfer.

Nobody would have trouble if it was that easy to make money!

Hahaha, that's true.

Reyfer, are you working as a treasure hunter because you want to get rich?

...Sure, I want to get rich, and quickly. I think any treasure hunter feels that way.

I see...

But... That's not the real thrill.

Oh? Then what are you really after?

That's my dream... I guess you could just say it's a romantic ideal.

Does that mean you want to be the first to find something?

It's not just about being first. First off, it needs to be an awesome treasure. You need that for people to take notice.

I see... So you want people to remember your name.

...That doesn't quite seem right...Although I do want to have a reputation among hunters. Anyway, secondly, I need to get rich. Doesn't that sound great?

Sure... (I kind of understand, but not really...?)

Romance is simple and pure, yet complicated and profound... But this is a man's romance. it might be hard for young ladies like you to understand...

Don't jump to conclusions like that! I feel like I...kind of get it!

Hm, I don't think I get it... I'm a little jealous.

Oh, hello Shallies!

Hello Escha. What are you doing here?

I'm on my way back from delivering something to the Corporation. I was running, so I got thirsty...

Oh! Then why don't you stop by my house for tea? It's really close.

I wouldn't want to intrude.

You're always helping out, you're more than welcome! You should come too, Shallie!

Sure. It's this way, Escha.

Uu... Okay, I guess I'll take you up on that your offer...

Hello Shallies, and...

Oh, are you Shallie's mother!? I'm Escha Malier, I was sent here by Central! Shallie is always helping me... Oh, and I was invited today...

Don't worry, just make yourself at home.

Escha is our senior for alchemy.

I don't know about senior. I think you two could catch up in no time.

Also, Escha is really good at making sweets!

Oh my... I'd like to try them sometime. Anyway, I'll go make tea.

Your mom seems really kind, and gentle, and wonderful...

She's pretty much just an airhead.

She's always looking after me, too. I feel almost like your sister, Shallie.

What kind of person is your mom, Escha? Is she also good at making sweets?

Hmm, I don't know about sweets... She's really good at writing story books though.

Story books!? That's wonderful...!

An automaton!?

Your mom died!? I'm so sorry!

Oh, no, don't worry about it. It happened a long time ago, after all, but...thank you.

I see... What kind of automaton is she?

Kind, knows everything, scolding me when I goofed off... Just like a human woman... That's why I still had a happy childhood.

I didn't know... I'm sorry for bringing it up.

No, it's okay. Hmm, I want to go see her again once I'm done with work.

Please invite me when you do!

Me too, I want to go, too!

Ehehe, that's good. I'm happy you feel that way!

Huh? Over there, is that...

Ms. Odelia and Albert?

Ah, Odelia, would you kindly accept a humble gift from a pitiable man who is drowning in his love for you?

Half of the words in that statement were unnecessary and meaningless. In summary, what exactly am I to receive?

Wow, Ms. Odelia is brutal...!

Maybe she just didn't understand what he meant...?

Your voice, which flows from such lovely lips, rings like a beautiful bell. Ah, how charming!

My vocal mechanisms do not have any functions resembling a bell.

Odelia, these roses bloomed just this morning. Does their color not resemble your eyes, and the color of the sky?

I cannot determine the model number of my ocular components. In summary, what am I to do with these cut flowers?

They are a gift! I could not sleep a wink since last night... Please laugh, and have pity upon me.

...Is this a command to "laugh"? Or is this indicative of some other action?

I'm starting to feel more and more sorry for Albert... Al isn't getting it at all. I'm feeling more sorry for Ms. Odelia.

Ah, if only my humble gift could reach your heart...

This appears to be a metaphorical expression. Searching, please wait.

I have determined that this means to be happy with your gift. A gift is an item presented to another free of charge. However, I have no use for cut flowers.

I see... But gifts do not have to be something useful. Would you please accept them?

An expression once used by my master's apprentice's younger sister may be appropriate, I shall recite it. You must consider the other person when giving a gift. You cannot give them what they don't want. That is all. I have business to attend to, so excuse me.

Odelia... But what do you want...? I suppose this yet another trial, imposed upon this loving man!

I didn't know Ms. Odelia could do that. It must be nice to be able to express your true feelings that openly...

I feel kinda bad for Al, though... I know we were planning to go to Miruca's, but maybe we should get those automatons we found first for him? It's not like either of us will ever use them.

Yeah, good point.

Two automatons...! Wow, you two really are amazing. Here's your reward.

5000 Cole and all these nice items? Are you feeling okay, Al?

Of course! Automatons are truly priceless! Still, to think that you keep finding automatons one after after... I really do have good friends.

Oh stop it, complimenting us that much is embarrassing!

...I know! As thanks... I'll tell you about my secret plans! To tell the truth, I'm thinking about building new automatons... And mass producing them too!

What!? Can you really do that...?

A-Are you serious!?

Heh heh, surprised? But I can tell you, this isn't an unrealistic dream. I got the idea when I was talking with you and Miruca the other day. The machines she's using are based on ancient alchemy, right? Well, automatons are products of ancient alchemy as well. Thanks to you, I've obtained plenty of samples. If I can analyze them properly, I think I can do it.

So that's why you were collecting so many.

Exactly. And if I'm successful in mass producing automatons, the lives of the people would change dramatically. Considering the benefit that would bring, the money I'm spending now to collect them is just a minor investment.

(I didn't think Albert's dream was something so spectacular... A future where everyone lives with automatons... That sounds like fun.)

And that will bring me even closer to Odelia's charms... Each individual automaton is wonderful, but Odelia is exceptional...

(M-Maybe I spoke too soon...)

But Al, won't Perriend get mad if you don't take over the Corporation?

I admit, he's not excited about this plan, but when I take over the Corporation, then I can make it happen! Just you wait, Odelia!

Uh...she's not here right now...

Sorry for asking for help out of the blue...

No problem! I had some free time, and this is a learning experience for me.

Oh good...

Excuse me.

Welcome.

Oh, Lotte, you're here too!

Stera? What's up? ...Something smells really good.

I bought some snacks for everyone to share.

What!? That's so thoughtful, Stera!

Ahh, I ate so much... I'm stuffed.

You know, if you eat too much, you won't be able to eat dinner.

Yeah, probably...

Yeek... Won't your mom get mad?

It's fine. My mom usually just goes along with whatever, really.

Is that... A good thing?

Also, Stera, where did you buy these snacks? They're really good!

I know, right? I actually got these from a shop Solle recommended.

As I'd expect from Solle! I need to thank him next time... Oh, thank you, too, Stera. That was really good.

Don't mention it. I wanted to try them anyway.

I need to get back to work. Feel free to leave when you finish your tea.

Huh!? ...Miruca?

What was that... Did I do something wrong?

No... She's usually like that...

Ah, wait! I have some business!

What...is this?

I know the recipe seems unusual, but this is what he gave us.

...It looks like it's a crystallized power source made from ancient alchemy techniques. I'll try...

Is this for a ritual? This weapon has a strange shape...

It looks like there's weird energy seeping out!

I don't get it either. But I made it as asked, so there shouldn't be a problem.

It does look like something he'd use...

Honestly, Keith would be okay just finding a random rock and using it...

Maybe we don't need this...

There! It's done!

That looks...strange. What is it, Stera?

It seems like it's some kind of monster ward. It's a recipe passed down in Lugion, which is why our village is safe from monsters even if we don't have many fighters like Kortes. It should still work around here, but I can't tell why it works.

Huh...weird.

If won't. Tell Keith. I talk.

Oh yeah... How did you get away from Keith yesterday?

Hid behind. Barrels. Got bored. Gave up.

Homura really might not be safe with Keith around...

Is this something you don't want him to know?

When I. Was born...

...... Too long ago. Forgot...

What?

...But. Humans there. I think...

So... Does that means you were born and raised in a human city or village?

...Maybe. Humans. Like Shallies... Alchemists. I think...

So you were born in a city or village of alchemists?

Don't think. It was good memory...

Not really. Something I want. To remember. Sorry. Shallies. Come back. Another day...

S-Sure... Hey, Lotte, do you think Homura is really, really old?

Huh? Why do you say that?

He says he might have been born in a village of alchemists. A whole village... Alchemy was much more common in the past, so I was thinking Homura might be really old.

Oh yeah! And homunculi live much longer than people do... Weird.

Wh-What happened...!?

Huh!? Me?

This scary customer is disturbing my business! He saw a poor, weak, girl was running the shop and starting haggling for rock-bottom prices... Isn't that awful?!

Hmm, I see you've gotten pretty good with words. I'm happy to see that. But... You still have a lot to learn if you want to beat me. Take this...I know you can still afford to sell this for less. Just give up and drop the price!

You see?! He's done it before, too!

I see... So that's what you meant.

B-But... Katla's just trying to get by, she can't cut prices too much...

No, this girl isn't the kind of person who'd lose heart this easily. Don't worry! C'mon now, you can drop the price again, right?

Wh-What are you talking about!? I can't lower the price any more than that!

Don't worry, you can do it. Just believe in yourself!

N-No, I'm saying it's impossible!

Reyfer, aren't you a capable hunter? I'm sure you've got plenty of money, why don't you go easy on her?

I never spend any more than is absolutely necessary. Go on, give this pathetic man a break.

F-Fine! I get it! I just have to sell it to you at the price you want, right?!

Yeah, exactly. I like girls who do what they're told.

Whatever! Just leave now, please!

Reyfer definitely isn't your average customer...

There're so many things here! I never imagined I'd see something like this back in the village.

Yeah, there's lots of stuff. There're things that've been excavated from ruins. Though, I dunno if they're real. Oh, see... Check this out.

Yes, out of everything here, this was what caught my eye. Rare articles are generally only found by people who understand their true value.

(Is that really a rare item...?)

Hm, looks like Harry's getting fooled by shady junk again. Wait? That item is...

(Could it actually be a rare item with value...?)

Harry... I see you found something nice.

Oh, it's you! Yes, take a look at its unique shape! The colors that show its age and rarity!

That's right! Wow, you guys really do have a sharp eye! I'll give you a discount as well!

By the way... I got this from a specialist who came back from visiting some ruins...

Well it's a bit of a shame to part with it... But it's probably best for someone who knows its true value to take it.

Really? I can't believe my incredible luck!

Hey! This item has a way higher quality than that thing!

You don't even know what it is, how can you judge its quality!? I already had a specialist appraise it...

I understand, I'll pay well for it!

Really? Well then... How about....10,000 Cole?

10,000!? It must be an incredible item to demand such a high price! It was a pleasure doing business with you, young lady! Now then, I must be off! I have to return to the east with my partner!

That about does it.

That was amazing, master. I'm surprised you happened to such a high quality item on hand!

Oh, that? It was junk.

Wait, then...!

Yeah... You're not actually a master criminal, are you??

I mean it was junk to ME. Doesn't mean it wasn't something Harry thought was valuable... Cha-ching!

I wonder if it's even possible to make a lot of money without doing things like that...

Uu, I don't know who to trust...

Is that the same item from Harry's book?

Yes. After Teo gave us the recipe for the Eyedrops of Truth, I need to improve my alchemy skill. Can you help me here, Lotte?

Oh sure! Let's see...

A...Dowsing Rod? Wait, something like that might be really useful for looking for good artifacts on our investigations.

It's another recipe Teo gave me.

Oh yeah, you mentioned your village has some alchemists, too...

Yes, but Teo can't do alchemy himself. He just knows some old recipes in my family.

The power of Dragons is amazing...

Yes... Still, I'm a little sad we have to fight them.

You mean that talk you had with Kortes? It's okay, a life of fighting isn't for everyone, Stera.

I know...

You...what are you doing here?

I was going to ask this girl something, but that monster there... It's not real, is it?

No, it's something I created as alchemy training for Stera and Lotte. They fight it, and they use all their skill to defeat it.

Hm, well, I would be interested in helping them with this. I see some value in it, at least.

Oh yeah!? Well, if you're fighting, then I'm fighting too! Let's go!

Music: FJ: Secret Arts

*pant pant pant*

That was...acceptable.

You haven't seen anything yet!

So you've finally made them? Well, if you're planning on using them, you won't need to take them outside of town. Just apply a bit to your eyes, and you should be able to see your way past the illusion trick.

Wow...how do you know all this stuff!?

Haha! An old man like me has heard a few things in his time. Come back if there's any problem with them.

Alright, let's find the treasure of the ghost ship! For real this time.

Wait...didn't we get turned around somewhere?

Yes, I think so. Let's retrace our steps.

Wait. Look like there's something on that desk. Was it there last time?

Hm.... Hey, Lotte! ...Take a look at this!

What is it? Did you find some treasure!?

No, it's not. I just found this nearby...

...This is a diary, isn't it?

Yes, and when I opened it... I found this inside.

A picture? That's nothing strange. Maybe it belonged to the person who owned this diary?

Probably, but... Don't you recognize the woman in this picture?

...Rose!?

I thought so too!

Yeah, this face... There's no mistake! Then that means the man next to her...!

We can't just stand around here! We need to bring this back to Rose!

Yes... We should find that door now, though. I'm starting to get scared...

Narrow passages everywhere. Maybe this was a storage area, or simply a a series of passages leading to the back of the ship. It's just too broken down to tell at this point.

Keith, have you run into a lot of ruins like this?

No. Abandoned ships like this hold very little interest for me and my research, and I've only been in the Stellard region for a little while. My concern is mostly from ruins from the past.

So you...only visit ruins that interest you?

I visit ruins that I think will bring me closer to the truth. If I don't think so, then no, it has no interest to me.

Wow...it's so dark here. I almost can't see where I'm going. That means...we must be getting close to the treasure!

Doesn't look like there's anything beyond this.

A place like this... Feels a little strange.

Senses. Sharp. Nose. Tickling!

This seems like it's the deepest part... If there's treasure, it would be here...

This place is so creepy...!

Sure does live up to the name "ghost ship"...

Don't say things like that while we're IN here!!

...Are you scare--

No! Just, you know, if you say things like that, sometimes they actually happen! That would be REALLY bad!

...Shh, quiet.

...Huh?

A... A ghost... Wait, an octopus!?

Don't let down your guard... This must be the current master of the place... Let's go!

Guardian of the old ship

Music: Octopunch

Alright! Now we'll finally get to see some treasure...!

...Here.

This is it...? What's with all the cheap looking junk...?

...I didn't expect treasure like this, that's for sure.

This is a bit disappointing...

Argh! It's all worthless!

It seems, perhaps, that the story was embellished... Quite a bit. Hm. On one hand I'm disappointed, but personally, I'm glad I got to see the ghost ship of legends. Also... This doesn't mean I'm finished. I'm going to keep looking for treasure...

...

Let's make sure to check this area thoroughly.

Not as much as I thought, but even so, these are some valuable ingredients.

Hey Lotte, when we get back...

Yeah, we should give Rose that diary. I'm sure she'd want to have it.

Pretty much just as a coworker. Why?

Oh! I'm curious, too!!

They might not talk much, but they seem to understand each other really well!

Yes, that's right. That's why I was asking...

...There's nothing like what you're thinking.

So what is there, then?

I told you...

It's just...you two seem like complete opposites. I didn't think you would be able to get along at all.

(So that's all it was.)

(S-she'll hear you...!)

...Yup. It's probably just because we've known each other for so long.

Oh my... Give me? Whatever could it be?

We found these inside a ship... Please take a look.

... You found these inside a ship? Where exactly was it...?

It was in the Sea, a little to the south of the Sand Dragon's nest.

I see. So that's where he was... To be honest... I had kind of given up hope already. It's been so long since he passed away, after all.

By "he"... Do you mean the man in that picture?

Yes. He... He was a very, very kind man. He accepted a magician like myself without any prejudice or fear... That's why I decided to live with him, and even throw away the long life being a magician had given me... However, I made that decision a little too late. By the time I prepared myself, he had already... I decided to quit being a magician after that. Whatever power I'd had, it hadn't been enough to save the one person who mattered most. I despised myself, and hated the fact that magicians even existed... I decided to use the long years I had left to search for a memento of him.

Rose...

There aren't many magicians left in this world. We're a people who are merely a remnant of an age long past. I'm sure one day your young friend from earlier will find herself struggling with the magician's path.

That's actually really sad. Poor Rose :smith:
Although yeah, that was it for the ship? Kind of a letdown.

By the way, the first scene of the next update will make very little sense if you have been collecting all the automatons. I've already shown where you get all four you need to collect to proceed in Chapter 9, but for review's sake, here's the locations one more time. There's one in the Crystal Valley, one in the Heaven's Vine, one in the Castle of Mirages, and one will end up in Albert's hands whether you buy it or not. There's a total of six, but if you're playing the game, you only need to worry about the first three.

Still stoked you finally have Keithgriff as a party member.
Dunno why I like him as a character so much, he barely has any progression or anything, probably just him drilling to find out whats happening.

He saved Nio for Ayesha in the first game (if you were too slow to save her yourself, like me).

Part XX: The True Side of the Buried Remains

The unlikely solution

Yes...

Then... The cause of the drought was nearby the whole time?

This is hard to believe...

Is it possible to get to where the device is?

There's no doubt a path exists... The problem is the entrance.

Where's the entrance?

The Ruins of Frozen Time.

What? No way...

There's an enormous gate there. It has to be opened first.

How would we open it?

Opening a locked door is the same, no matter what the size of the door. You use a key, or destroy it.

Can we really destroy it??

I've already tried, and no, we can't.

I'll pretend I didn't hear that...

Sounds like the only way is to find the key, then.

Automatons?

If you're curious, it's a singing type of automaton, a different model from myself.

I... What? Automatons can sing?

It looks like it, after examining the automaton in the Ruins of Frozen Time. Including the remaining one, only a total of 6 singing ones exist.

So the gate will open if we gather all 6?

The resonance generated by the sounds made by all 6 will open the gates.

But it's not like it's easy to find the automatons!

How many have we found somewhere?

There was one in Faav Village... The one they called a goddess.

And then there's still 4 left. There's nobody who'd collect things like that, either... Wait...

Music: Bursting March

What's wrong?

Ahhh!! There IS someone! Someone's who's really into that kinda stuff!

Huh? Who?

Albert!

She might not seem as lovely as Odelia, but she's a very, very special treasure to me...

Don't worry, it's just a quick check!

Hmm...

Wow! She sang!

Isn't she wonderful? I get to hear her lovely singing voice once in a while...

There's no mistaking it.

Albert... We have to borrow this!

Okay, I don't min-... What?

We're done here. We should get looking somewhere else.

W-wait a minute! Why?! Why are you taking her away!

Sorry, Al... This is an emergency. We'll return her later.

We'll be using it for its original purpose... You don't need to apologize.

You already have Odelia, why would you take Odetta too?! It's awful!

Odetta? Did you name this automaton yourself, Al...?

What are we gonna do about Al?

It's not necessary to do anything about him. We need to stay focused on collecting the automatons. How many were you two able to collect?

We've found three. That means there's only one we don't know about.

Did you forget already? There's one already at the Ruins of Frozen Time. Once we retrieve the one in the village, that will be all of them. Now, let's go.

Uugh, it's that stubborn old man...!

Well, if it isn't the fake magician.

What do you mean, fake!? My magic is real!!

Master! Wasn't the existence of magicians supposed to be a secret?

Be quiet, Shallie. Listen up! Alchemy is what should be called "fake" magic!

Alchemy is a respectable field of science. There's no mystery behind it, everything can be explained. Even the phenomenon of your so-called magic causes can be explained through reason.

I... I borrow the power of natural spirits... Ugh, you're pissing me off! Let's duel!

Uumm! Please don't do that on the ship!

Yeah! I don't want to die yet!

The village goddess

But... Can we really take it?

No, we can't! You can't just take it on your own.

Hey! Our goddess! What are you doing to her!?

Waaah!

I told you...

Helloooo ladies. What are you doing?

You're Reyfer, right?

Yep, the skilled treasure hunter. So, what're you doing?

Um... We need this automaton...

Oh, well, okay, you guys can just take it.

What? B-but?

It's okay, right?

Of course it is...! If you say so...

There ya go.

Reyfer... It looks like the villagers really trust you.

Less me, more Harry. He was throwing a lot of money around when we first got to the village. Just goes to show what you can get away with when you're loaded.

Whaaat...? That doesn't seem right...

Ahaha, I guess.

If you don't mind my asking, what are you gonna use it for?

It's kinda hard to explain... We think this thing is part of a key that opens up an ancient ruin.

An automaton being a key? I've never heard of that.

It's a part of an ancient alchemy system.

Oh. Huh... Learn stuff every day. Well, I'm sure smart girls like you will put it to good use. By the way, if you find yourself on the eastern continent again, why don't both of you, Harry, and myself do some treasure hunting?

Sounds...good!

Yeah, see you later!

You take care now.

Ancient song

Yes, most likely. Let's go. I want to start the experiments.

I wonder what will happen... I probably shouldn't be, but, I'm really excited!

By the way, Keith.

What?

Why is all of this around Stellard? The number of ruins, the automatons, the Castle of Mirages... Why are so many things near the city?

The Stellard area, in the distant past, was likely a sort of hub of alchemy research. The scale of the ruins in this area is remarkable, and there's likely even more we don't--

Wait a minute...! I'm going, too!

Al? Why?

Because I'm worried about my Odetta, that's why!

...I see no problem with it. Let's keep going.

That's the last one...!

Ahh... Don't treat Odetta so roughly... You aren't doing anything dangerous that could harm her, right??

...It should start now. That is... If my theory is correct.

Music: Automata Song

...Ahh...

Wow, they're really singing! I didn't know it'd come together in an acutal song when all of them are together!

Lotte...! The Gate!

What...? What is this?!

Let's go. The truth is in there.

I-I didn't think Odetta had so much power... I really do love you, Odetta.

What about him?

Leave him. He won't be any use inside anyway.

It's not that dangerous out here, so he should be fine.

...I guess so...

This is a large-scale teleportation device. We'll have to return to the ship to make it through. Let's go.

Odetta!!!

Kortes?

I was just thinking about how our ship is able to travel underground like this.

It's really amazing!

Where's this coming from all of a sudden?

...Well.. There's nothing in Lugion Village. It's like time itself has frozen in place there. Yet, we have a ship like this. Don't you think that's strange?

What's wrong with that?

Even Stellard doesn't have a ship like this. I just thought it's strange how we were able to build it.

It must have been destiny for someone in the village to travel to a far off land.

You're saying this ship was built by destiny? That's ridiculous. Well, I guess I can't rule that out for sure, after seeing this. If we're able to build a ship like this, maybe our homeland isn't so backwards after all...

(But if that's true, is it really okay that I'm using it? Or maybe...)

The world beneath

Music: In the Old Road

A mere shadow of the past civilization, I'm afraid. It's an example of the arrogance of mankind.

The...arrogance?

What else would you call it? Their deeds ruined the world above, so they come underground to continue their errors, without ever stopping to question if what they're doing is responsible for it. It's disgusting.

Um... Do you not like people, Keith?

Why do you ask?

Whenever you mention things, you always seem like you feel that way...

Human history is a record of the same errors over and over again. We're capable of learning, and thought, and yet everyone keeps making the same mistakes. You'll learn that after you've been around for a while, whether you want to or not. And it'll disgust you.

And yet, you don't quit being an alchemist or seeking the truth...

I wish to know the truth of this world... Not humanity.

The truth... Of the world...

Have you had enough pointless, idle chatter? We should keep moving.

This passage is severely damaged. It's not likely we'll be able to make much progress in this area. Even so, they must have used this area for transportation, so keep your eyes open.

Who knows what amazing things we can find from the past...

An analysis shows this ruin goes further, but the path is currently blocked by debris.

It's no use, then. Let's continue exploring where we can.

That looks like the same kind of device that brought the ship here...

It doesn't look like we can bring the ship with us, though. I sure hope we can come back from wherever this will take us...

Evergreen garden

Music: Primordial

Aaah! What was that?!

What is this place...? It doesn't look like the surface, but there're so many plants...

We've been teleported to another area by a device left in the ruins... It's an underground herbal garden.

Herbal garden? These are all herbs?

Not all of them, exactly... Though there are signs of artificial civilization.

So you said we were teleported, but... Where are we?

By the coordinates, we're to the southeast of Faav Village on the eastern continent.

We came this far in just an instant?!

The water is so pretty... I didn't know something like this could exist...

This region isn't the only area places like this exist.

Yes. They're at many important locations. Plants were important for discovering the source of life.

The source of life?

Alchemy was created to pursue these things.

I didn't know...

Plants require earth, water, and the appropriate atmosphere.

Water, air, and earth? What are things like that called again?

The four elements? I see... Plants would represent all of them.

No, they represent all of them... Fire is heat, and heat drives all life forms.

Ugh, this is too hard. I don't get it.

Ohh, good answer Lotte! That makes it way easier to understand.

Heh... I guess. I didn't really get the complicated stuff...

Facilities like this are said to raise exceptional plants.

Exceptional...? Then is the Heaven's Vine one of them...?!

Wow... If that's true, alchemy is a truly wonderful, mysterious power.

Wonderful?! Hah! Don't make me laugh. Ancient, powerful alchemy was forbidden. There's quite a bit of evidence.

Forbidden power...?

A Dunkelheit! I've heard these could be found in other regions, but an incredibly rare ingredient like this...!

Whoa! Can you imagine what we can make with this?

The ancient library

Is this... A laboratory?

Odelia, can you verify these documents?

Yes, sir. This is a research center like the ones in other regions, and these documents are research data. There's control data that appears to be for water purification devices tied to various regions... As well as data about the manufacture of artificial life forms.

I knew it... Part of the reason why the ocean in this region is now called the Dusk Sea.

I don't understand...

The purification device here turned sea water and other sources into fresh water before distributing it.

Huh? 'Sea' water? Fresh water?

Settlements like Stellard that are ground level, with plentiful water, have a relay version of this device.

I see... But if there was such a device, why would there be a drought...?

There seems to be a problem with this device. It's using much more sea water than the natural cycle and replenish. The fault comes from people thinking that sea water is limitless.

But, while the Lord of Water was in better health, she managed to keep the issue in check.

What? So the Lord of Water was originally a friend of humanity?

That's a fair guess... But I don't know the truth for sure. But the time when this device started to emit contamination, and the time when the droughts started, are different. So, they kept it going as it was spewing pollutants.

That's why they borrowed the Lord of Water's power...

Yes. But the conflicts between humans and their reckless cultivation continues to contaminate the oceans. That's most likely when the Lord of Water abandoned humanity.

It lost its strength, and the ocean, among other water sources couldn't keep up with the rate of intake. That's probably the immediate cause of the droughts.

So that's what happened.

Well... What will you do, now?

And what would you do if that completely stopped the distribution of water?

What?

The thing continues to take in what little water remains. If you leave it, the water will go dry eventually, and it will keep spitting out pollutants. But not right away. if you stop it, the natural cycle might help it recover eventually. But the chances are low. Also, even if it did, it would take an unbelievable amount of time for the water sources to go back to normal.

...But... We might have to accept that as the result.

Yeah... Though, nature is pretty resilient, I'm sure it'll bounce back quickly. The Lord of Water lent Master her strength, and these plants are doing so well, too...! Even if it's not during our lifetimes, I think nature would return to life.

Do whatever you want, you're free to believe what you please.

What do you think will happen?

Asking my opinion won't change anything. Make up your mind and act on it.

...Lotte, let's go back to Stellard first... We can't decide this on our own.

Yeah... We need to talk with Raoul and Mr. Perriend and have everyone decide.

It looks like the herb garden goes deeper in...

We're not going to be able to bring the ship here. I'll return to the ship now. You can explore further if you like.

Hey...what's that over there?

Truth

What the... Stera! Look at this!

Linca?

You think so too? She looks exactly the same, right?

Yeah... Like a twin! But why?

Whaa...? Then that means Linca was born here?

I don't know... But this could be the part of the darkness behind alchemy that Keith was talking about. Don't you remember the books about artificial life forms in the lab?

Artificial...? Then Linca is...

...We might want to tell Linca about this.

All...this...treasure!!

But... What exactly is it? A mysterious item that I don't understand...

T-that's true...

Yeah, good idea. Keith usually knows a lot about these kinds of things... We should be getting back, too.

Abundant City of Water

Yes.

We think we should stop that purification device. At this rate, all water sources will end up dry, like the Dusk Sea...

What would happen to the city if you shut it down?

It would no longer be an oasis. The water would drop to incomparable levels.

Still, at this rate, the water in all the towns, not just Stellard, will go dry. That's why...

Sounds like it's decided. There's no room for argument... Go shut the device down.

...I don't like it.

...What?

As a city of water, Stellard has great influence over the settlements around it, and Central. If the water is lost, Stellard will lose its reputation.

Wait a minute, please tell me you're not trying to save face at a time like this, chairman. Now's the time to think about water everywhere, not just in our own town.

Saving face... I guess I can't help that you'd feel that way. I just want to protect the city's honor and prosperity.

There was no guess to why people gathered here with its water. It's essential for agriculture, after all. Settlements started dotting the area in pursuit of the water, and Stellard grew as a city. It became a hub for commerce and production, and developed quickly. But other than Stellard, the region wasn't as abundant with water sources...

It wasn't the disparity you see in Stellard. Those with water survived, those without... People cannot survive without water. That's why Stellard started using its water supply control system to manage the water. It was to distribute it to the places that need it, and prevent wasting it That's how the city continued to protect the water for the region.

If we can't control the water, conflicts will start happening again. And mostly, Stellard is hope for people suffering from lack of water. If the water here disappears, the hope will disappear from everyone in the region. I can't agree about shutting down the device...

Still, chairman...

I know. There's no other way. I just don't want to see the city wither away... Do whatever you like.

...Perriend. I'm sorry.

It'll be okay, Perriend, this town is really strong! Even without water, Stellard will still be Stellard!

...Of course. Have you determined a way to get to the control device?

No. The only route we've found is blocked by debris. I'm currently looking into an alternate solution, but it will take time.

I see... Let me know when you go, so I can begin preparing for the change. Just make sure you're sure of your decision.

...Thanks, Mr. Perriend.

Oh, Harry...

Hello! Are you two here to see Mr. Perriend? Quite admirable! You all could learn a great deal!

And you are...?

Harry Olson, chairman of the Harry Company.

Harry Company? I've never heard of it...

Naturally! It is much further away than Central, after all. I've come here to introduce myself. Please accept this book as a sign of friendship. My work has been praised far and wide, in many different fields.

..."From the Wilderness"...? I see...

The more I see of this city, the more magnificent it becomes! Your water system is amazing, and such prosperity!

Well... We are pretty proud of our water purification system. It's our trump card against the Dusk.

I see! How interesting! This is something I'd like to write about--inform the entire world... No! That might end up exposing an important secret treasure of Stellard, and sully it in some way...

That doesn't matter. Treasure always shines brightly, regardless of how well-known it becomes. Mr. Olson, was it? I greet you as a fellow company chairman.

Mr. Perriend, I thought you would say something like that!

Anyway, why don't you tell me more about your journeys, Mr. Olson?

Th-They're getting along...!?

This may be rude to say, but... I'm quite surprised as well.

...Hey, you two.

Hello, young ladies! How are you?

Um, we thought it was odd to see you two together...

Me and him? Well you see, Raoul might be the boss now, but when he was young we would always do crazy things together!

Wow, I didn't know!

C'mon now, what do you mean when I was young? Don't treat me like an old man.

When a treasure hunter decides to settle down, he's officially an old man.

...Well, that's frustrating, but I can't really deny it.

Heh heh, so you finally accept it...

Poor guy.

Anyway, back to the point. Well, Raoul? Wanna leave the Union to the younger folks for a while to partner up with me, like we used to?

That's a tempting offer...

Right?

...But unfortunately, I can't. I still can't leave the Union to others.

I knew you'd say that. That's why you're an old man!

Reyfer... You don't need to go that far...

Sure, but you're buying the drinks.

Yeah, I'll buy you as much as you want.

These two seem really similar...

They look completely different... But they seem to be really good friends.

It would be nice to accept some jobs, but Raoul might be busy for a while. Let's go see what Miruca and Keith are doing.

Hello, Miruca!

Huh?

Jurie...?

...What? Is there a problem if my sister's here?

No, it was just, ahh, a little surprising, that's all. But still...

I've wanted to try writing a book for a while now... This place is pretty quiet, and I can help with the shop too.

A book... That sounds exciting!

What are you writing about?

The places I've traveled to up until now. I want to make it something kids can enjoy, but... That's really hard.

I'm sure you'll be able to write a wonderful story, Jurie!

Looks like there're some high expectations. You'd better not write anything weird.

...This is a lot of responsibility.

...

(Miruca's smiling...)

Did you two have business here?

No...not really. We can come back later.

I am a librarian at a facility known as the Zweiteturm. I am still gathering and sorting information in that capacity.

Huh, that sounds like work where you'd really need to use your head. Pretty awesome.

There's no question when it comes to the assigned duty of an automaton. We have been optimized for our roles. However, some automatons exist that can perform roles beyond their assigned duties. One, for instance, became an adoptive mother and housekeeper after being released from her duties.

It sounds like automatons can do anything...!

Yes, top class automatons must be capable of functioning in any capacity to be categorized as such. Therefore I decided to become the assistant to a researcher seeking the truth of the world. I am a top class automaton, after all. I cannot allow other automatons to surpass my capabilities.

Can you...fight, too?

...I do have some self-defense mechanisms, but my abilities are limited compared to 10 years ago. Since 7 years ago, I have traveled with my master.

Her abilities were exceptional, but now, she is not capable of much. It's unfortunate.

I wish to be of service in any way I can to my master.

You've got a lot of enthusiasm, Odelia...!

By the way, master.

...What?

Perhaps we should have some tea? I've become tired of speaking. Also, I would like to have some fine sweets.

...She'd be "top class" if she didn't act like this.

Ahaha, but she really is like a human. I think that's amazing...

She sure eats a lot, though...

Yeah, I don't even know how she fits in all in...

Wait! I just thought of something!

Huh!?

...

...It's a tool that was used for alchemy in the past.

Then that means it's valuable...?

We really have no way to utilize that technology. It's basically useless. Lost technology like this is uncountable.

I see... (I'd never seen it before, so I thought it might be something rare...)

It's okay. What do you need?

There's something we wanted to tell you...

Someone who looks just like me...

Could that mean...

Yes. We came here to ask if you wanted to go see for yourself...

... No. Going to see my origins won't change what already happened. I'll pass.

Whaat!? But it seemed like a really important place, don't you think you should at least see it!?

Is this really okay?

To tell the truth, I already had the feeling that my sisters and I were created through unnatural means. I have memories of escaping from a dark place while very young... I also remember my sisters being with me.

So the dark place was that underground facility...

I haven't seen it for myself so I can't be sure, but that's likely it. I didn't know about the existence of artificial lifeforms, so I believe I had escaped from a military institution.

The Linca in Colseit said that she met Linca number three, and that her personality was completely different. But she still seemed to think that she was her long lost sister.

I don't know how my sisters feel. But I for one don't really care to know the truth. ...My life right now is everything to me. I have no need to change that.

Ms. Linca...

I still have mixed feelings about wanting to know, and not wanting to know. Who am I, and why was I created?

...That reminds me, Keith said something to me once...

I can understand why Keith has such mixed feelings toward alchemy...

...But still, I'm glad to have met you, Ms. Linca. You helped me so many times, while I was still getting used to Mr. Perriend's behavior...

It's true that the chairman's behavior can cause misunderstandings...

Hahh, cleaning duty every day... I want to do something that's more significant!

"Significant"?

Uh, let's see... I mean, you know... An amazing, wonderful thing that people will praise you for... But more importantly...! What's your dream, Miruca? ...I'm guessing it was to become a great alchemist. You studied in Central, and you have piles of work requests... It's like you're already living the dream! Uu, I'm jealous...!

It doesn't feel like it to me.

It's great! You're an elite alchemist with a Central style atelier. How cool is that?

...How about you go wash your face or something and wake up?

Huh, where are you going?

I'm going home.

What!? All of a sudden like that!?

Huh... I wonder what's got into Miruca today...

Welcome.

Sorry for coming by unannounced... Am I interrupting something?

Not at all. I had some free time...

That's good...

So what can I do for you today? Need something Imbued?

Oh... Actually I wanted to talk.

Talk...? With me?

Yeah... About Lotte, actually.

Shal? What do you want to know?

Well, you've been friends since you were kids, right? I wanted to hear about her childhood.

Can't you ask her? ...Never mind. Shal was...pretty much like how she is now when she was young. She would always go out on adventures and try to make money for as long as I've known her. Jurie always said I should go with her to keep her out of trouble...

Hehe...

But one day, she didn't come back before dark. Her mom was getting Jurie and some other hunters to look for her, but it was getting dark. ...And then Shal came back crying, after getting lost.

Hehe, sounds just like Lotte...

She's been an airhead for as long as I can remember.

I'm a little jealous.

...Of being an airhead?

Not that. Where I grew up, there weren't any kids my age around... I was always alone. You and Lotte know a lot about each other since you grew up together, right? I just really like that thought...

It's different now... I haven't had time to see her much lately, and I don't think we get along as well as we did.

I don't think that's true...

It's fine. It's not my business what Shal chooses to do without me.

Now that we know the true nature of the Lincas, I'm reminded of someone speculating in the Ayesha thread that the Lincas were homunculi. Not exactly, but if you choose to define homunculi as "artificial lifeforms", then congrats whoever that was, you turned out to be right. It's a cool little sidequest that has a nice resolution to it.

Also, Jesus Christ this update drove me nuts finishing it. Mediafire was screwing up more than usual, so it took me like 40+ minutes to upload all the songs and get them linked, because it just would not cooperate. And, not to beat an old drum, but I'm just kinda wanting this thread to be over. But, we're getting to an exciting part of the game now that the extraneous scenes are winding down in a big way, and there's a short event with Solle next update that summons all the boss monsters around the world map. You can start hunting them for the super properties to start making the best stuff.

In particular, the Silver Dragon at the Geofront. This is a fairly hard fight, but certainly doable with the party's current equipment. Kick the crap out of it (make sure it doesn't transform, because like that one dragon in Ayesha, it'll transform into a much more powerful lizard if a certain amount of turns go by), get the stuff, then go back and beat it again. Now, the reason you want to do this around this point in the game is there a boss that I should be getting to in a couple updates (in Chapter 10), that you only get one chance at beating. It won't even give you a game over if you lose (yes, this game does have game overs, but only if you lose at certain story-important bosses, and even some extra ones for some reason), it just runs off and you never get the chance to fight it again. I mean, there's certainly not much point to winning, but I shall.

As a sidenote, there is a neat little Easter egg in the scene before the fight if you have one of Stera's exclusive items in your Search Equipment. You can't get this different scene as Lotte unless you're on a New Game+ from a Stera playthrough which did have that item.

Still an update behind but you had two lines from Lotte, and I think one should have been Stera

lp still cool by the way, this is making me want to go back and finish my playthrough

I'm glad you mentioned the Silver Dragon, because I didn't know it could transform and got the poo poo kicked out of me.
Use your Ultimates, kids.

I'm glad they're talking about the aftereffects of shutting down the machine. Even if the game is planning to shonen its way through this problem.
These games are really weird because they have really smart writing but they take a long time to get to it.

You know, playing this game with both playthroughs back to back, I'm surprised how few exclusive scenes Stera has. Nady's illness is a major subplot of Lotte's, but is barely mentioned on Stera's side (after the scene where Stera and Lotte ask about Keith with the Corporation, Lotte even gets a short extension to that scene). Lotte also gets a short subplot with Miruca that will be started and concluded next update. She also has the subplot with learning about alchemy from Wilbell that you hardly see any of on Stera's side.

Meanwhile, Stera gets some scenes with Teo, Kortes, Miruca and Jurie, and maybe one exclusive scene with Wilbell. I won't speculate as to why Gust went that route, but it is curious how the alchemist with the more traditional Atelier bent is by and large shafted out of a more important exclusive role.

I went with Lotte, and she does have a ridiculous number of scenes. As in, she nearly has a scene in every single part of Stellard with every team mate.
One thing I have noticed is that I'm not at 100 Friendship with Kortes or Jurie, even though I've hit it with everyone else. Does Stera get this problem with Wilbell and Miruca?

Friendship points, I have no idea how they work. It has something to do based on their party listing, like Escha had, but not doing any adventuring at all, Keith's friendship jumped like 45 points on my most recent session. So, I am not ashamed to say I have no idea at all what makes it go up.

Well, the scenes definitely have something to do with it, I went up a huge amount with Keith after seeing most of his scenes. Adventuring I have no idea about. I had Jurie on my front row for three areas and I don't think I saw any improvement.

Looking at the friendship values for my Stera game, it does seem the opposite team (Miruca / Wilbell for Stera, Jurie / Kortes for Lotte) does lag behind the "neutral" party members (Homura, Keith, Escha, and Solle). However, this does not apply to Stera / Lotte, who can easily reach 100 (and in fact, that's one of the requirements of the True Ending). My Lotte game would bear this out, as Wilbell is at 100 and Miruca is 97, which is a completely insubstantial difference. However, for Stera's game at least, Wilbell is at 81 and Miruca at 74. So, they do lag behind a bit, but it's not particularly significant unless you keep them out of your active party the whole game or something.

For friendship values, the True Ending notwithstanding, they seem to affect when a character's events will show up, but far more importantly, how quickly their support gauge goes up in battle. Higher values are better, of course.

Seriously? Does the game ever mention this?

No, but at least it's better than Escha's system of completely mysterious friendship values :v:

Chapter 9 Free Roam is even worse vis-à-vis exclusive scenes. It is really weird how many exclusive scenes Lotte has. I must have forgotten how much she had.

Part XXI: The Flying Side of the Youthful Wish

Raoul looks serious... I wonder what they're talking about?

Hmm, Raoul is quite the tough customer.

What happened?

Business here is starting to slow down, so I was thinking about trying my luck somewhere else close by... But he scolded me and said that crossing the Dusk Sea on foot was too dangerous.

Of course it is! It's even more dangerous to go alone...

I thought I'd get by somehow...

No, no, that's impossible, just no! I'll object to that too!

Don't worry, Raoul already gave me a tongue lashing. I won't push my luck! There're a lot of nice people in this city... But that's kind of inconvenient.

(I wonder if she's planning to leave Stellard already... We only got to know each other...)

I'm sure I'll figure something out, but I need to start making sales. It's tough making money out there these days. Maybe I should take some Union jobs... Still, it's pretty great to take advantage of that kindness to make money! Oops, did I say advantage? ...Let's just keep this a secret between us, okay? Anyway, I need to get to work on getting new items. Please feel free to visit anytime!

Hmm, she's pretty tough... Maybe I could learn something from her?

Solle. Give shiny.

Hm? Again? I suppose I can't help it.

When feeling down. This is good. ...

Homura, is something the matter...?

Today. Wind. Is just strange.

It seems knowing homunculi were artificial lifeforms created by humans as experiments is bothering him.

I...see... Hey, Homura... You're still yourself, you know...?

...I give. Shiny.

... (I don't know what to say...)

...Solle. Your shiny. Really good.

Thank you...

...

Solle. Reason. I'm different. From others. Because. Was made. That way?

...I don't think that's something you need to worry over. You'll always be yourself.

...Shiny. Good.

... By the way, there's something I needed to tell you. There've been sightings of terribly powerful sea monsters in Various parts of the Dusk Sea.

Various parts?!

Oh, you'll be fine. Still, you should be careful when doing your investigations.

Solle. Shallies. Sudden, but... Busy tomorrow?

Huh? Is something happening?

Well. Tomorrow. My funeral. Please come.

Wait... Your FUNERAL!? Solle, what does this mean!?

...Oh, it's time for that. I had completely forgotten.

Solle! You don't need to be so cold at a time like this...!

Please settle down. Homura's funeral isn't something that can be avoided...

Very important.

I know it's important, but...

...Shallies. Come with?

Sure, Homhom!

Do you want to go outside?

No. Just walk. Walk is like. Shiny.

Sounds good!

Hello, young ladies. Raoul's been sighing all day. Do you know why?

Could it be...?

Yes, it has to be. No questions.

Yes. That.

"That"? So you have an idea?

Yeah... But I don't know if we can talk about it?

Could affect. Man's honor. Pride.

T-That might be true...

Oh, so it's a lady, then.

H-How did you know!? You can't tell anyone!

Whoa, I'm not trying to start rumors or anything. I just wanted to help my friend...

What should we do... Lotte?

Hmm, let's see...

Did you say Linca?

1 Please don't say you heard anything from us.

So what about Linca?

Well...

So this Linca seven just needs to know how he feels, right?

I don't think this is something you could just tell her for him...

I know that. What we need to do is call Linca seven and Raoul to the same place, then... Wait! There she is! We can't let our prey escape!

That doesn't quite sound right...

Hey there, Linca seven.

Wh-Where did the "seven" come from?!

Yo. Linca seven! Copied. My nickname.

So this is your fault, Homura... I was surprised for a moment. Anyway, do you have business with me?

Yeah, about that... You see... ...That guy... Linca... He likes... Uh...

...Huh?

...Wait, Homura does!?

ME!?

...What!?

Um... This is so sudden, I'm not prepared for this... Do you mind if we just start as friends?

Noooo! I'm such an idiot! drat it!

I think... This just got even more complicated than before...

Is that all?

Y-Yeah, I guess...

Not interested. In. Linca.

I know, little Homura, but I don't have much experience when it comes to things like this. Oh brother, maybe I should just stay out of it. I'll see you three later, okay?

Shallies. Coming to. Funeral tomorrow?

S-Sure...

Yeah...

Lotte, is it okay if I go back to the atelier now? I need to get started on more synthesis.

Sure. I wasn't going to do much today... I'll see you later!

Hm...I wonder why she's in a good mood today?

I wonder what they taste like... Can't wait! Guided by the delicious smell of sweets, Shallotte makes her grand entrance!

Oh, you're here. I suppose you want to get started, but...

Yes! I can't wait!

No, I'm sorry for making you come out here, but... The sweets didn't turn out well.

What!? No way...!

Burned to a crisp. Probably because the oven was overheated.

I guess I'll be going... Bye, Solle...

Wait, there's still something I need you to do for me.

You don't have any sweets, what else is there to do...?

Is that all you see me good for? Actually, I have an important message for you. Your friend, Miruca Crotze... She's been selected to receive a scholarship in Central.

Wait, seriously...!?

Why would I lie about something like this?

Okay, I need to get going! I need to tell Miruca right away! Excuse me!

I was planning on asking her to deliver the news anyway... I suppose it worked out. Now, time for the sweets that did turn out well...

She's so talented, no matter how you look at it! Uu, I need to tell someone about this...! ...But first, Miruca! I can't wait to see the look of surprise on her face! Although she's pretty skeptical... She might not believe it... But when she finds out it's true, I'm sure she'll be over the moon. ...Yeah! I need to go tell her!

Be quiet.

Uhhgh, shut down so fast... But I just know you'll be surprised when you hear this!

...Okay, I get it, just tell me and get it over with.

Well, Solle told me some great news... You've been selected for a scholarship in Central!

...Oh.

What's with that reaction!? Is it because you don't believe me?

Not really.

Then why aren't you happy? Are you... Not happy about this?

Going to Central would mean leaving here for a long time. I wouldn't be able to see my sister, or Al... Or you. Even with all that...do you still want me to go to Central?

Huh? ...Well, um, I guess it would get a little lonely here... But wasn't your dream to go to Central and become a great alchemist? That's why...

My dream... I wish it were that simple, Shal. I'm not sure what I want to do in the future... Could you let me think for a while? This is an important decision.

S-Sure... I'll see you later.

She didn't seem excited at all... But it's something I need to celebrate with her. First, a present... Maybe something alchemy related would be best? But I can't really make difficult things... Hmm. No, I shouldn't get intimidated so easily. I'm sure Miruca will be able to do even more complicated Imbuing afterwards... I can't lose. Alright, I'll definitely do this!

I want Miruca to become a great alchemist when she goes to Central...

Hard work is really important!! But... If I used the ingredients in here, eventually it would get empty... It could even happen sooner than I think...!? Wah! No, I don't want that to happen! The only thing left to do is keep stockpiling, so I'd never run out! Alright! I'll keep gathering even more! Yeah!

Shallie, is something wrong?

No! I'm gonna go out and gather some ingredients around town!

Be back for dinner.

Why are you asking that now, master? Of course I'm serious. Super serious! When you flew me to safety from that flock of viscious sheep... That's part of why I became your apprentice! You were so cool back then... I still remember it like it was yesterday!

Could you stop making such a big deal out of it? But now that you mention it... That's when we first met. At first I thought you were crazy or something, but you've been putting up with my nonsense too...

Huh? Did you say something?

A-ahem! Right, I have good news for you. Apparently there's a way for alchemists to fly, too.

What the WHAT!? Master Wilbell, are you serious!?

Well, it's just something I heard about. You should ask an alchemist to tell you more. ...Sorry I don't know more.

...

Master! Thank you so much! I'll try asking around!!

Sure. I'm glad you're happy. I've done what I can, as your master! The rest is up to you!

Alright, I'm getting excited now! Let's go get more information! Alchemists in town... There's Stera, Keith, and Escha. Oh, and Miruca, but I don't know if she would know how to work with the kind of alchemy I do...

Hm... This might not be much use, but... Do you remember the item you made to restore flight to this ship? The Gravistone is capable of generating flight, but the ability of whatever you attach the Gravistone to fly depends on the size. If you made something small, you could fly with that.

A Gravistone!? So this is what was powering this ship! Wait, I'm surprised Gravistones could even be used that way! This is a huge discovery!

Gravistones as a power source was invented during my father's time. An improved form is in this ship. Was this useful for you, Shallie?

Yeah, yeah! It was really helpful! I just thought of something great!!

That's good, Shallie... I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Ehehe. Flying has been my dream ever since meeting my master.

I think you'd look... Nom... Really cool while flying!

Go, fight! I'll do my best! ...By the way, Shallie, this isn't a big deal, but...

...Hm, what?

You really seem to like meat...

Yes. Meat is delicious.

S-sure. That's fine. Anyway, thanks! I hope you like what I figure out!

Haha... I haven't eaten meat for a long time, so I think I'll stay here for a while... Teo, do we have any more meat?

Of course.

I am thinking! Really hard! But then I started thinking about the huge number of problems too!

...

I figured getting some advice from a really smart experienced person would get better results!

...So how do you desire to fly? Ride on or in something? Maybe holding onto something, or simply move your body?

Huh? Um...

Riding in something is simple, with a vehicle like a Sand Ship. Holding onto something would need a strong grip...

I'd probably get tired and fall...

Even if you don't fall, there's still the danger of death by suffocation.

Keith, stop! I don't even want to think about something so dangerous!

...

I'm sorry, I got a little carried away... I'll think seriously, so please stop giving me that scary look! Anyway, what kind of do I want it to be...

Hmm... So simply moving your body itself is out?

...

Alright! This was super helpful, Keith! It's great to have a capable superior around!

...Since when am I your superior?

Heh heh, don't worry about the details! Anyway, thanks Keith!

Hm? Al...? What could have happened? What's wrong, Al?

Oh, Shallie... Father scolded me again today.

Oh yeah, Mr. Perriend is really strict... Why'd he scold you?

The same old complaint... That I need to "be more serious as the successor to the Corporation"... Hahh...

I can kind of understand where Mr. Perriend is coming from...

Are you siding with my father!?

N-No, that's not really what I meant, ahaha...!

But even more painful than the scolding is the fact that he's deciding my future for me.

What's your dream for your future, anyway?

...I want to study ancient civilization. Although I'm sure father would refuse that outright.

(Huh, he's actually got a pretty serious dream. That's unexpected.)

I've always been fascinated with it. An advanced civilization, lost to time... How did they live...?

Oh right! Automatons were created during that time, too.

So it seems. Everything about them is shrouded in mystery. More compelling than any book or artifact...

Aaand it all leads back to her... And here I was almost touched for a moment. But Al, when Perriend gets too old to lead the Corporation and leaves it to you, couldn't you just do whatever you want?

I'm sure if father left the Corporation to me, he would expect me to run it. I don't want to let him down when it comes to that, but I'm just not interested in it at all. I don't know what to do...

It does seem pretty complicated... Maybe Linca could do it?

Oh, hello Miruca!

I didn't make you wait, did I?

No, I just got here too!

If it isn't Stera and Miruca... Are you two going somewhere together?

Yes. We had plans to visit Escha's shop.

Escha's place, huh... I wonder if she has anything tasty?

I think so. I wanted to get Homura a yummy snack, too.

Oh, that's nice of you! Maybe I should come along.

Okay then, let's go.

Alright!

I changed my mind. Could you two go instead?

Huh...? Miruca...?

What are you talking about? Let's get going!

...What?

...I know I'm just getting in the way.

What's that supposed to mean!? Miruca! Wait!

She's gone...

Mirucaaa!

Let's try checking over there next...

Music: The Twilight and the Hourglass

Sheesh, what happened, Miruca? You're acting so weird!

...Why'd you come after me? You two should just go along yourselves. Sorry about getting in the way until now. ...

...Miruca?

I... Kind of understand how Miruca feels.

Huh...?

You and Miruca have a lot of memories together, right? I'm just...really jealous. And it's frustrating.

Really...?

Yes, just a little. Miruca told me about some of the times you spent together. I feel like she showed me something really important... It made me happy. That's why I think it's our turn to talk to Miruca about the things we've done. Miruca... Do you want to hear?

...

So that's why... Sorry, Miruca! I really like you and Stera... You're both really important to me... That's why... Um...

What's with you... Shal... I'm sorry too. I don't mind if it's over tea. You don't mind telling me what you two have been up to, do you?

Miruca...! Yeah, of course! I wonder where we should start?

Lotte, settle down...

Ah? Welcome everyone, need anything?

Oh, Escha... Sorry for the commotion in front of your shop.

Ahaha, that's okay! Come on in! I just finished making some sweets, you should have some.

Wow... Thank you so much. I'll help make some tea.

Yay! C'mon, Miruca!

Miruca, do you have a second? Shallies, why don't you get started on the tea?

Sure!

Me...?

Friends are like apple tarts and chocolate cakes, you know?

...What?

If you like them both, there's no need to choose between them!

...I'm not sure that's the best way to put it.

If you think of anything, please, tell me! Don't hold back! No need to hide anything!

Ahaha... I don't really intend to hide anything! Let's see... This might work...

Whoaa! An engine using alchemy? Central's pretty amazing!

Using this as a base, we built an airship engine at the branch I used to work at...

I see... This looks pretty useful...

It puts out too much power like this, and it's dangerous. You need to tune it properly.

Alright, I'm getting even more excited about this! Thanks, Escha!

That's the spirit, Shallie! Do your best!

You seem to be in a good mood.

Yeah, but I'm thinking right now.

Hehe, well then make sure to focus, my future grand alchemist ♪

Hmm... I'm trying to think of a plan, but it's harder than expected... I don't remember the last time I thought this hard... Uu, my head hurts. I wonder if I have a fever... Waah, I can't think of anything! This is awful! I can't do anything at all!

Yes, reinforcements! Miruca, this is all I've ever wanted in my entire life!! Please, help me!!

...Huh?

I'm working on a flying machine, and I've asked all the other alchemists in Stellard, but I just can't think of how to put everything together! It's so frustrating!!

Calm down. I know how to put machines together.

Hmm, yes, ok, I see...

...And then set it like this. That should work out, roughly.

Whoa! That was easy to understand, Miruca! You're really smart!

I just put your thoughts onto paper. You understand things, but you're just bad at organizing your thoughts.

Uu, I can't tell if you're complimenting me or insulting me... But this should finish the recipe!

So... What are you going to do with something like this?

...Why?

Because it's cool! ...I wanted to see the same thing as I did back then.

...Back when?

Back when my master saved me, flying on her broom. Stellard was just a speck from up there! ...I thought the world was a super big lace, and didn't have anything to do with me. But I was wrong. If I can fly, the world will get smaller, and I could go anywhere! I could even bring my mom to Central...

...

At first, all I wanted was to satisfy myself. But when studying alchemy, I discovered more important things. It's really fun to work for the sake of others! I didn't understand that when I was picking up trash on the street... But I've got a ton of dreams now! If I don't accomplish this, I won't be able to move on to other things... This is just the first step.

That's rude! I'm growing too, you know!

...Do your best. I'm sure you can do it. Although I don't know about being the world's first.

Thanks, Miruca! I'll definitely complete this!

Now that that's done... Solle came by my atelier earlier, and said he wanted to speak to me about the scholarship. I'll be going to the Union now.

Oh! I'll come with you!

Are you sure...? It's not like you'll be going to Central.

You're my friend! No matter what you decide, I'll be there to support you.

I see...

Oh, hello Shallie... I see you're brought your friend along. I called you here because of your scholarship. We'd like to know if you have an answer for us.

...I'm grateful, but I refuse.

Huh!? What do you mean!? I'm so sorry Solle, I think she's just confused!

Shal, no. I'm serious. I don't need to go to Central to fulfill my dreams.

But, your dream...to study in Central...and become a great alchemist...

I was wrong. The fixation on Central wasn't really what I was feeling. I was just going on what I'd heard about Central, who all say it's where to go to improve and move up in the world. But after listening to Escha... I understood. Knowing what you really want to do for yourself is more important. I want to stay here. I'd rather work to help the people in the city, who're important to me, than people I don't know in Central.

Then we will offer this scholarship to another.

Yeah, please. ...What's wrong, Shal?

I'm moved.

...Huh?

Miruca, wow. I'm so moved! And inspired, and happy... I don't even know what to think...!

Shal, just stop it already.

...Master, may I make a request of them?

You don't need to ask for permission to make a request. That's your business.

Very well then, I shall make my request.

Huh... What's going on...?

Wh-What should we do if she makes some huge request...!?

Shallies, there's something I would like to ask of you. I'd like you to supply me with a variety of sweets.

S... Sweets!?

You mean like...candy?

Sweets have the power to relax a tired mind and heart. Please bring some to me.

I understand. Um... Keith?

What?

What kind of sweets do you like?

Why would you ask me? The one making the request is Odelia.

Wait, Ms. Odelia wasn't ordering sweets for you?!

Are you assuming automatons such as myself do not require food?

Wait, you DO?!

It's true that, from a purely functional perspective, I do not require food. However... I learned that consuming sweets can have an extremely soothing effect on the mind.

See? I have nothing to do with it. Just make her what she wants, please.

O-Okay, I understand.

Regardless, please fulfill my request.

Is that pipe something you really treasure, Keith?

It's nothing more than a normal pipe, really.

Hmm, I see. (He sure is treating it like it's really important though.)

If I may interject, that pipe was from...

It's just a pipe.

You should take a break too...

Huh, is that okay?

Constantly working will drain your energy faster than you realize...

(Keith always seems different when he smokes that pipe. What is it!?)

Was there a reason you two are still here?

Yes. I heard from Solle that various powerful monsters have started appearing around the Dusk Sea. We were about to head outside of town to do a little investigation.

I see. Are you sure you don't want to work on your flying device?

I'm fine, don't worry!

I see. Well then, let's be off.

So...dragons are here, too.

Huh? Did you say something?

Nothing. Let's take care of this and move on.

I can't believe it. We took down all three of the dragons that were in the Stellard region. There's nothing that can stop us!

That was nothing.

The Altar of Spirits, huh?

I thought there might a good chance some of the powerful monsters came to the altar.

Oh no... What's that shaking!?

This is... Something's coming towards the ship! Watch out!

Cyclonic storm

Yeah! We actually won!

Whew... Looks like we came through okay.

By a hair's breadth...

Dad!

The Dusk Sea has not only monsters like the one we fought, but also things you might call "legends".

Oh hm, that's kind of scary...

The monster's recent violence may be related to the droughts. We must exercise utmost caution.

Did you two want to keep going to the Altar of Spirits?

Nah, we should probably turn back. That dragon took nearly all of our supplies to beat.

Is that okay with you, Miss?

Of course.

...Oh.

...Miruca. Have you been eating well?

Don't worry, I'm fine.

...I see. ...Thanks for my equipment.

It's nothing. I wouldn't want you to get hurt...

...I'm more worried for you.

I can defend myself. ...I've got something to do. I'm leaving.

Hey, Miruca.

...

...What's with her? Bad mood?

...Jurie.

Ms. Linca, are you taking a break from work?

Yes. we've had so many visitors today. I'm a little tired...

Now that I think about it. Mr. perriend has it pretty tough too.

Although at first, I just thought he was a scary old man...

Hehe... I've never thought of the chairman as scary.

That reminds me, how and when did you two meet? ...And how do you know my mom?

It was a long time ago... I was still a child. It must have been soon after I escaped from the facility. I wandered into this city with nothing, but the chairman took me in and raised me. For a long time, I would watch Ms. Nady as she worked.

I see. My mom never told me anything about this.

I was sent to school, and once I reached a working age, I asked the chairman to allow me to repay my debt. He said he'd simply performed his responsibility as someone with wealth, but I still felt a need to repay him.

So that's why you became his secretary...

Yes. Ms. Nady taught me everything. I'm very happy to be able to work with the chairman.

Huh, I didn't know any of this before.

Anyway, I should get back to work. Excuse me.

Homura... Are you really dying!?

Was good life. Tinus Alexandros the 7th. Life ends. Returns to heaven. Shallies. Pray too. Shallies. Solle. Homura's friends...

Homura...! Why did you have to die!?

Homura...! You've come back to life!?

Welcome back.

Solle...what happened!? We saw Homura disappear!

Homunculi like Homura enter an eternal slumber at set intervals, before reviving. I was surprised, too.

...I didn't know... I was so shocked!

Not revive. Reincarnate.

The homunculi call it reincarnation.

Then... Does that mean homunculi don't die?

From our perspective. I guess it could be called immortality. From my research, new individuals are never born.

Solle. We are not. Immortal. Reborn. That means. Not Tinus Alexandros. The 7th. The 8th now!

Homura. Congratulations. Good funeral.

Yes, congratulations Homura.

I don't really understand... But I'm just glad Homura was reborn...

For homunculi, being seen off by their close friends is a very important thing.

Right. Harry. Wanted to attend. But not friend. Denied!

Harry. Hung around. Wanted to see. Any funeral.

Harry. Just nuisance.

Homura's friends. Our friends. All refused Harry.

I don't really get it, but I know I saw something really important...

Glad. We get along. From now too.

To do some commentary before I go to bed, let's start with Fran. Fran is an extremely difficult boss if you let it go on too long. Those stupid lava rocks it shoots up will drain your Burst Gauge, in and outside of Burst Mode, and do a hell of a lot of damage. Even with extremely good equipment (which I don't have at the moment), Fran is extremely hard to defeat once you've used up your first Burst Gauge and those lava rocks get deployed. For that reason, you need to smash almost all of his HP in that go. If he has more than 3000 HP after Burst Mode ends, I'd say your party is up poo poo creek. I honestly was not expecting to defeat such a powerful enemy with less than optimal equipment / items.

Now then, now that we've finished up Chapter 9, we're right on the verge of finishing the game. The start of Chapter 10 will give you your last assignment, which is to shut down the water control device. For that purpose, you have to head to the far end of Geofront to that path that was blocked by boulders. Follow that path for a bit and you'll end up in the final dungeon. However, once you've beaten the final boss, as I mentioned in the OP, the game is over, and gameplay will end upon returning to Stellard.

Now, after that scene at the start of Chapter 10, your leash is off completely, and you can do anything you want in the game. Defeat bosses, grind combat / alchemy experience, finish Life Tasks (even though there's no point to doing them all), whatever you want. As such, Part XXII, whenever it's ready, is going to be pretty different. I'll wrap up all the outstanding scenes (which, thankfully, there are not a lot of them left), and show you what traits I'm going to put on my ultimate equipment / how to make that ultimate equipment / items.

Now, I'll show you what I'm going to use, but as in all things Atelier, a lot of it is up to you. For armor, I would strongly advise Evolve Body, Draws Out Power, and HP Massive Gain. The first two will increase the base stats of your characters by 35% (cumulative), and HP Massive Gain will increase your HP count by 70, I believe.

Weapons, Persisting Attack, Transforming Attack, and Demon Soul (massively increases attack, at the cost of constant HP drain. With a super Elixir, this is hardly something that should bother you) or Expert Technique (skill power increase by 25%, but also a 25% reduction in MP cost) are very solid choices. The first two add significant damage to normal and skill attacks and provide massive benefit with no drawbacks.

Accessories are also really up to you, but everyone on the team should have a Brother Call. You can make Brother Calls starting at alchemy level 60, and they also happen to be the best alchemy level grinding item in the game, since ingredients are plenty and Brother Calls can be used to make Brother Calls. In any case, Brother Calls, like in Escha & Logy, add significantly to the support gauge and makes getting that critical 130%+ for Burst Mode much easier than normal, as well as adding some damage to normal supports and add more to the Burst Gauge than attacks without it. Second accessory is up to you, but choose something that has actual effects, not like Gunade Rings which just provide stat increases. It's just as well, though, because accessories are where super traits really shine. Super traits all have "Soul" in them, and they provide tons of different benefits. Stuff like KO insurance, skill power increases, resistance increases, extra damage, it goes on and on. Just pick the traits that you like best.

Now, as for funding these traits, you're really going to want a Traditional Soul. The presence of the Traditional Soul trait in a synthesis increases your PP count by 50 (with a maximum possible PP of 99). That's in addition to your alchemist's natural PP (should be hovering around 23-25 by this point in the game), and PP Frame Expansion will add a few more. Hunt the Silver Dragon again and again and you'll get it eventually. Once you do get it, spread that trait around like wildfire. Put it on Supplements, Medical Solutions, everything. The Phoenix of the Sea at the Altar of Spirits provides some pretty good traits too, but definitely not as consistently good as the Silver Dragon at Geofront. The one good thing it does, however, is that it provides like 4x the experience the Silver Dragon does. In-between the two of them, you can take a solidly mid-game team to late-game in a matter of hours. And the Phoenix is a fairly easy fight, because it won't attack for a long time, but the catch is...once it does start attacking, wave bye bye to your team.

Attack / healing items are a whole other thing, and I'll get around to those in due time. All in all, I figure we have about 2-3 regular updates left.

You say that, but in Eschatology at least you pretty much had to have 3 of about 5 weapon/armor choices or there was no way you were going to beat the Beast King (and True Flameu would still be pretty rough). Ben and I went into the postgame with "pretty good" stuff like 4-Heavens Attack/Defense and the stat-boosting Souls and all that and got absolutely destroyed.

And honestly, if you hadn't been on a dragon kiling spree and mentioned it was near the end of the game, I would've figured you were still halfway through. I get that they went away from the chapter breakpoints and discrete adventures because people were complaining about the time limit, but it makes it feel like little has actually happened. And Atelier writing has always been character vignettes > development, but here it just makes things feel even more stagnant. I dunno, maybe it's just subconscious and I never forgave them for putting Logy on the bus and that's coloring everything else, heh.

Anyway, good update. And I just now caught up, so vis a vis your post about this being the last Atelier LP; definitely understand why but they'll be missed. Thanks to you I've pretty much only played the ones I was pretty sure I'd like :v: , so it's been appreciated!

Maybe I'm just misremembering things but is this game shorter than the others in the Dusk series? It could be due to the speed and giant sizes of your updates but this game seems like it flew by quite a lot faster than the earlier ones. Am I way off here or is it a shorter game?

It definitely is shorter. E&L went up to 33 updates, and the average update size was about the same as this thread. My Stera playthrough is hovering around 25 hours, but that's before serious end-game trait grinding. Casual player I think could beat this game in about 25-30 hours, which is pretty short for a JRPG.

While Shallie lets you complete chapters incredibly quickly (especially if you prioritise completing the Life Goals instead of loving around like me), I feel like it passes a lot slower than say Ayesha, where I'm nearing the end of the final year.

Also, I found a bug in Shallie! After completing a Homura scene in the Union building, I was unable to leave through the door or talk to anyone. I had to leave using the shortcut menu, and couldn't use the Union until the next chapter. Very weird.

So, ever since Xmas morning my regular connection went to poo poo, forcing me to post this from my phone. Just posting to assure I'm still here, and work is being done on this thread. In fact, I'm just on the verge of finishing recording, and I beat the two hardest bosses on Despair.

Hey, I had to give them SOME chance of beating my ultimate equipment. Since I will pretty much be stuck inside today still without a regular connection, today will likely be the last recordings. Totally going to beat the last boss on NO HOPE, because he deserves the smallest chance of winning, too.

While Lotte objectively has more scenes than Stera by quite a wide margin, Stera is objectively the better of the two in gameplay. Two big reasons.

1. All of Stera's exclusive items that she gets the recipe for at level 70 are much better than anything Lotte gets. All of her powerful attacks items hit groups for a lot of damage, and Stera's Meteor is better than anything Lotte gets. The Mirage Talisman is Stera-story exclusive and is one of the best, if not THE best, accessory in the game.

2. Stera's alchemist ability, Synchronize, is vastly better than what Lotte gets. After Lotte and Stera make up in Chapter 7, the alchemist you play as gets an exclusive skill. Lotte gets a combination skill, where she can combine two attack items to get a different one. It's really nothing more than a novelty. Synchronize, on the other hand, uses any attack or healing item without costing a use. Very useful when you want to use a powerful item, don't want to expend a use, and has no downsides as opposed to normally using the item as far as I'm aware.

Just for the record, though, the alchemist skills can only be used in Burst.

Holy poo poo, that's an amazing skill! I'll be honest, I've only ever used Lotte's skill as a panic button when I was getting my rear end kicked and needed more damage output (which never really worked all that well).

Just finished reading through this. I'm not sure if it's the game or your presentation, but it's managed to hold my attention better than with your other Atelier LP's. I'm not sure if I actually finished reading the Escha & Logy one.

And one more miss, back in update V on page 2:

Part XXII: The Sweet Side of the Dynamic Festival

The last job

Everyone. We've received a message from Central.

We've been waiting!

What does it say?

They say it's both the jurisdiction and responsibility of Stellard to correct the ancient water device.

Vague words, as usual from Central.

Agreed, but, you're not one to talk.

Pireit, are you on Stellard or Central's side?

Of course I'm with Stellard. I have to look out for the people in this town.

Hah... That's my line...

Regardless of Central's wording, I can't imagine they wouldn't leave it to your best judgment on what to do about the device. Though, it doesn't sound like you have much of a choice about what to do.

Right... Anyway, Shallistera.

Yes?

I know you're not from around here, and I'm really sorry for involving you in our problems. But I want to ask for your help one more time. We need your strength.

No, don't worry about it. I'll save both my village and Stellard.

Haha, we're all counting on you!

What, nothing to say to me?!

Yeah? Wait... What's that supposed to mean?

Haha, I'm kidding. You've really changed! I'm sure you'll be someone who changes the entire town. ...I'm counting on you, too.

Thanks!

On another matter, can you bring Kortes down here? There's something I should speak to him and you two about.

Huh? Okay.

Thanks to you, we've received reports that citizens getting hurt has dropped dramatically.

...I see. That's good.

We're thankful for all the help, but... There's one concern I want to mention.

...Concern?

Yes. There's worry that the sudden drop in dragon populations could cause an effect on the ecosystem.

The ecosystem?

Dragons perch atop the natural world. Now that they're mostly gone, there could be some changes to the system.

Like what?

It's unclear. The ecology of dragons is not well understood. However, I doubt that nothing will happen.

Doesn't that mean we should just stop hunting dragons?

It won't be that easy. Ceasing the hunt will not cause dragon populations to return to normal immediately.

...So you're saying, after all this, it would have been better if we hadn't done it?

No, I'm not. This city was being terrorized by dragons, in a relatively large number of incidents. Those incidents should start declining rapidly now. This is undoubtedly a good thing. However... We also don't know what's going to happen moving forward. Nothing is certain when it comes to nature.

Then what should we do?

...

That's right. Let's leave the complicated stuff to Solle, and get back to our work.

...Yeah. There's nothing to worry about. We'll just take care of our own work.

I'll continue monitoring enviornments around Stellard and let you know if anything changes. By the way, I've found some locations of powerful monsters around the Dusk Sea. One of them has been found in the underground city.

Let's get going.

...Homura seems really depressed... I don't know what to do to cheer him up...

...The feelings of a homunculus... I had never even thought of that.

What's wrong, Odelia?

As an automaton, I'm a type of artificial lifeform as well.

...She seems to be annoyed.

R-really!?

You can understand how automatons feel!?

...Let's follow her. Come with me.

...And so I baked these this morning. Oh, Shallies! Come on over. Have some cookies! ...Back to the point, being human doesn't make someone better. You can't choose how you're born...

Well. That's true.

However, you can't deny that humans are our creators.

Yeah, but I think automatons and homunculi have plenty of aspects that are better than humans too. Anyway, there're still plenty of cookies, help yourselves!

...

I think humans created artificial lifeforms, searching for a chance that there's soemthing greater than humans... Although I don't know for sure what the people of the past civilization thought...

...Concerning these cookies, I think I would like them better if they were sweeter.

...Although. This is. Still good.

I don't really understand... But I'm glad they're smiling again...

No, don't worry about it. Let me know if I can help.

So cleaning is one of your fortes as well?

I am a first class automaton. As well as a librarian, few can match my cleaning abilities.

I see...

I could clean in your stead, if you'd like...

No, it's a good way for an old man like me to stay fit.

Cleaning is healthy...? I must tell my master about this at once! Master!

I think we'd see something even more funny if we followed Odelia...

That must be it. Let's take care of this.

Music: FJ: Fatal Blow

Well, that was pretty fun.

So, what's next?

We never did investigate the Altar of Spirits again... We were attacked by that dragon before we could arrive, then we decided to turn back.

So we're going back there, huh?

Yeah! I'm sure Central has great expectations for him, too.

...A person who others rely on? What do you think of someone like that?

Um, well... Hmm... Someone who can get work done, and is really smart...

And also an honest character... Maybe?

Do you want to be someone other people can rely on?

Um... I think it would be nice to validate people's expectations... Why?

You had an aura like that when you first got here.

Oh, yeah... You're right.

But my way of thinking changed a little. I think it's better to be someone who is reliable, rather than just doing the bare minimum.

Oooh, yeah!

...That is a good answer.

What about you, Solle? Do you have any plans of moving up in Central's organization?

No, I haven't given it much thought. There's still too much work to be done here in Stellard before I can think about my future.

Being a government worker might be harder than being an alchemist...

What kind of monster is this...?

Alright! I did it!

It seems there are more monsters around the Dusk Sea than I first thought...

...You mentioned there was an ancient alchemy facility in the herb garden, correct?

Um, yes... That's correct. It seems Linca and her sisters were born there, but they escaped from the facility at some point.

I see. Well, I would like to explore it personally. Let's head there next.

My memory processing is excellent. I never forget anything. Why do you ask?

I was just wondering what everyone we knew is doing now...

As long as they haven't passed away from anything forseen, they are likely living.

Okay, well, I know that but... Maybe it was my mistake asking an automaton about a matter of feelings.

Are you saying that you're remembering the past and you feel sentimental?

Agh! How did you know?

I'm different than I was in the past.

Ayesha is currently investigating another region.

What?!

You didn't know? Ayesha is master's apprentice.

I... I knew, but... I didn't know... It's weird, I feel happy knowing someone from back then is still the same. Is...her sister with her?

Yes, Nio is currently traveling with Ayesha.

The four of you together, huh?

Does that surprise you?

...I guess not. When I met Ayesha, I always knew we were going to travel different paths. There was just no room for an alchemist and a witch on either of our adventures. Still...

Do you wish to see her again?

Yeah... I do. It's been a long time since we traveled together, and I miss her a lot.

Sentimentalism at its finest.

So Keith's apprentice was a girl...

That's what you got from that?!

These are the alchemy devices. I see...

Ms. Linca said she didn't want to see these, but...

It can be difficult to face your origins as an artificial lifeform. It's hard for us humans to understand.

...

Are you alright, Homhom?

...Yes. Strong monster. Near!

I see it. Let's take care of this.

Whew! This is turning into good exercise.

You may be enjoying this hunting a bit too much...

Nah, this is still just a job. Anyway, Solle, do we have any more reports of monsters?

None that I can remember. It might be wise to return to Stellard for now.

Yeah... Phew.

I remember it when I see Solle. I never thought I'd see him here again.

Colseit branch. With no Solle. Worried.

Nah, they still have Logy. Even without Escha, he's pretty capable. Not as good as her, though.

Was Solle like that in Colseit too?

What do you mean, "like that"?

Um, super mechanical, loves sweets...

Repertoire. More known now.

I'm not really asking about his sweets....

Let's see. He does seem busier now, but he's enjoying his work more, too.

Solle learned much. From Escha.

Do you miss Colseit, Master?

I can't say I don't miss it, but I'm in training. I travel a lot. I end up really liking the towns I visit. Have you two ever heard of Vierzeberg?

No, I haven't...

Me neither.

Well, it was one of the first towns I started training in. Colseit was a lot smaller than Vierzeberg, and Harry was there as well. He was really famous back there. It's been a long time since I was training there... Still, I enjoy being on the road.

Me too.

I want to go to Colseit with everyone some day.

Ooh, me too! I want to visit lots of different towns!

We've certainly found a lot of valuable ingredients so far. I wonder what I should do with them. Drawing out power, amplfying effects...

What is it, Teo?

You've grown quite a bit. You could even say you're a fully qualified alchemist...

No way, I still have so much to learn...

Oh, give me a bit of credit... Take this.

A secret book handed down among village chiefs, entrusted to the head of the clan. For when you've proven yourself.

Teo... I don't know if I can accept this yet...

I spoke with your father before we left, young Miss.

You did!? What did he say?

He said he was proud of you coming so far on your own, and that the future of the village would be safe in your hands. He knew you wouldn't give up until you had saved the village from the drought. I know he would approve of you learning these recipes for now, so we can start to heal this world.

Father... Thank you. I'll do my best not to embarrass my father!

...What? I don't intend to answer any pointless questions.

(What's going on? There's so much tension...)

(Lotte... You're going to be seen!!)

Hey, you! I don't intend to put on a show for you.

...Ridiculous.

Do you want to use your knowledge and experience to further alchemy research in Central?

That's absurd. You're an official. I'm sure you're aware of my crimes?

Yes, I know. And I still want to ask you. I believe your experience outweighs those crimes.

That's an unusual attitude for an official. Also, why would I become involved in something so pointless? My opinions haven't changed. In fact, seeing my theory proven only increases my sense of an impending crisis.

And that justifies destruction of alchemy equipment? If you hadn't done that, then we might have found a solution already.

I don't care to justify anything I've done. Other peoples' opinions of my actions make no difference to me.

I see. I was simply curious if you've gained a shred of hope after seeing the actions of young alchemists.

Such pointless curiosity.

Hey Solle, why are monsters getting more active lately?

It's hard to say. It may be that time of year when wildlife naturally gets more aggressive, or it could be a consequence of the drought.

You mean, more monsters are coming out because they don't have enough water?

That's not a bad theory. If there's less water, there's more competition for limited resources. Of course, that shouldn't apply to slags.

Well, no matter what comes at us, we'll take care of it.

Yeah, I studied it a little... But I'm definitely not as skilled as you.

New and old alchemies share an origin, though one progressed with science, the other, tradition... Ridiculous.

Central entrusts dangerous technology to those who are underqualified.

This is why alchemy should be unified again, to eliminate the unworthy.

I don't know... They both seem really serious, though...

You two... Did you want something?

Ah! N-no, we were just going downstairs...

He gets upset when I treat him like that... I can't even massage his shoulders.

Oh, grandpa! Mind if I try?

...Huh?!

Grandpa, can you sit here and close your eyes for me?

Hm... Why?

As a thanks for everything, I'll rub your shoulders!

Ohh... That would be great. My shoulders are so tense from cleaning.

Alright, here goes!

Yes, it feels nice...

Maybe just a tad harder?

Okay, that sounds fine... We should be Oh! ...Getting back to Stellard soon...

Oh, hello Ms. Linca.

Yo. Linca seven.

I have documents from the chairman. Please check them over.

Thank you. I'm grateful that you're quick with your work.

Linca eight. Bad at paperwork. Right Solle?

...That's right. The Linca in Colseit excelled at combat, but her paperwork was quite poor. Even when we tried to teach her, her work never got done, and it was of poor quality when it was. She just doesn't have any talent for it.

Huh!? Solle, you know other Lincas... Yet you weren't surprised?

There's nothing strange. The Linca here just needs to be herself.

I translate. Solle's words. Linca seven. Different. From Linca eight. Makes her unique.

Homura, there's no need to...

I feel same. No problems.

...You're right. I'm grateful.

It doesn't matter how similar she looks to someone else. Ms. Linca will always be Ms. Linca.

Shallie, the Chairman wished to express his gratitude at the dangerous monster hunting you have been doing recently. He said you're performing a valuable service to Stellard by keeping such dangerous monsters away from the city.

Oh, that's good... I'm glad I can help.

What is it? Worried about something?

Remember before when you asked Keith to help with my mom's medicine? If we asked, maybe he could also help us improve our alchemy skills, too...

Maybe... But Keith is always talking about how he doesn't like people who don't think for themselves...

Oh, yeah... Still! Maybe he could just provide some guidance, or tell us a handy way to improve our alchemy!

He might agree to that. Maybe we should both ask...?

Alright, then, let's go talk to Keith!

We ARE serious! I need to learn more alchemy...

I feel the same as Stera, I want to know more about alchemy too!

...I have a general idea of the level of your skills ever since you fulfilled the request I sent to the Union. You may be skilled for your age, but from my perspective, you've barely advanced beyond the beginner level.

Uu, you might be right...

However, I do have an appreciation for talent. You've managed to come this far without an apprenticeship. I won't tell you much. You must prove yourselves with the results of your intention and determination.

...Does that mean you'll teach us alchemy, then!?

Thank you so much, we'll work really hard!

I don't need your gratitude. Complete the tasks I set forth for now. You must relearn the basics first.

Do you remember the device that sent us to the Herb Garden? The item I want you to make utilizes a similar technology as that. If you're able to make it, I will consider teaching you further.

You've been smoking too much, master.

It's true that quitting wouldn't affect my life much, but... It's good to have some luxuries. I'm sure you can sympathize with that. There's something that you can't seem to live without either.

A luxury... I suppose you mean my sweets. I agree completely.

There you have it. Could I ask something of you?

What do you need?

I'd like you to gather the herbs listed here. I don't mind if other varities are mixed in a little, so try to hurry.

These herbs... I've gathered them in the Dusk Sea. We'll be right back, Mr. Keith!

Sorry about that. I'll be more careful not to run out in the future.

Gah! What's this flavor!?

Whaaat!? Did I mix in something bad!?

...I can't smoke this! How awful...!!

Yes, this is the flavor... Oh, sorry about that. I didn't mean to say that what you brought is bad. It seems that I've grown accustomed to this medicinal herb mix, and can't use anything else...

(I guess he's trying to look after his health... That's unexpected.) If it's medicinal, what does it do?

Everything in this mix won't hurt you, even when inhaled... My apprentice kept complaining when I smoked tobacco... I've been using this herbal mix since then, so she stops pestering me about my health...

...It seems he's finally calmed down. Perhaps I should eat some sweets myself...

Should I make some tea?

I'll prepare some snacks!

...Well, I suppose a break like this is good once in a while, too.

Shallie, have you finished the sweets yet?

Oh crap, we forgot! We'll get to work right now!

Shallie, thank you very much for these variety of sweets.

There's so many, I figure you'll have to like at least one...

Very well then...

Um... Would you like some tea?

Oh right! I'm sure they would be better with something to drink!

... Thank you. However...

"However"...?

Unfortunately, the sweets you provided may be a little difficult to properly describe with a single bite.

Describe...?

Maybe she means they...weren't as good as she'd hoped?

Yes. The path of sweets is an arduous and noble path. I'd like to request something more magnificent next time.

Odelia is starting to sound a little like Keith...

She's strict...

Oh? ...It's said that top class automatons begin to resemble their masters. Perhaps that is your explanation.

This is how one should feel when one resolves to learn alchemy.

As a servant of my master, please understand that my expectations are similarly high.

Uu, what's going on here...

I feel like they're both mad at us... W-We'll work harder.

I await your next attempt.

And don't forget to continue practicing your alchemy. I have yet to see your results.

Ugh, Stera... Maybe we should retreat.

Y-Yeah!

Escha. You okay?

Oh, Homura... Is something wrong with Escha?

Symptom. Of not. Enough sweets. I know. That feeling.

There's even less fruit here than I imagined... I'm trying to get some more, but... At this rate, I won't be able to make enough sweets, and I'll waste away!

I don't really mind as long as I have meat... But there just isn't much fruit around.

Shallies! Please bring me any fruit you find!

That was fast! Wow, you found so much! Thank you, this is excellent! Hehehe, looks like it's time for me to get to work...!

You're making sweets? I look forward to them...!

Wait a second. Hmm... I know! I've got a great idea! Let's all make sweets together, and use them to gain favor with the people here in the city.

Huh? All of us?

Yeah! It'd be fun to get some people who are good at making sweets, and show them to everyone!

Yes, it sounds both fun and delicious!

I'd like to find at least 3 other people to help make sweets, if you could help find a few?...

We just need to find people to participate, right? Got it, we'll go ask!

Let me know once you've found enough people. I'm counting on you!

Now who should we ask...?

We should definitely ask Solle. I'm sure he'd love to make sweets for everyone.

Then there's Odelia. You know how serious she gets when it comes to sweets. Let's see... I guess it couldn't hurt to ask Miruca.

Miruca...?

Doesn't it sound fun? I think it's perfect for you, as someone who loves sweets... Do you wanna do it?

No, I don't.

I knew it! Of course you'd want-... Wait, wait?!

Why? Is there some sort of problem?

I only make sweets in order to de-stress, and as payment for the homunculi.

Whaaat... I wanted to try eating your sweets, Solle...

Solle. Don't say. Sad thing.

Hm, is something the matter?

I know. Your skill. For making sweets.

Don't miss chance. To show everyone. Your sweets. Enter. And win!

Whoa, Homhom's getting fired up! Yeah, tell him how it is!

...Hm. I hadn't considered the value of winning. This could add enough margin to make it worthwhile. Very well. Please tell Escha that I'll make my best sweets as a participant.

We understand! We'll go tell her!

Heh. Should be. More fun now.

Absolutely not.

Instant refusal!? You could at least think about it a little more.

I'm good at Imbuing, but I don't really like things like that.

...I see. I forgot about your extreme dislike of things you find bothersome.

How could you forget something like that?

Ehehe...

That's unfortunate. I kind of wanted to see Miruca making sweets.

I won't participate myself, but I can tell you about someone who will...

You know someone? I wonder who...?

Wahh! Jurie, don't sneak up behind people like that! You scared me.

Despite her appearances, my sister is unexpectedly good at cooking.

...Don't say "unexpectedly". "As you can see" would be better.

No, it really IS unexpected. But back to the point... Please, help with the fair!

I got it. I need to prepare my tools...

Um, Jurie. What do you mean by "tools"...?

Oooh...

That's fine! What matters is that we've got another participant!

Do you need something, Shallie?

Then does that mean you'll participate?

I require permission from Keithgriff, but my determination should be enough to get it.

Thanks! You seem really excited! I hope I get to see people enjoy your sweets!

As the sweets queen, I shall try all the sweets made by the other participants.

...What?

One cannot judge the flavor of sweets without eating them. And it's good manners to eat what's presented. Thus, all sweets belong to me. Master even mentioned my capacity for sweets seemed bottomless.

Um, are you even listening to us? Odelia...

Please accept my desire to participate. You cannot refuse.

Uuu, Odelia's acting different than normal, she's really scary...

It seems like she's misunderstood something... But she said she'll do it, so that's good enough!

So that's what she said.

Hmph... Well, it doesn't matter what she does in her free time. I don't mind.

Really?! Great!

Hmm? Yes, we found some people, but...

Really? That's great! Then I need to prepare for the fair... Can I get you two to lend me a hand, please?

Now? This is a little sudden...

You need to strike while the iron's hot! These things aren't fun if you want until the excitement's died off!

Uu, I guess we just need to get ready, then...

Yeah... Oh well, we'll just have to do our best!

I can't wait to show you what I can do today! Please, eat as much as you want!

Next, let's see what our other participants have to say...

I'm confident in my abilities to make the best sweets you've ever tasted...!

All your sweets belong to me! It matters not what kind they are, I'll enjoy eaeting them all equally.

Everyone seems so confident! I look forward to seeing the results.

Wait a minute. You've completely forgotten the crowd favorite!

Whoa, Solle! You're totally set to win this...

If I'm going to participate, I'm going to give it my all!

Solle. Do your best. Win. Win!

Solle... He's got so much passion for making sweets...!

Making sweets is the greatest joy in life... Be prepared to taste the best sweets you've ever had!

Grr... I won't lose!

I'm starting to sense a hint of something behind the sweetness...

It's getting pretty heated... I guess you could say they're having fun?...

Starting. To worry. But... Doesn't matter. If get sweets!

Final update of 2015 in, just under the wire! By only a couple minutes, no less.

Anyway, few notes about this update. The Phoenix is our first case. The Phoenix skips two of its turns in exchange for getting 7 turns in a row on it third, including a couple insta-death moves. The interesting thing about it is that if you survive all seven attacks, its final attack will instantly drop it to 1 HP no matter how much health it had starting out. You really want to end the fight before that happens, but it's a neat detail.

Also, for the Odelia sweets sidequest, if you want to make all the items in the game, do NOT use the Apple Tart you can buy from Escha. You can't make this item via alchemy, and you can only buy it from Escha once. For some reason, the Tart is a necessary component for an alchemy recipe Escha gives you just after the Sweets Festival.

Third note: this update has a lot of boat scenes. That's because a whole bunch of them triggered for me while I was grinding materials at the end of the game, and a lot of them only trigger in certain parts of the map (for example, the Wilbell / Odelia scene only triggers in the NE of the map on the eastern continent. It's north of Faav Village) Some of them are pretty neat, so I want to include as many as possible. However, it is entirely possible I haven't seen all of them.

Finally, I can now say with absolute confidence we're two updates away from the end of the main game and the start of the endings. There are only five of them in this game because this game doesn't have character endings for once. There's two unique ones for each alchemist, and one shared ending that's only viewable on a New Game+ playing as the opposite alchemist (so if you started with Stera, you can only see the True Ending playing as Lotte). One ending you achieve just for finishing the game, the second has a condition attached to it. For Stera, I have no flippin' clue what makes it show up, but for Lotte, you have to make the Flying Board.
