The HOTAS talk made me finally get off my rear end and make a non-lovely not drawn on graph paper button layout thing. Figured I'd share it. I use the CH Products Fighterstick and Pro Throttle. I love them to death and they made Elite a totally new game to learn all over again, but they can be pricey (~$230 for both on Amazon right now). I used an Xbox controller prior to this setup. Lots of people talk about Thrustmaster and Saitek setups, but this is another good one. Natsuumi fucked around with this message at 19:13 on Jan 31, 2016 |

froody guy posted:No wait, seriously? I'm talking of a pretty heavy change, day and night kind of change. I remember that when I jumped in a new system I could just keep throttle to zero and stay quite a lot semi-idle at a distance, say a couple of minutes before I had red alerts from the overheating alarm thing. In that time I used to scan the main star, scan system, check in system view if there were interesting planets, even listen to them sounds.... Now I can barely finish the scan of the main star (how long does it take, 10 sec?) and I'm already burning, everything is blinking red and if I don't pull up I'm dead within seconds. The impression is that they changed the gravitational pull mechanics or they changed the distance from the main star you land once you exit hyperdrive. In both ways this is pretty bad for an explorer, once again Nope they didn't change anything. Something wrong with you/your ship. Been out exploring for the last month and it's all the same as it always was. I can idle at the star at jump in forever, or at least as long as it takes 30 km/s to fly into it. Did you plot your jumps then take on any cargo? That's my best guess because cargo (or any added weight) reduces your jump range. If a previously plotted route is now beyond jump range it really won't tell you until you try to jump it. You just need to replot your jump route to your destination.

They really did fly that far out in an Adder (using a hack that made 65k Ly jumps possible), but it's not normally possible. There are stars that far away but there comes a point that no ship currently can make the jump distances required. I think they did this just to see what was there and take pictures. Nothing was scanned to spoil any firsts if it ever becomes possible to jump out there.

Fried Watermelon posted:As far as exploration goes, how much unexplored territory is there? I know the galaxy is huge but what has already been explored as far as percentages? Probably less than one-tenth of one percent is explored. A lot of stuff around the bubble of settled space is explored, but that's because it is close. Go out a thousand Ly and it's easy to find the unexplored. There's a billion systems in the game. Even if a system was being explored every second nonstop it would take something like 32 years to explore them all, by my napkin math. Realistically, not that many explore, people stop to scan and take pretty pictures, it would take thousands of years to explore it all. There's plenty of space to explore and put your name on if you get off the beaten path and the space tourist destinations.

Buy anytime, I'd just keep enough cash on hand to cover your rebuy cost for if you get blown up. Modules sell back at 100% cost so buy whenever you want. If you didn't like what you bought you can get all your money back on it. Ships sell back for less, 90% of their cost, modules attached to your ship sell at 90% as well, so sell them all/downgrade as much if you sell your ship.
