Iirc the only social reforms that are actually useful are better healthcare and education, the other ones just reduce productivity. The only gameplay reason to enact them is to bleed off militancy.

All social reforms increase immigration attraction, which is really important if you're in the New World.

Just go the HOI4 route and have everything except movement moved up to the state level. There are just way too many provinces in the game now.

Yeah hexes were never the problem, it was that the AI had (and still has) no idea how to handle 1 Unit Per Tile.

Gameplay-wise it's nothing special. Kinda tedious. Civ 2 with a couple wacky new mechanics on top. All the appeal is in the writing. The characters that still pretty strongly represent important elements of the world and all have a pretty strong flavor to them. There's a tone of little quotes and anecdotes and passages that represent some pretty neat sci-fi and worldly commentary. There's the dated CGI videos that still work pretty well. Beyond Earth pretends that it has something to say, but really doesn't, Alpha Centauri actually says a decent amount.

We must dissent.

"As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master."

This one is pretty funny how wrong it is in retrospect. You don't have to deny people access to information when you can just overwhelm them with it.

This is the poo poo I'm talking about. It's a reference to a stupid copypasta from like 2008. Just because you discovered internet socialism in 2016 and knew what that mosque shooter put on his gun doesn't mean everyone did. The guy PM'd me saying he wouldn't post there again because he had no idea what he did wrong and wasn't going to walk on eggshells.

It's reddit-teir meme cringe, not hate and malice.

A couple people told them to gently caress off, and then explained what the problem was. If that's too much for someone to handle then they probably shouldn't be posting here anyway.

I repeat again and again: Civilization caused huge harm to people understanding of history and life and whatever. Almost every concept in it is an understandable simplification of reality and no one consciously thinks about it as a historical simulator, but interactive media are powerful that way. They make you feel for granted a lot of things like there's a line between a barbarian and civilization, there's a clear scientific progress measurement, bigger cities and empires are good as long as they can keep it up, everyone can look like modern America if they play their cards right and so on and so on.

Paradox is not perfect of course but it has more nuance and somewhat less glorifying. Not like it tells you "good job on colonizing this are and destroying whole cultures" but at least it doesn't pretend that history is a joyful march of liberty and progress.

:hmmyes:

It also gives people the idea that countries and cultures were discrete units that never intermixed or changed throughout all of history. Like Germans were always Germans, Zulu were always Zulu, etc. Coincidentally this false idea has a not of overlap with the white supremacist idea of ethnostates.

Like Red Bones said, those ideas were all the default assumptions for most people before Civ too, even if there were some historians arguing otherwise. Civ didn't create people's popular misconceptions about history, it reflected them.

True, but it also definitely reinforces those ideas to modern audiences.
