ARM Cortex-M3 is the one they have us learning. As far as kastein and I have discussed, it differs from x86 quite a bit and does this weird thing (it's probably not actually weird, just new to me) where it has an instruction shift of 16b on a 32b machine. You just point to the second half constantly.

You know those tiny, tiny, $30 Quadcopters you can find at the Wal-Mart?

They run an Arm Cortex M0. I've been trying to figure out how to patch into them so I can integrate sensors and better comms.

One morning you might wake up and find they're demolishing your house with a smallpox-ridden Type 99 because they decided whatever deals we signed with them were stupid.

I only hope the Chinese allow us to have casinos. Not all conquerors are so gracious. I tell my Chinese supervisor he better let me have at least a goddamn blackjack table. He laughs wildly because he thinks I am funny, and I stoically grin because he is actually cool and nice.

Not just any diesel... a gasoline engine retrofitted to run on diesel! that's more or less correct, I think? Yeah, they are actually completely different blocks, it was actually a rumor that they were based on gas motors. The issue was that they used their vast knowledge of gas motors in designing the head bolts and the fuel system....which didn't help being a diesel.

Started at 8 AM local. It's now 5:30 PM. Nothing has been restored, and there's no domain for my workstations to connect to (I'm the desktop workstation guy on hand.)
I've just got paid to pretty much surf the web all day. I did remote back to the office and work a few tickets, but that's about it. I'll be back tomorrow to see if I have anything to connect to, and then I have Thursday and Friday off for my birthday, after being off Labor Day. I like how this week is shaping up.

A real disaster recovery would be... interesting. A lot more pressure, and more hands-on-deck.

Some basic disaster preparedness could have been put in place, backup domain controllers, etc. You don't have to simulate a full on nothing works disaster to test disaster recovery.

My disaster recovery was pulling the network cable on the primary domain controller. Backup took over like a charm. Zero downtime. Then a week later, I did it to the backup.

Losing a domain controller counts as a disaster recovery situation where you work? Wow. I sometimes forget the difference in scale between various organizations. We have hundreds of domain controllers so losing one is barely even worth reporting. Our regional data centers are high availability between themselves so losing one isn't even that bad. We have to lose two data centers in the same region to start the DR process.

I've worked with companies who have hundreds of them, but my recent contracts have been small businesses.

Generally, any infrastructure I've managed has been setup in such a way that the only way it'd be a disaster is if multiple items fail at once.
