The Fijian fullback Metuisela Talebula is a fantastic player. He was the top try scorer in the Top 14 two years ago and was only three tries off being top scorer last season. He's got serious pace and can control the ball really well with his feet. If he can perform for Fiji as well as he does for Bordeaux he's the best player in their backline.

Fun fact: the Japanese guy they showed is the top try scorer in rugby union

A good game of rugby was far too much to ask of an Italian team without Parisse and a French team that knew they didn't have to try

One thing that bothers me is when referees let the attacking team fly into rucks off their feet and without binding if they're just on the tryline, the rules still apply no matter how close to scoring they are! I love a good rolling maul and they're actually easy enough for the defending team to halt against if they correctly organise their defensive lineout so I hope they remain a popular tactic.

Israel Folau is very good in the air. Catching the ball is one of those things I'd trust Folau to do on a bad day. Folau has proved himself to be able to catch the ball very well in three different sports. Among the rugby players whose role is catching the ball under pressure, I'd say Folau is one of the best. Why in the name of God would you decide to send high balls up against Folau?

O'Brien's citing started at two.Six and a half hours later and there's still no word of a decision. Current theory is the officials have decided on a ban and are engaged in a lengthy game of rock-paper-scissors to decide who has to tell him.

WMain00 posted:He played Leinster as exactly that though - an overly cautious conservative approach that basically did enough to win but that was it. Leinster specialised in closing down the game to crippllingly boring levels, but as soon as any team tried anything different or get in their face Leinster fell to bits. No, that's completely wrong. Leinster were playing better rugby than any other team in Europe when Joe was the coach. Their offloading game was second to none. The problem is he hasn't got Ireland playing like that. Northern Hemisphere rugby needs a complete overhaul.

Unimpressed posted:Clearly that hasn't helped. It goes a bit deeper than that though. The 6N teams often try to play expansive rugby, and sometimes they do it quite well like we saw in the last week of this year's tournament. However, they can't play it consistently because they don't have the same skill levels as the SH players. At underage levels there's too much of an emphasis on winning at all costs, rather than developing players. Kids are doing weights from a young age and end up playing for school and representative sides because they're massive but then they get found out at higher levels when they face off against other big players who also have a skill set. It comes down to coaching from a young age and as long as underage coaching in the Northern Hemisphere revolves around getting kids big enough to enter professional setups from as young an age as possible rather than perfecting basic skills such as handling the SH teams will always reign supreme. (Note to the RFU and the FFR; The solution to this problem does not involve ceding more power to private clubs.)

Plucky Brit posted:The gently caress is with Irish player citations anyway? It's like they have a tenth of a normal penalty. This time the citing commission made a bit of a mess of the whole thing. They cleared Healy of the offence he was cited for (which I cannot understand for the life of me) and then found him guilty of a different offence that he hadn't been charged with. He'll miss the Toulon match but he may end up getting off on some technicality.

Stuart McCloskey is a beast, I can't wait to see him playing for Ireland. Himself and Henshaw would be a fairly huge centre pairing

Vaders Jester posted:Looks like a solid Irish side, McCloskey has been great this year and the back row looks pretty scary. As long as the wingers don't poo poo the bed or all die the week before the 6N, should be pretty good. Is Bowe injured at the moment or just not on form? Bowe got injured in the Argentina match and may not be back until summer. McCloskey simply has to start, he's been the best centre in Ireland all year. I'll despair if Henshaw and Payne start again having both just come back from injuries.

I thought the whole point of that Nucifora guy's job was to stop this ridiculous situation where Munster have no centres while there are too many centres to count a few hours up the road. The only interprovincial move that's been confirmed so far is Rodney Ah You moving from Connacht to Ulster, which is fairly underwhelming when you think about how many talented players are struggling to get gametime in Leinster and Ulster.
